“Zach is a top-notch young man. He loves his familyZach (especially Hawkinshis little brother) and has done well in his given role as the “man of the house.” He’s admired by his friends for his loyalty and gentle spirit. The difference between the Zach that arrived here seven years ago and now is nothing short of a miracle. I look forward to watching him excel in the next season of his life.” - Troy Robertson, Arms of Hope Chief Operations Officer Zach has been a resident of Arms of Hope- Medina Campus for the past seven years. Zach’s family is in our Together Program, where they have thrived under our care. They came after fleeing a life of homelessness and abuse. Zach will be attending Schreiner University in the fall, majoring in History. “Arms of Hope saved me and my family from homelessness. I am following in my mother’s footsteps and attending college majoring in History. While at Arms of Hope I have become a follower of Christ and will continue to walk the path that God lays in front of me.” - Zach Hawkins

“September 26, 2003, is the day God graced our AOH staff with the blessing of Andrew Landry. I have watchedAndrew this boy mature Landry into a young man, driven to find success in all aspects of his life. No matter what curve ball life has thrown Andrew’s way, he has always reached down deep within himself and found the ambition and determination to make the best of the situation, teaching others, especially me, that life really is what you make of it. As Andrew prepares to start a new chapter in his life, I reflect back to the an- gry child who entered my life so many years ago and I beam with pride that he is a true survivor, a man of compassion, determination, ambition and leadership. We thank God for the blessing Andrew gave us all the day he came to AOH.” - Karon Bray, Arms of Hope Director of Social Programs Andrew has been a resident of Arms of Hope for almost nine years and has truly grown up in our care. He came from a background of extreme neglect and abuse, but un- der counseling provided by AOH and the love and support from our staff, has healed and successfully moved forward in his faith journey. He excelled in sports and academics in high school and will attend Texas A&M University majoring in Petroleum Engineering. “Without Arms of Hope, I wouldn’t be as responsible and level-headed as I am now. I would have been angry, I would’ve never stepped foot in a church building and who knows where I would’ve ended up, probably homeless on the streets. Thank you, Arms of Hope, for giving me not just a place to live, but a true family.” - Andrew Landry 5 Reaching Generations “Ryan has reallyRyan grown in hisMason faith journey over the last year. He’s now making decisions that reflect that growth. His grades and maturity have soared over the past year and he’s taking a proactive role in the leadership of his family and peers. I have no doubt that he’ll succeed at the higher education level. He’s an outstanding young man and someone who I highly respect and admire.” - Thomas Wickham, Arms of Hope College and Career Director Ryan has been a resident at Arms of Hope-Medina Campus for the past seven years. His mother and two younger siblings are in our Together Program. Ryan will be attending Schreiner University majoring in Theology and Psy- chology to pursue a career of ministering to others. “Arms of Hope-Medina Campus has played a big part in my life and has made me into the responsible, outgoing young man that I am today. I thank all who work at and support AOH for giving me the chance to succeed. The most important thing is that AOH has helped me become a man of God!” - Ryan Mason

“Kamille has been a resident of Arms of Hope for over five years and I have had the pleasureKamille of getting to watch herMiller turn into a young woman. Kamille has a drive to succeed that can be matched by few people. When she sets her mind to something, she makes sure that she will do whatever it takes to make it happen. She is involved in helping at church, sports and community activities and goes above and beyond. I look forward to watching Kamille continue to grow over the next few years and I will be a part of her life and watch her suc- ceed well after that.” - Zac Burtchell, Arms of Hope Residential Caseworker Kamille came to AOH as a sassy, temperamental little girl. She strug- gled with authority and her way was the only way. What a difference we see today! She has learned to control her temper, express her opinions in appropriate ways and is known around campus as a leader and mentor to the younger girls. She will attend Texas State University, where she’ll pursue her dream of working with children in the medical field. “Arms of Hope-Medina Campus has become my home over the many years and is a place where I know I’ll always be received with unconditional love and positive reinforcement.” - Kamille Miller

“The day Samuel arrived at Arms of Hope, he stepped into a role of lead- ership. He set aS goalamuel for himself andWilliamson pressed on toward it. I saw him go from a mistreated, distrusting, angry young man to a sensitive, caring and compassionate young adult. He has earned the respect of all those who come in contact with him. God has given him the ability to be a hero for some and an encourager for others. I thank God for Samuel every time I wrap my arms around him. He has learned to lean into the pain of his past and take on the call of God for his future.” - Sue Lacy, House Mom Samuel has been a resident at Arms of Hope - Medina Campus for three years. He came to us from inner-city San Antonio, where he was on a path of self destruction. He will openly confess that if he hadn’t come to AOH he would ei- ther be in jail or dead. Samuel will be attending Schreiner University where he’ll play basketball and pursue his dream of becoming a youth minister. “If I try, I will fly - if I don’t, I won’t, thanks to the many people I have met here at Arms of Hope. If it weren’t for them, I would have never realized what “trying to fly” truly means. My walk with God started with one leap of faith. Because of Arms of Hope, I have come to understand that God takes all the pieces of your broken life and turns them into a work of dignity and purpose. Thank you so much for preparing me to face all the storms life will send me. Because of God and Arms of Hope, I will fly!” - Samuel Williamson ArmsofHope.org 6 Chapel of Hope Dedication Ceremony

A TrueBy Alex Flores, Second Medina Campus Chance Graduate and Current College & Career Resident

