(Her name was Fössl, but she thought it best to change it to Foss, because, she said, Americans would pronounce the Germanic form as "fossil.") In 1942, her director, Rev. Ludger Born, S.J., advised her to flee Austria because the Gestapo had discovered that she was engaged in subversive activities -- namely, bringing food to Jewish children at the Relief Center.
