Troubleshooting – Who to Contact

Questions about the PS3 or Wii launches or about your early opening on Nov. 17 and 19? Contact Ask the Bus for Media on Employee Toolkit.

PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii Launch Playbook Page 2 of 25 PS3 and Wii Overview history will be made Nov. 17 (PlayStation 3) and Nov. 19 (Nintendo Wii), when two new console platforms launch for the first time in the same year since 2001 – within 48 hours of each other. With your application of the “It Selling Strategy” against a backdrop of our core values and Core Philosophies, customers will go with the end-to-end solutions that are just right for them and (most importantly) be glad they chose Best Buy.

Our learnings from the Xbox 360 launch last year support our belief that nothing is more important than the quality of the customer’s experience. From past launches, we learned that the average customer who purchases a console system from Best Buy comes back six times a year over a three-year period to buy games and peripherals. If you press the customer on Nov. 17 to buy your end-to-end solution, it may be the last time you ever see that customer. Don’t take the risk.

Instead, talk to the customer and find out what kind of gamer (hard core, family or value) he or she is. Ask questions and listen for the answers. The journey to the end-to-end solution is more than a checklist. It’s you and your customer talking about how and what they like to play, where and with whom. It’s you unlocking the secret of what makes your customer unique and sending them home with what they want.

Confidentiality Confidentiality protects Best Buy and its information. It shields the Company's business strategies from competitors. It helps prevent legal action against the Company and protects customers and employees. Confidentiality is critical and most of us know that it's not okay to disclose sensitive Company information with competitors, the press, Web sites, etc. However, not all employees adhere to policy and employees who violate the confidentially policy are subject to disciplinary actions up to, and including, termination of employment.

This playbook is confidential information of Best Buy. Don’t disclose it to anyone outside of the Company. Confidentiality protects Best Buy and its information. Keeping this information confidential not only helps protect the Company, it is your responsibility. Communicating or posting ad information, materials such as The Retail Insider or playbooks, is considered a direct violation of Company policy and is subject to disciplinary action up to, and including, termination of employment.

Employee Purchase Policy Due to inventory levels of PlayStation 3 (PS3) and Nintendo Wii hardware, there are strict requirements on employee purchases. An employee must be off-duty in order to purchase these products. Employees are customers when they’re not at work, so must follow same standard procedure applicable to customers:

• Stand in line with no preferential treatment • Receive line ticket based on placement in lines • Purchase of one unit per employee

Every employee is expected to uphold our values, adhere to our Company policies and keep a constant focus on our customers. Behaviors exhibiting direct violation of the Company policies and values will not be tolerated. The consequences for violating the Company values and policies will result in an immediate launch of an internal investigation resulting in a range of disciplinary actions – up to, and including, termination of employment.

The resale of any PS3 or Wii systems originally purchased at Best Buy by a current Best Buy employee is strictly prohibited. To view the Company’s Employee Purchase Policy, go to eGO and select Policies & Culture, Policies, Your Responsibilities & Behavior and then Employee Discount Policy.

Employees should talk to their managers to discuss or report questionable behavior. But if you don’t feel comfortable, you’re encouraged to call Best Buy’s Ethics Hotline at (800) 520-1132.

PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii Launch Playbook Page 3 of 25 The 4 Big Don’ts

No bundling. The sale of a PS3 or Wii hardware unit shouldn’t be conditional on the attachment of any good or service under any circumstances. Best Buy will offer PS3 and Wii hardware at the prices listed in the ad.

No bulk sales. • PS3 hardware (20GB SKU 8008513, 60GB SKU 8008489): Limit one per customer until further notice • PS3 and accessories: Limit three per SKU, per customer, until further notice • Wii hardware (SKU 8008559): Limit one per customer until further notice • Wii software and accessories: Limit three per SKU, per customer, until further notice

Clarity around one per customer policy: If you start with 20 PS3s, you’ll sell one PS3 to each of the first 20 people in line with their own form of payment accepted at Best Buy. For example, if Mark, Rick and Steve all come in for a PS3, Mark can’t use his credit card to pay for all three, not even on three separate transactions.

No sales before the hard street date. • Don’t display or sell PS3 hardware prior to Nov 17. • Don’t display or sell Wii hardware prior to Nov. 19. • No transaction activity whatsoever. This includes sold orders and employee sales. • Contact Ask the Bus on the Media page of Employee Toolkit immediately if you observe any other retailer displaying or selling PS3 or Wii hardware before their respective street dates.

No holding product for individuals. • Don’t hold any PS3 or Wii units for any customers or employees. • The also applies to customers who purchased a defective unit. Vendors will be able to expedite customer exchanges faster than retailers. For these customers, Sony and Nintendo have toll-free numbers. o PlayStation 3 – (800) 345-SONY o Nintendo Wii – (800) 255-3700 or www.nintendo.com/consumer/webform.jsp

Best Buy Ethics Hotline (800) 520-1132 This hotline is available for all Best Buy employees to call if they observe violations of the confidentiality agreement or any launch day practices (forced bundling, PRP inboarding, etc.) that aren’t consistent with our core values of honesty and integrity.

