Personal • Samantha Siegel became the surviving member of the stable named for Mace, Jan and daughter Samatha following patriarch Mace Siegel's death on Oct. 26, 2011 in Beverly Hills at the age of 86. Jan Siegel, Mace's wife, died at age 69 in 2002 following a long battle with cancer. A son, Evan, is not part of the racing opera- tion. • Mace Siegel, who moved his family to California in 1976, co-founded the Thoroughbred Owners of California and was an officer and board member with that organization for many years. He made generous donations to the California Retirement Management Account for retired racehorses and supported the chari- table Edwin Gregson Foundation. • A native of Jersey City, N. J., Siegel owned and operated shopping centers in the United States. The family's successful racing operation, Jay Em Ess Stable, became a familiar sight at tracks across the nation, but especially in California where the Siegels have been based for over 40 years. • Mace met Jan on a blind date at in 1962. They were married two months and five days later. Jan was a singer with big bands and her favorite song was a Cole Porter hit, "I Love You Samantha." They decided to name their daughter after the song. • Mace Siegel owned Macerich Company of Santa Monica, which developed, owned and managed regional shopping malls.
