“Preserving Christianity in the Holy Land”

The Hon Kevin Andrews MP KHS

“Since being elected to office, Pope Francis has expressed concern about the situation of Christians in the Middle East, whom he said, “suffer in a particularly severe way the consequences of tensions and conflicts in many parts of the Middle East.” In 2013 he said the leaders of the church “will not resign ourselves to imagining a Middle East without Christians.”

In this inaugural Holy Sepulchre Oration, Kevin Andrews examines the place of Christians in the Holy Lands, and the ongoing role of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in preserving their presence.

Kevin Andrews is a founding member of the Victorian Lieutenancy of the Order and a Newman Old Collegian. He is Federal Member for Menzies.

Newman College has been chosen as the venue to facilitate attendance of students. However, the Oration is open to all, especially Catholics in the Archdiocese who wish to learn about how support can be given to our sisters and brothers in the Holy Land.

Knights and Dames are requested to make every effort to attend the Oration, and to bring Catholic friends with an interest in the Holy Land. The seminarians who organised the event have written expressing their appreciation of the participation by members of our Order. An Invitation to Membership Knights and Dames are encouraged to approach fellow Catholics with information about our Order and its mission. Our commitment is to give support, through the Latin Patriarchate, to our Christian sisters and brothers in the Holy Land. Our prayers and fellowship are also a source of personal enrichment as we seek to meet our own Christian ideals.

Although it is now too late for candidates to be invested during the coming visit of the Grand master it is not too early to be preparing for investiture in 2019. Growth of our Lieutenancy, and hence increasing support for the work of the Latin Patriarchate and the Christian presence in the Holy Land, will only come about through the efforts of our Knights and Dames to encourage other Catholics to join us in our endeavours.

Your Lieutenant is available to talk with and give additional information on our Order and its mission. We will also be holding an Information Night in February 2019. 2019 Pilgrimage to the Holy Land Visiting the land of Jesus is a discovery with various layers. One interaction with its terrain most visitors never forget is the joy of finding the images of the Bible reflected in the real places and sites that retell the story from a different perspective. For Knights and Dames of our Order it is also an opportunity to meet with our Christian brothers and sisters and gather a deeper understanding of their situation.

Knights and Dames, with family and friends, are invited to join Ecclesiastic Knight Fr Simon Grainger KCHS in the Holy Land from Thursday 2 May 2019 through Wednesday 14 May 2019. For those concerned with safety, Laila Tours have advised that from time to time there are incidents which are widely publicised in the world media. However, in general these incidents are localised and do not affect pilgrims. Where there is a known disturbance the tour company will reconfigure the itinerary to avoid the disturbance and possibly return when the disturbance has passed. The company has the safety of pilgrims and their staff as the highest priority.

Caritas Jerusalem has been managing four mobile• medical teams and emergency trauma clinics dispersed throughout the Gaza Strip, where they provide medical services and health care to patients who suffer from cancer, gunshot wounds and intestinal parasite infestation.

While visiting one the emergency trauma clinics near the Israeli fence, Sr. Bridget Tighe, General Director of Caritas Jerusalem, said in a report published by Caritas: “All the injured I met were young men with gunshot wounds to their legs. They will recover but thousands with serious injuries, including lower limb amputations, will be disabled for life.”

Water crisis in Gaza Due to poor sewage treatment and contaminated water distribution centres, people in Gaza and especially children have fallen victim to intestinal parasite infections and diseases, which eventually could lead to malnutrition. According to the UN, along the shoreline of Gaza “some 110 million litres EOHSJ Australia-Victoria June 2018 Newsletter pg. 5 of raw or poorly treated sewage is flowing into the Mediterranean Sea every day”. In the north of the Gaza Strip and Gaza City where intestinal infestation is very high, two of the four Caritas mobile medical teams administer deworming treatment and provide fortified biscuits to about 6000 refugee children, whose ages range from three to six years old. “Some parents give the children fewer biscuits than recommended, spread them out over a longer period, and share them with their other children, all of whom are hungry,” said Ameen Sabbagh, administrator of Caritas Jerusalem in Gaza. “They cannot get out of Gaza for treatment”

Cancer patients are also unable to leave the Gaza Strip to receive appropriate medical treatment. “We need funds to buy emergency cancer drugs and analgesics for children and adults who ask for our help, as government stocks are totally depleted,” said Sr. Bridget. “We hope that international organizations will replenish essential supplies within a few months. Most of all we need prayers for those suffering that they will get food and medicine, and for peace and justice for all.” Welfare You are asked to keep Knights Michael Howard, David Perrin and Brian Castanelli, and Michael’s wife Jeanette in your prayers. 2018 PROGRAM
