The Chemistry Department 1946-2000 Written by: Edward M. Eyring Assisted by: April K. Heiselt & Kelly Erickson Henry Eyring and the Birth of a Graduate Program In January 1946, Dr. A. Ray Olpin, a physicist, took command of the University of Utah. He recruited a number of senior people to his administration who also became faculty members in various academic departments. Two of these administrators were chemists: Henry Eyring, a professor at Princeton University, and Carl J. Christensen, a research scientist at Bell Laboratories. In the year 2000, the Chemistry Department attempts to hire a distinguished senior faculty member by inviting him or her to teach a short course for several weeks as a visiting professor. The distinguished visitor gets the opportunity to become acquainted with the department and some of the aspects of Utah (skiing, national parks, geodes, etc.) and the faculty discover whether the visitor is someone they can live with. The hiring of Henry Eyring did not fit this mold because he was sought first and foremost to beef up the graduate program for the entire University rather than just to be a faculty member in the Chemistry Department. Had the Chemistry Department refused to accept Henry Eyring as a full professor, he probably would have been accepted by the Metallurgy Department, where he had a courtesy faculty appointment for many years. Sometime in early 1946, President Olpin visited Princeton, NJ, and offered Henry a position as the Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Utah. Henry was in his scientific heyday having published two influential textbooks (Samuel Glasstone, Keith J.

Don Quijote’s Barcelona: Echoes of Hercules’ Non Plus Ultra _________________________________ Frederick A. de Armas hen we envision the publication of Don Quijote, we think of the Madrid publisher, Juan de la Cuesta, whose name is found in both the first and second parts of the novel which appeared in 1605 and W 1 1615 respectively. Many are still surprised to learn that the first complete text of the two parts of the novel was published in Barcelona in 1617, the same year that the first edition of thePersiles y Sigismunda, Cervantes’ last and posthumous novel.2 Indeed, Texas A&M has recently acquired a copy of the rare 1617 edition as the four millionth volume for their Cushing Memorial Library collection.3 It is not alto- gether surprising that Barcelona be given this place Segunda Parte del ingenioso of distinction in the publication of Don Quijote. caballero Don Quixote de la Mancha (Barcelona, 1617). 1 Juan de la Cuesta first printed books in Segovia such as the Emblemas morales of Juan de Horozco y Covarrubias in 1591. Juan de la Cuesta married the daughter of María Rodríguez de Rivalde, widow of Pedro Madrigal, and took charge of the press in Madrid in 1604. He not only published the Quijote, but also Cervantes’ Novelas ejemplares and Persiles y Sigismunda. Many plays by Lope came out from his press as well as his epic Jerusalen Conquistada. But, we should emphasize that Cervantes’ novel was simply printed here. The actual editor was Francisco de Robles, who worked with Cervantes up to 1615.

Deposit guide Contact: email The Representations of Hercules and Hydra in Shakespeare’s Coriolanus Takashi Nishi Department of English and Humanities Birkbeck College, University of London Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, October 2013 Abstract This thesis relates Coriolanus to traditions of Renaissance and Reformation thinking on Hercules and Hydra, which had acquired new connotations in the age after neglect during the Middle Ages; and this study investigates the play’s engagement with that material and more precisely its active relationships to texts and ideas at present under-represented in its critical reception and especially by Shakespearean critics. Coriolanus highlights the conflict between the patricians including heroic Coriolanus and the plebeians, and Coriolanus describes the plebeians as “the many-headed multitude” like “Hydra” (2.3.16-17; 3.1.96). Coriolanus is compared to Hercules (4.6.104), and battle between Hercules and the many-headed Hydra is suggested in the play. If Hydra symbolises subjects, likewise Hercules stands for rulers. In short, the closer examination of Hercules and Hydra leads us to a deeper understanding of Shakespeare’s presentation of rulers and subjects.
