This report provides an overview of the activities that can be classified under marine recreation and tourism and how they depend upon and impact our marine ecosystems. The development of the environment in marine areas is crucial for the possibility of future generations to enjoy recreation in these areas. The report describes how various activities may be affected in the future, along with the values that represent the people and Sweden in general. Within Europe, the efforts to implement new legislation around the marine environment have begun in earnest. In order to gather all maritime activities into a single framework, the EU has formulated a maritime strategy designed after three main directions: the Common Fisheries Policy, marine spatial planning, and common environmental legislation for the marine environment.

    Master in Economic Development and Growth The contribution of tourism development to economic growth of Sweden: A panel data approach Vladana Ajvaz [email protected] Abstract: By using panel data for 21 counties in Sweden from 2003 to 2013, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between tourism development and economic growth in this country, within the neoclassical growth framework. To address the objective of this study, the appropriate panel data methods are used, namely both static and dynamic panel approaches. The results show that tourism is a positive and significant determinant of Swedish economic growth. Moreover, the tourism coefficient proves its robustness through majority of performed estimations. Therefore, this study supports the existence of the tourism-led growth hypothesis in this Scandinavian country, which is in line with our expectations. Hence, macroeconomic policies that promote tourism expansion will directly stimulate economic growth and this is expected to happen in the future since Swedish tourism capacity is still not used at its full potential.     Accommodation and Border Survey Statistics in Sweden ACCOMMODATION AND BORDER SURVEY STATISTICS IN SWEDEN Peter Terpstra 1 Maj Eriksson 2 Abstract: In December 1999, the Swedish Tourist Authority commissioned Statistics Sweden to carry out a border survey on incoming tourism. In Sweden, as in many European countries, the first attempt to measure tourism was made through accommodation statistics. Since 1978 data has been collected from the service supply side: hotels, motels, youth hostels, campsites etc. The limitations are obvious, as far from all tourists stay in such establishments. We honestly believe that the experience has been extraordinarily positive both for the STA and for Statistics Sweden, although their responsibility for the design and execution of the survey has involved them in combating a number of problems which are described below. The Sami people living in Sápmi in northern Europe have started to engage in tourism, particularly in view of the rationalised and modernised methods of reindeer herding. Sami tourism offers job opportunities and enables the spreading of information. On the other hand, Sami tourism may jeopardise the indigenous culture and harm the sensitive environment in which the Sami live. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the supply and demand of Sami tourism in northern Sweden. This is presented in four articles, preceded by an introductory section describing the purpose, method, theory, background, empirical evidence, and with a discussion and summaries in English and Swedish. The first two articles describe Sami tourism from a producer (article I) and a consumer perspective (article II), respectively. The question is to what extent the supply of tourist attractions related to the Swedish Sami corresponds to the demand of the tourists. The first article analyses the potential of the emerging Sami tourism in Sweden, with special emphasis on the access to Sami tourism products.

    Tourism and Sustainable Community Development in Northern Sweden Patrick Brouder ETOUR Report 2014:2 Foreword Small businesses with tourism as a focus are found in many rural and peripheral areas, including northern Sweden. Tourism development in rural and peripheral areas has resulted in varying outcomes and tourism has often been undertaken as a last resort by communities. In this report, Patrick Brouder shows that tourism persists as a tool for regional development in northern Sweden and that tourism makes important local contributions. Tourism development in northern Sweden has led to employment gains and it also contributes to local community development. Tourism is not the solution for community development, but what this report shows is that tourism has a role to play in sustainable community development. The studies presented in this report highlight a number of key challenges and opportunities for sustainable tourism development in northern Sweden. These are discussed on three different levels: the regional level, the local community level, and the firm level. This report shows that sustainable tourism development in northern Sweden faces both challenges and opportunities. New tourism firms add to employment over time despite the failure of most new firms. Tourism entrepreneurs and market segments geographically distant from protected areas are drawn to them because of their unique attributes. How those distant stakeholders are integrated into management planning remains to be seen. Climate change is a long-term challenge to winter tourism in particular. Food tourism is underdeveloped but growing in northern Sweden and has potential to contribute to sustainable local food systems and community development.
