PRESS KITS Group stage - Group E - Matchday 5 Wednesday, 15 December 2004 - 19:45 (local time) BT Cellnet Riverside - Middlesbrough MIDDLESBROUGH FC FK PARTIZAN MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Grzegorz Gilewski (POL) Assistant referees Slawomir Stempniewski (POL), Maciej Wierzbowski (POL) Fourth official Marek Mikolajewski (POL) UEFA delegate Janis Mezeckis (LAT) MATCH BACKGROUND Partizan look to extend unbeaten run With both clubs having progressed to the next stage of the competition, interest in the game surrounds whether FK Partizan, to date unbeaten in this season's UEFA Cup, can continue to inflict damage on English clubs in UEFA club competitions. While Middlesbrough FC lead the Group E and continue to make progress in their first season of UEFA club competitions, Partizan have been scuppering many English hopes for nearly 40 years, and by the narrowest of margins. United defeated The Serbians first meeting with an English club was in the semi-final of the 1965/66 European Champion Clubs’ Cup when Partizan upset competition favourites Manchester United FC. A 2-0 win at Belgrade set up the second leg, and, despite continuous pressure, United were limited to an own goal by Partizan captain and goalkeeper Milutin Soskic, as Partizan prevailed 2-1 on aggregate. Partizan lost 2-1 to Real Madrid CF in the final. Then in the second round of the 1984/85 UEFA Cup, Queens Park Rangers FC must have thought they were through to the next round after a 6-2 win at Loftus Road, after Partizan had briefly led 2-1. But Partizan then won 4-0 at home to advance on the two early away goals scored in London. Magpies lose Partizan then turned their attention to Middlesbrough’s neighbours Newcastle United FC in the first round of the 1998/99 Cup Winners’ Cup. Goals from Alan Shearer and Nikos Dabizas at St James’ Park were negated when Vuk Rasovic scored, and when the same player scored from the penalty spot in the return leg, Partizan were though on the away goal. But Partizan’s luck ran out in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup first round against Leeds United AFC. Having to play their home leg at Heerenveen in the Netherlands, Partizan lost 3-1 and Leeds cruised to a 4-1 aggregate win with a 1-0 success in the home leg. However, the Serbians were back to their old ways last season when Newcastle again suffered, this time in the vital third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. Newcastle won 1-0 at Belgrade and seemed set for the group stage, but Partizan not only won 1-0 at St James’ Park - thanks to Ivica Iliev's 50th-minute goal - but took the penalty shoot-out 4-3 to earn their first appearance in the group stage of the Champions League. State of play: Group E Middlesbrough FC, FK Partizan and Villarreal CF have all qualified, and only the final standings remain to be decided. Leaders Middlesbrough host Partizan, while Villarreal, level on five points with the Belgrade side, are at home to Egaleo FC, who like S.S. Lazio are already out. 1/9 1:17:50 uefa.com Matchday 5 - Group E - Wednesday, 15 December 2004 - PRESS KITS MIDDLESBROUGH-PARTIZAN PLAYERS PROFILES Middlesbrough FC Goalkeepers No Name Nat.
