Karen Russell, Joe Bravo, Joe Harper and George Russell/BENOIT PHOTO After breaking his maiden while leading from start to finish at Gulfstream against special weight maidens going five furlongs at Gulfstream Park in his career debut on May 14, Pappacap, who is trained by recent Hall of Fame inductee Mark Casse, went to the post in the Best Pal as the 2-1 favorite and did not disappoint. Ridden by Joe Bravo from post three, Pappacap broke evenly but was unable to get the front-running position he took in breaking his maiden as fellow Florida-bred Bet On Mookie sprinted to the lead from post one while being joined by Everett Nevin Stakes- winner Thirsty Always to his outside. Meanwhile a confident Bravo kept Pappacap tucked in just behind the two frontrunners, who clicked off the first two furlongs in a quick :22.11. Bet On Mookie and Thirsty Always continued their battle in tan- dem around the turn as Pappacap saved ground in third before tip- ping out to the three path as they came into the stretch after a half-mile in :45.79. Finneus made a late run to get second and finish a length- and-a-half in front of Bet On Mookie in third followed by Thirsty Always, Aquitania Arrival and Florida-bred Our Empire, who broke slow at the start. “I was glad to see how well he settled in behind those two up front,” Bravo said. “His race in Florida, he just was pure speed. You don’t know if that’s the way they like to go. But he showed another dimension today. Mark Casse sends them out ready.” “He ran different. He stalked, which was a little concerning. But once he came around the turn there, he started his run and I think this is better,” George Russell said after the race. “Better finish. Better win. He’s maturing and getting better. I think he’s going to do what Mark expects of him.” Casse assistant Allen Hardy-Zukowski gave credit to Bravo for the patient ride that he said showcased the colt’s promise. See BEST PAL on page 5

BY BROCK SHERIDAN______Shea D Summer and Competitive Speed have exchanged wins against each other in their last two starts but the Florida-bred Shea D Summer took the rubber match Saturday at Gulfstream Park in the $75,000 Azalea Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs. Shea D Summer won the first meeting between the two stakes winners on June 5 when she won the $75,000 Game Face Stakes by two-and-a-half lengths ahead of Competitive Speed in second going six-and-a-half furlongs at Gulfstream. Then Competitive Speed evened the score in an overnight handicap at Gulfstream going seven fur- longs on July 10 after Shea D Summer broke in the air at the start and compromised her ability to use her front-running style. While Shea D Summer came back in deep stretch to take the lead, Com- petitive Speed rallied to win by a length ahead of Coach Jer’s Joy in second while Shea D Summer finished two-and-a-half lengths back in fourth. Florida-bred Shea D Summer/RYAN THOMPSON PHOTO In the Azalea, however, Shea D Summer and ond, a head in front of Competitive Speed in third with Kamar Taj jockey Emisael Jaramillo broke best of all from post four and went fourth. Wire to Wire August 9, 2021 Back to Top Page 9 Knicks Go Leaves No Doubt with Gate-to-Wire Whitney Victory
BY BRIAN BOHL, NYRA PRESS OFFICE______SARATOGA, NY—In the buildup to Saturday’s presti- gious $1 million Whitney Stakes (Grade 1), trainer Brad Cox talked about his optimism that Knicks Go would ap- preciate running two turns at Saratoga Race Course. The reigning Eclipse Award-winning trainer’s words proved prophetic, as the accomplished 5-year-old surged to the front and never relinquished the lead in a gate-to-wire four-and-a-half-length victory in the mile-and-one-eighth Whitney at the Spa. Korea Racing Authority’s Knicks Go entered the 94th running of the Whitney—for 4-year-olds and older—with momentum after dominating the mile-and-one-eighth Prairie Meadowns Cornhusker (G3) by 10 1/4 lengths last month in Iowa. The son of Paynter earned a 113 Beyer Speed Figure for that effort, which came after he ran fourth in the one-turn Grade 1 Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap won by Whitney rival Silver State on June 5 at Belmont Park.
Knicks Go again showed his dominant speed from the Knicks Go/DOM NAPOLITANO PHOTO outset under jockey Joel Rosario, leading the compact five-horse field through an opening quarter-mile in :23.42, the half Skydiver] sent a little bit and I was just going to see what they were in :46.76 and three-quarters in 1:10.32 over a fast track. going to do and take it from there,” Rosario said. “I was a half- As the even-money favorite, Knicks Go was never seriously length in front going into the turn and I just decided to keep him challenged when straightened for home, pressing on in a final time going forward. I thought the race at Prairie Meadows really tuned him up well. He was well within himself and that was his big work for this race five weeks ago. He had three maintenance works at Ellis and he came in here a fresh and happy horse, ready to go.” Cox saw Knicks Go earn an automatic entry to the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on Nov. 6 at Del Mar with the Whitney victory—to be run one year after winning the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland. Knicks Go commenced his current campaign with a win in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational in January at Gulfstream Park. After shipping to the Middle East to finish fourth behind win- ner Mishriff (Ire) in the Group 1 Saudi Cup and shortening up for the Met Mile, Knicks Go has now registered two blowouts to im- prove his career ledger to eight wins, three seconds and a third in 22 starts. “Maybe down the lane at the sixteenth pole I thought, ‘Oh wow’. He’s going to win this thing’, and at that point I was thinking, ‘What a horse. What a performance,’” Cox said. “For him to go forty-six and change and spread out down the backside and get away from them and just kick on at the eighth pole and have to fight off some really, really good challengers. This was an incredibly deep group of horses and I’m very proud of the effort of my horse today.” Rosario won his second Whitney, joining his 2016 win aboard Frosted. “I was challenged a little bit going to the first turn, but [Swiss