Don’t hold a midnight opening if you’re not on the list Given the limited amount of advertising funds available for midnight opening promotion, only a small number of stores could be included on this list. There are contributing factors in selecting stores to participate, including gaming revenue history, market demand, tenant and landlord contracts, advertising cost and TGM/DM approval. Stores not on the list above won’t conduct midnight opening events.

PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii Launch Playbook Page 4 of 25

What about Nintendo Wii? There won’t be any midnight openings for the Nintendo Wii launch Nov. 19, but all stores open at 9 a.m, unless prohibited by law or landlord situations, such as in malls.

Response to Inventory Questions For either PS3 or Wii, the basic messages to land when you’re out of inventory are:

1. We don’t know when the next shipment will be. 2. We don’t know how many units will be in that shipment. 3. We don’t know whether there’ll be another shipment between now and Christmas. 4. When we receive more, we’ll sell them to the first ticket holders in line, just like on launch day. 5. Limit one hardware unit per customer. 6. We’re unable to hold units for any customer.

Stay tuned to The Retail Insider and Hot News on Employee Toolkit for updates that’ll help you modify your message to customers or callers with questions.

(Reference your store specific map and planograms to review this “new” space.) • During the Reset 4 project, the FDMs set “Coming Soon” signage where the PS3 interactive will be placed (endcap sign) in addition to two inline “Coming Soon” signs (one for your software section and one for your accessory section). • The accessory section “Coming Soon” sign is built to be placed over the peghooks, to accommodate the Oct. 29 planogram set. • Your inline PS3 signs should be removed when PS3 software and accessories begin to arrive. • Sony will be sending the PS3 interactive kits to start arriving the first week of November. Hold these kits for Action Link (third-party). • Kits will ship between Oct. 27 and Nov. 3. Action Link reps will call each store to schedule a day and time for implementation (between Nov. 6 and 17). • Action Link will visit stores starting Nov. 7 to set-up the interactive during a before-store-opening visit. (They’ll remove the endcap “Coming Soon” sign.) • Reference your video game standards for parts and maintenance.

Q: If my customer has only $100 extra to spend with the PS3 purchase, what’s the priority of what I should recommend?

A: Trick question. There’s no list with the priorities listed one to 100. There used to be such a list, when Best Buy was more of a product-centric organization. With the introduction of the Best Buy Core Philosophies, the science of attaching profit to a sale has given way to the art of unlocking the unique end-to-end solution for your customer.

• Core Philosophy #1: Invite employees to contribute their unique ideas and experiences in service of customers. • Core Philosophy #2: Treat customers uniquely and honor their differences – as segments and individuals. • Core Philosophy #3: Meet customers’ unique needs, end-to-end.

In the end, your PS3 and Wii customers seek the best gaming solution for themselves and their families, or as the perfect gift. Either way, your application of the “It Selling Strategy” against a backdrop of the Best Buy Core Philosophies will result in you and your customer finding the end-to-end solution that’s just right.

Labor and Scheduling for Early Openings • For the schedule week of Nov. 12 to 19, stores will see increased labor budgets for Loss Prevention. This is to support customer traffic and crowd control and to help provide a safe working/shopping environment and experience for all. Business edits need to be made to the LP schedule to add an additional four-hour shift for the mornings of Nov. 17 and 19 (the labor is built in). • Since the entire store is open for business on the mornings of Nov. 17 and 19, you’ll need to ensure all customers receive help in every department. Most stores will need to dedicate six to 10 people to these launch events. If everything runs smoothly, you’ll return to normal operations well before lunch.

Line Management The mission is to create a safe environment for customers to wait when the line begins to form, as well as a fair and orderly process for distributing tickets. Give customers waiting in line a clear set of expectations about how many units will be available on launch day and when tickets will be handed out.

Communicate early and often From the front of the line to the very end, all customers need to know how many units will be available on launch day so they can decide for themselves whether or not to remain in line. As the line forms and grows, be sure to pass along the best, most accurate information you have.

Launch Day Logistics The mission is to create a quick and orderly process for redeeming tickets, present elements of the end- to-end solution and allow your customers to make the choices that are right for them.

Personal shopper model or assembly line model? While both of these models were used successfully with last year’s Xbox 360 launch, feedback collected from the field recently suggests that the personal shopper approach works best when you don’t have very many units. In the assembly line model, the customer goes from station to station and interacts with several employees, each tasked with presenting a component of the end-to-end solution.

When and how to hand out tickets? Hand out tickets for the number of many units you have 60 minutes before you open the doors. Starting at the front of the line, hand one ticket to each person in line. Since there are separate tickets for the two different PS3 SKUs, ask each customer which one he or she wants.

What do we do when you run out of tickets and have more people in line? Like in past launches, you’ll run out of tickets before you run out of customers. There’s a launch day offer for customers who waited in line and didn’t get a PS3 but still want a high-definition gaming solution.