My name is Alex Flores. I’m in the College and Career Program at Arms of Hope, where I’ve just fin- ished my second semester at Alamo Community College. Growing up as a kid, I wasn’t in the best living situation. My mom was working two jobs to support us because I didn’t have a father there to help her. In and out of houses and living on nothing was how it was until my mom found a steady job. My mom later got married and I gained a brother and several sisters. I was always hanging out with the older crowd, watching them and learning. At 9 years old, I was arrested for my first time for possession of marijuana. At 12 years old, I began selling weed. At 13, I started selling cocaine. I was going to school and hustling at the same time. Actually, all I was doing at school was skipping class and finding people to sell drugs to. One of my best friends was shot and killed right in front of me and I was arrested again for cocaine possession at 14 years old. My probation officer told me that I had a high risk of going to prison and teachers told me that I would never amount to anything. I now have several family members in prison. Thank God that my probation officer guided me to AOH! I arrived at the Medina Campus almost four years ago. At first, the transition was really hard. I had to get used to everything, including actually attending school and following rules. I had great house parents who helped me and I got in- volved in football, basketball and baseball. I even started participating in theater at school and our One Act Play won state. In 2011, everyone at Arms of Hope threw me a special surprise party. It wasn’t for my birthday or for graduation - it was because I was off probation for the first time since I was 9 years old. Most importantly, I became a follower of Jesus Christ. I graduated from high school and did something that I never dreamed was possible and that no member of my family has ever done - I was accepted to and enrolled in college. With the help and spiritual guidance of all of the people at Arms of Hope, I know that now my future looks bright!

13 Reaching Generations A Family’s PersonalBy Julia Truesdell, Tog Testimonyether Program Resident

My name is Julia Truesdell and I live with my two children at Arms of Hope-Medina Campus. Get- ting into the Together Program has truly been a bless- ing, but a devastating journey got us here. I guess it all stems from my childhood. Inconsistent and abusive parenting molded me to believe that certain things were okay and that people were supposed to treat you like nothing and make you feel worthless. I became pregnant and trapped at 18. I was married, but not because I loved him. There was always physical, mental, verbal and emotional abuse in our marriage. After one horrible episode, he spent a month in jail and still didn’t change his ways. So I called my mother, and my kids and I moved to Dallas into her one- bedroom apartment. Chaotic doesn’t begin to describe living with her. She was gone all day and at the bar almost every night, stumbling in at 3 a.m. I worked a couple of jobs, but as hard as I tried, I couldn’t provide for my babies and had to do something that broke my heart…call their father. He could support them and had never shown vi- olence towards them. I kissed them and told them how much I loved them, and watched them drive away in a blur. That was the worst pain I’d ever felt in my life. I would rather take my husband kicking me in the back with his steel-toed boots again or a punch in the face than ever have to feel that pain again. The plan was to get a job, get settled and get my babies back. I then found out things that a mother only can have nightmares about... my ex-husband had been abusing our daughter, Ariel. I found my daughter on the couch completely incoherent. She could barely open her eyes or move her head and I could still see his hand prints from where he had slapped her little face. He was arrested and we were brought to the emergency room by ambulance. The violence she endured was un- imaginable. I had to do more for her and my son. I found out about Arms of Hope-Medina Cam- pus and I immediately applied. Because the program was completely full, it took us 6 months to get in. I cried when I got the phone call saying we had been accepted. May 9th, 2011, was a day of change for all of us. We’ve been here a year and I’m getting my kids the help they need through the programs offered at Arms of Hope. After Ariel cried out to her therapist things really started taking off. Ariel is now being treated for her Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and I see a little more of my little girl coming back every day. As you can see, my little family has, pardon me, been through hell. Things are better now thanks to Arms of Hope - Medina Campus and they can only continue to improve from where I’m sitting. I’m preparing to attend college to secure our bright future.

21 Reaching Generations College Groups Visit Arms of Hope Campuses

From January 9th-13th, 17 Aggies For Christ blessed the Arms of Hope-Medina Campus with their service and ministry to our residents. These outstanding young men and women helped with the animals our children were showing at the Bandera Stock Show, finished building a fence around our swimming pool, reorganized the warehouse and served the entire campus a fantastic dinner. They also led devotionals, had nightly activities and performed their amazing “Skits.” We give special thanks to Chase Daniels for leading this year’s group. The visit from AFC is something our campus looks forward to every year and we can’t wait for next year!

Seven amazing students from ACU spent their Spring Break in March serving on the Arms of Hope-Boles Cam- pus. The group spent countless hours with residents, cleaned various buildings, led a devotional and helped prepare a campus yard sale. Group leader Evan Hernandez said, “It worked wonders on the hearts of our group!” The Aggies For Christ blessed the Arms of Hope-Boles Campus from January 8th-13th. Led by Ethan Royster, 26 Aggies came and completed 13 planned tasks and cheerfully worked on 7 other tasks that came up during the week. They shared meals in the cottages and spent invaluable time forming relationships with the residents. The Aggies also served dinner, performed skits and led a church service for the entire campus.

He was very proud of his accomplishment and this was the beginning of his desire to collect, restore and tinker with radios.

“During my radio collecting years, I was an avid collector, accumulating 400 plus radios and 75 plus early speakers,” remembers Mr. Fox. He and his wife, Judy, also collected petroleum memorabilia, which was sold and the proceeds were used to build the 7,400 square foot Fox Family Liv- ing Center on the Arms of Hope - Medina Campus in 2009. “Now that I’m retired and have other interests, it was time to let the radios go, too. Judy and I are prayerful that the proceeds from the collection will help provide opportunities for a better life for others,” stated Mr. Fox.

On February 24th and 25th, an auction to sell Jim and Judy Fox’s radio collection was held on the Boles Campus where over $38,000 was raised to help Arms of Hope provide as- sistance to homeless, abused and neglected children.

“It was a fun hobby and resulted in a nice collection. As we get older, our interests change and one day we realized that we were not going to get everything done and it was time to let go of some of our “stuff.” The radio collection is some of this “stuff” and we wanted the proceeds to be used for the good of others,” exclaimed Judy Fox.
