Bartók (1881-1945) EAST-CENTRAL EUROPEAN & BALKAN CONCERTOS From the 19th Century to the Present A Discography of CDs and LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Béla Bartók (1881-1945) Born in Nagyszentmiklós, Banat, Austria-Hungary (now Sânnicolau Mare, Romania). A prodigy on the piano, he received his first lessons from his mother and gave his first public recital at age eleven, and also began to compose. László Erkel accepted him as a pupil and he also studied piano under István Thomán, a former student of Franz Liszt, and composition under János Koessler at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest. He began a lifelong friendship with fellow-composer Zoltán Kodály and the two of them explored the countryside in search of authentic Magyar folk music. He began his musical career as a piano teacher at the Royal Academy and he went on to become one of his country's greatest composers. His anti-Fascism prompted his exile to the United States, where he continued to compose and teach until his death. His large output covered most genres from opera and ballet to works for solo instruments and voices. His sole attempt at a Symphony was left incomplete with only the Scherzo orchestrated. In 1961, the Belgian music scholar Denijs Dille (1904-2005) orchestrated the remaining movements. SOUND RECORDING REVIEWS Chicago Symphony Orchestra: The First Hundred Years CS090/12 (12 CDs: monaural, stereo; ADD)1 Available only from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 220 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, for $175 plus $5 shipping and handling. The Centennial Collection-Chicago Symphony Orchestra RCA-Victor Gold Seal, GD 600206 (3 CDs; monaural, stereo, ADD and DDD). (total time 3:36:3l2). A "musical trivia" question: "Which American symphony orchestra was the first to record under its own name and conductor?" You will find the answer at the beginning of the 12-CD collection, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra: The First 100 Years, issued by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO). The date was May 1, 1916, and the conductor was Frederick Stock. 3 This is part of the orchestra's celebration of the hundredth anniversary of its founding by Theodore Thomas in 1891. Thomas is represented here, not as a conductor (he died in 1904) but as the arranger of Wagner's Triiume. But all of the other conductors and music directors are represented, as well as many guests. With one exception, the 3-CD set, The Centennial Collection: Chicago Symphony Orchestra, from RCA-Victor is drawn from the recordings that the Chicago Symphony made for that company. All were released previously, in various formats-mono and stereo, 78 rpm, 45 rpm, LPs, tapes, and CDs-as the technologies evolved. Although the present digital processing varies according to source, the sound is generally clear; the Reiner material is comparable to RCA-Victor's on-going reissues on CD of the legendary recordings produced by Richard Mohr.

BOSTON SYMPHONY v^Xvv^JTa Jlj l3 X JlVjl FOUNDED IN 1881 BY HENRY LEE HIGGINSON THURSDAY A SERIES EIGHTY-EIGHTH SEASON 1968-1969 Exquisite Sound From the palaces of ancient Egypt to the concert halls of our modern cities, the wondrous music of the harp has compelled attention from all peoples and all countries. Through this passage of time many changes have been made in the original design. The early instruments shown in drawings on the tomb of Rameses II (1292-1225 B.C.) were richly decorated but lacked the fore-pillar. Later the "Kinner" developed by the Hebrews took the form as we know it today. The pedal harp was invented about 1720 by a Bavarian named Hochbrucker and through this ingenious device it be- came possible to play in eight major and five minor scales complete. Today the harp is an important and familiar instrument providing the "Exquisite Sound" and special effects so important to modern orchestration and arrange- ment. • MUSIC DIRECTORS Fritz Reiner
MUSIC DIRECTORS Fritz Reiner Born December 19, 1888, Budapest, Hungary. Died November 15, 1963, New York City. MUSIC DIRECTOR (1953-1962) MUSICAL ADVISOR (1962-1963) Fritz Reiner studied at the music academy in Budapest. His conducting debut was sudden-when the staff conductor at the Budapest Opera was taken ill, Reiner (then its young rehearsal coach) was thrust onto podium to direct that evening’s performance of Bizet’s Carmen. His full command of the situation subsequently led to his appointment as first conductor at the Laibach (now Ljubljana) National Opera. From 1911 to 1914, Reiner was conductor of the People’s Opera in Budapest and went on to head the renowned Dresden Opera. He achieved great success conducting the music of Richard Strauss and premiered many of the composer’s works at Dresden. Reiner came to the United States in 1922 and became conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony, where he remained until 1931; during this time he also was a frequent guest orchestral and operatic conductor in San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Chicago. In the 1934-35 season, Reiner organized the Philadelphia Opera Association and became its chief conductor. In 1938 he accepted the post of music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony, where he would remain for ten seasons until becoming principal conductor of the Metropolitan Opera. Having previously guest conducted at both Orchestra Hall and the Ravinia Festival, Fritz Reiner was no stranger to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra when he became its music director in 1953. Under his leadership, the Orchestra made several landmark recordings for RCA Records including Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben, and Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky.

Institutions, Schools and Personalities (Translated by Andor Kelenhegyi) Introduction Hungarian musical performance practice have started to become an independent stream of art in the musical culture of Hungary during the 19th century, partly due to influential musicians, partly due to institutions established as a result of their work. This era is epitomized by two such standard-bearers, Ferenc Erkel and Ferenc Liszt, who as pianists, conductors and also as teachers have set out the bases of institutions which influence Hungarian musical culture up to the present day. They took active part in establishing the National Theatre in 1837; the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra in 1853; the Liszt Academy of Music in 1875, and the Hungarian State Opera in 1884. While Erkel participated mostly as a pianist and as a conductor, Ferenc Liszt was first only occasionally present, as a homecoming virtuoso. In his late years, however, he spent one third of his time in Budapest as a piano teacher and a conductor, enriching Hungarian musical life. The Academy of Music organized by them continues to educate talented musicians up until today. Thus, despite the changing framework, the tradition still survives. Naturally, events and inventions of the 20th century contributed much to the institutional background laid down in the 19th century. One of the novelties was the startup of the Hungarian Radio, which has been broadcasting music programs since its inauguration (December 1 1925) thus, providing opportunities for talented youngsters as well as for well- established artists to perform.