• Three days only – Buy an Xbox 360 Pro System and two Xbox 360 software titles ($49 or more), and get a third Xbox 360 software title (of equal or lesser value) free. • Value Package ID 37280. • Offer valid Friday, Nov. 17, through Sunday, Nov. 19.

PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii Launch Playbook Page 18 of 25 Best Practices The following are some best practices from previous platform launches that help to maximize the comfort and safety of the customers standing in line.

Connect with Property Management well in advance to allow for these considerations and actions to be taken. Use the Ask the Facility.Bus form on Employee Toolkit. Click Forms, Inventory and then Equipment Repairs/Maintenance.

• Keep the lights on all night. Whether your store is a midnight sale location or not, there’s no telling what day and what time the line will begin forming. But surely customers will line up hours before the doors open. Work with your store’s Property Management to keep exterior lights on after regular store hours so customers won’t be sitting in total darkness. • Contact local law enforcement by Nov. 10 to inform them of the upcoming launches and the lines of customers we anticipate will form hours, or perhaps days, prior. Inform them that the lights will be on all night to illuminate the area where the customers will be standing and request that officers on patrol in the area pass through the area every couple of hours that night. • Portable restrooms are a great idea for stores holding midnight opening events or stores expecting a line of customers for 12 to 24 hours or more. Portable restrooms in the parking lot often require landlord approval, so connect with your store’s Property Management Team if you wish to provide this for your customers.

PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii Launch Playbook Page 19 of 25 News Media Requests

Best Buy PS3 and Wii Manager Approval News Media Policy This is effective for news media visits for PS3 and Wii (Monday, Nov. 13 through Sunday, Nov. 19).

The Best Buy Public Relations Department is instituting a manager-approval news media policy for reporters during the launch of PS3 and Wii. The policy allows the manager-on-duty to consider each media opportunity and determine if it is appropriate for their store at the time (i.e., Does it represent Best Buy positively? Will it help drive traffic? Is the right employee available for an interview?).

If you ever have a question about a story and whether or not you should participate, or if the inquiry isn’t directly related to PS3 and/or Wii, don’t hesitate to call the Public Relations Team at Corporate.

How to Prepare for the News Media • Identify two or three Blue Shirt spokespeople at your store in advance of launch day that are willing to talk to reporters, are knowledgeable about gaming and are great representatives of the Company. • Review the gaming Q&A and press materials available on Employee Toolkit (on the Media Department New Release/Presell page under Quick Access) or by e-mailing [email protected]. • Conduct practice interviews. What are all the potential questions? How can I get my message across?

PS3 and Wii Messages • Best Buy is your destination for the launch of PS3 and Wii and for shopping throughout the holidays. • There’s more content to enjoy on HDTV than ever before and now’s the time to update your home theater. • Our goal is always to connect people with the latest technology and entertainment experiences. o PS3 unleashes an HD entertainment experience with a built-in Blue-ray disc drive in both versions of the console, 60GB and 20GB. The 60GB premium version features wireless networking, a larger hard disk drive and memory card slots. o Wii reshapes the home entertainment and video game landscape with the entire family sharing in the experiences of a new generation in gaming. • Best Buy is helping customers get the most out of their gaming experience by connecting them with the products, accessories and services they want (list other popular gaming products when appropriate).

What Not To Say • Employees shouldn’t comment on any of the following topics (This information must be disclosed through Company announcements and is proprietary in nature): Product quantities, competitors, sales or inventory expectations, pending legal action, store traffic numbers, category-specific results and sales financials (competitive information). • If questions arise related to these topics, simply inform the reporter that you can’t comment on that, but you could forward them to PR or offer something you can discuss. • Example: How many units are available? We can’t break out specific numbers of units made available, but it’s a limited supply. Since we’re the place to be, we anticipate selling all units at stores on launch day.

Refer to the section of this playbook titled How to Handle the News Media (page 20) prior to this event and share the information with your teams. These guidelines include what to note when talking with the media, Best Buy key messages to incorporate into interviews and guidance on what to say if you are asked to comment about violent images in video games.

Pre-event Preparation Steps

Registers open/closing instructions The registers in all select midnight opening stores will be working in an online mode. Therefore, the store systems should remain active for the midnight opening.

• Don't close and reopen the registers for midnight opening. Closing and reopening will throw all the POS Back Office reports off. In addition, stores may experience delays in receipt of reporting since the data will be transitioning down at the same time that stores are ringing sales. • Do close and reopen registers for 9 a.m. or scheduled opening time. Stores must close all registers prior to 3:45 a.m., without exception. Reopen registers for 9 a.m. business, per normal opening guidelines.

Labor and facilities • Make sure your lights, air/heat and POS systems are scheduled appropriately for this event. • Notify your alarm service provider of the time you need the alarm set. • Schedule employees who will be able to provide customers with the expertise they’re seeking. • The following employees are minimum recommendations to work events: o Four Media employees o Two Loss Prevention employees o One Customer Service senior o Two Rep I employees o One Rep II employee

How many PS3 units should our store hold for 8 a.m.? Stay tuned to Action Center to get an exact number of units to offer at midnight. The balance of the first day’s allocation should be offered at 8 a.m.
