Editorial have two new service booklets on my desk. The first is a small, compact handbook of some 120 pages entitled Inizio del Ministerio Petrino del Vescovo di Roma, 19 IMarzo 2013, the feast day of St Joseph. The right-hand pages contain the liturgical text, including chant, in Latin and Italian as these were used in the public rite, Greek for the Gospel and, in appropriate script, Russian, French, Arabic, Swahili, Chinese and Italian for the prayers of the faithful. On the left hand page, everything was translated into Italian and English. The rubrics are – pink. It was, fundamentally, a Mass over which the Bishop of Rome presided in the presence of a couple of hundred thousand of his people, on an exquisitely sunny day in the open air in front of St Peter’s Basilica. Anything else – the Imposition of the Pallium and the Bestowal of the Fisherman’s Ring – was enacted prior to Santa Messa. Apart from the numbers and the setting, it felt (to this non-Roman guest) like a bishop celebrating with his people. The other is larger (quarto) and shorter (43 pages), entitled The Inauguration of the Ministry of the One Hundred and Fifth Archbishop of Canterbury, 21 March 2013 At Three O’Clock (just before tea), and lists the two feasts of the day, of Benedict and Thomas Cranmer. The service took place inside the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ, Canterbury. It was a Service of the Word, much of it concerned with the legalities of the Established Church of England. There are about 13 pages listing the persons who form the divers Processions. As a participant, I must say the day was dominated by standing about in the crypt robing and being put in order; the result was, however, a miraculous precision in everyone being in the right place and the right time, looking splendid (or in my case, sober). The music represented a wide variety of eras and cultures, but I freely confess to a touch to ecstasy in joining with choir and organ and two thousand Anglicans in singing Charles Wesley’s And Can It Be (to Sagina). I was, after all, representing (however ironically for an Australian) the World Methodist Council. An Editorial is no place for analysis, but I was reminded at both liturgies of the old story of a Pope preaching in that Basilica on the subject of humility – only the basilica shouted him down. Pope Francis may well challenge that, but so also will Archbishop Justin Welby. Both were palpably present as people of prayer in rather grand contexts. Neither made any gesture based on the behaviour of Presidents or film stars. This issue of AJL contains the keynote addresses of the Conference, plus Dr Clare V. Johnson’s public lecture which describes the liturgical influence of the late Catholic Archbishop of Hobart, Dr Guilford Young, and measures contemporary issues against his pleas. Readers will have been looking forward to reading Part 2 of Sr Dr Margaret Smith’s first essay in our last issue on ‘Sacrosanctum Concilium: The Australian Way’, but sickness has prevented her completing this – but it is promised for our October issue. We wish her a quick recovery. We also congratulate a recent Academy member, Philip Nicholls, on his appointment as Director of Music at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Melbourne. He succeeds Dr June Nixon AM who held that position for forty years. Philip was previously Director of Music at Christ Church, South Yarra, a parish church with a choir school well known for its excellence. In addition he served on the music staff of Trinity College, University of Melbourne, and is General Editor of the Australian Hymn Book Company. And behind all that is a lifetime of music-making as choirboy, choral scholar, conductor – and of practice and study both in Australia and overseas. Johnson is Senior Lecturer in Liturgical Studies and Sacramental Theology at Australian Catholic University (Strathfield, NSW). Her research is published in Studia Liturgica, Worship, Liturgy, Australian JournalA ofUSTRALIAN Liturgy, Pastoral Liturgy AC, ADEMY OF LITURGY and other journals. She is editor of Ars Liturgiae: Worship, Aesthetics and Praxis (Chicago: LTP, 2003) and contributing co-editor of Vatican II: Reception and Implementation in the Australian Church (Mulgrave: Garrett, 2012). She serves as assistant editor of Studia Liturgica and is a member of the National Liturgical Council advising the Australian Bishops’ Commission on the Liturgy. The article is her public address during the Hobart Conference of the Academy. Introduction n 1939 on the eve of the outbreak of World War II, a bright 24-year-old newly- ordained Australian priest left Rome to travel back to his native Queensland after the completion of his doctoral studies. On his journey home, he stopped off in Ithe USA to visit an isolated Benedictine monastery where he reacquainted himself with a monk who changed the course of his life. The young priest was none other than Guilford Young and the monk was the eminent Benedictine liturgist and leading light of the American Liturgical Movement, Fr. Godfrey Diekmann,1 whom Young had met during his time in Rome. Young’s brief visit to St. John’s Abbey at Collegeville, Minnesota, reignited his interest in the work of the Liturgical Movement which eventually led to friendships with other eminent liturgists of the day such as Fred McManus, Clifford Howell, Percy Jones and others ‘of a small band who...were known as the “liturbugs”’,2 and who worked assiduously to promote the Liturgical Movement in their respective English-speaking contexts. "We understand the significance of religious confession - in particular, the inviolability of the confessional seal to people of some faiths, particularly the Catholic faith", said the report. "However, we heard evidence of a number of instances where disclosures of child sexual abuse were made in religious confession, by both victims and perpetrators. ”We are satisfied that confession is a forum where Catholic children have disclosed their sexual abuse and where clergy have disclosed their abusive behavior in order to deal with their own guilt." But Archbishop Hart, President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, called for the confessional seal to remain protected by law. "Confession in the Catholic Church is a spiritual encounter with God through the priest," he said in a statement.

    AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE 3 April 2013 Members of Truth Justice and Healing Council announced Archbishop Denis Hart, President of The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference, and Sr Annette Cunliffe RSC, Chair of Catholic Religious Australia, have today announced the members of the Truth Justice and Healing Council (TJHC). The TJHC will oversee the Catholic Church's engagement with the Royal Commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse. Francis Sullivan, CEO of the Council, welcomed the announcement saying the 13 member Council is made up of men and women with professional and other expertise, especially across child sexual abuse, paedophilia, trauma, mental illness, suicide and public policy. “The Church and members of the TJHC are determined that the truth be told and that the Church assists victims and those damaged by abuse as children receive justice and to embark on a sustainable process of healing. ” Francis Sullivan said. “Councillors have been chosen for their obvious expertise and their willingness to give frank and independent advice.” “This Council will guide the Church as it goes through the Royal Commission, and will approach the task with openness and compassion.” “ We accept that the Royal Commission may well reveal embarrassing and shameful episodes from our past, but it is necessary in order for the truth to heal and for the community to see that our engagement is genuine and sincere.” “ Our task also involves advising the Church on the best practice changes to protect children and prevent sexual abuse.” “ This is a crucial task as the Church demonstrates through its actions that the welfare and safety of children are the highest priority.” The Truth Justice and Healing Council will hold its first meeting in Sydney in mid April.

For those on the outside, the Church building bears witness to the fact that the people who meet there take God seriously.

    CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF MELBOURNE MEDIA RELEASE –TUESDAY 8 APRIL 2008 VALE ARCHBISHOP FRANK LITTLE DD KBE The former Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne Thomas Francis Little died peacefully in his sleep last night at his home in Camberwell at the age of 82 years. He was appointed the sixth Archbishop of Melbourne by Pope Paul VI, succeeding Cardinal Knox on the 1 July 1974. He resigned from the position in 1996 for health reasons. He is predeceased by his parents Gerald and Kathleen (nee McCormack) and his brother Jack and is survived by his brother Gerald. He was a passionate supporter of the Essendon Football Club. Melbourne’s Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart said today that the death of Archbishop Little will be felt deeply by many people in Melbourne. “Archbishop Little will be fondly remembered as a dedicated caring leader of the Church for 22 years,” Archbishop Hart said today. “His sincere pastoral style and concern for his people was admired by all who met him.” Archbishop Little was born in Werribee on 30 November 1925. He entered Corpus Christi College, then at Werribee, in 1943 to begin studies for the priesthood. In 1947, he continued his studies at Propaganda Fide College, Rome, and was ordained to the priesthood in the chapel of the College on 3 October 1950, by Cardinal Fumasoni Biondi. For the next three years he pursued his doctoral studies through the Urban University in Rome and was awarded his doctorate in 1953. On his return to Melbourne in 1953 he was appointed as assistant priest to Carlton, then assistant at St Patrick's Cathedral in 1955.

Yet at a national level it is hardly a cohesive body with a sense of unity and common purpose. Historically, Australian Anglicanism developed along regional lines, with the result that diocesan separateness rather than national unity became enshrined as a foundational principle of Anglicanism in Australia. This study questions this fundamental premise of the Anglican tradition in Australia. It argues (1) that it is not a true reflection of the Anglican ethos, both in its English origins and worldwide, and (2) that it prevents Anglicanism in Australia from embracing its national vocation. An alternative tradition has been present, in fact, within Australian Anglicanism from the beginning, although it has not been considered to be part of the mainstream. Bishop Broughton, the first Anglican bishop in Australia, was deeply sensitive to the colonial context in which the Anglican tradition was being planted, and he adapted it accordingly.

Tel: B.H 5144 4100 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B 7 - 8 July 2018 Pope Francis has appointed a new Archbishop of Melbourne Pope Francis has appointed Most Reverend Bishop Peter Andrew Comensoli of the Diocese of Broken Bay as the ninth Archbishop of Melbourne. Archbishop-elect Comensoli was born in 1964, and grew up in the Illawarra region of New South Wales and was educated by the Good Samaritan Sisters and Marist Fathers. He studied commerce at the University of Wollongong and worked for a time in the banking sector. He entered the seminary in 1986 and was ordained in 1992. Following his ordination, Archbishop-elect Comensoli undertook postgraduate studies in moral theology in Rome and at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. After serving in a number of parishes in the Diocese of Wollongong, he was Diocesan Chancellor for six years prior to his appointment as Auxiliary Bishop to the Archdiocese of Sydney in 2011 and as Apostolic Administrator to the Archdiocese of Sydney in 2014.

    KL Pell, Hart were leaders in addressing child sex abuse Gerard Henderson Published: June 4, 2013 - 12:14PM Cardinal George Pell in Sydney and Archbishop Denis Hart in Melbourne have become public targets for criticism concerning sexual abuse by priests and brothers within the Catholic Church in Australia. The evidence suggests that paedophiles have been active in religious and secular institutions and elsewhere over the years, particularly between the 1950s and the 1980s. The situation within the Catholic Church has been particularly serious. During their recent appearances before the Victorian parliamentary inq uiry into child abuse, Pell and Hart were subjected to hectoring by some parliamentarians, along with occasional demonstrations and generally hostile media coverage, particularly on the ABC and in The Age . Yet it appears they were among the first Catholic leaders in the world to address the issue in a serious way. A lot of the commentary on this issue has been replete with an ignorance as to how the Catholic Church operates by those who should know better. For example, on ABC1's News Breakfast last week Way ne Chamley of Broken Rites said the Church "runs on anarchy". It doesn't. Last July, the Four Corners program ''Unholy Silence'', by Geoff Thompson and Mary Ann Jolley, failed to make the point that Pell is not responsible for archdioceses or dioceses othe r than his own. Each bishop reports direct to the Pope in what is an authoritarian structure. More seriously, Four Corners refused to run Pell's comment to this effect, either in the program itself or in the extended interview which is on the Four Corners website.
