Job Description for

Careers Education Coordinator

Salary Scale: SO2 £28,800 - £30,390 pro-rated. Term time: 39 weeks plus two extra weeks in August

Responsible to: Deputy Head

Function of the post

The careers education co-ordinator is part of the schools Para professional support staff structure and will contribute to improving outcomes for students including increased attainment, aspiration and numbers progressing onto higher education and to apprenticeships. The careers education coordinator will also be involved with shaping the further development of the school ethos and culture. The post holder will share the school’s aims for the pupils and support and contribute to school policies in respect of equal opportunity, behaviour management and independence skills.

The post holder is responsible for providing a comprehensive careers/work related activities service in collaboration with other internal/external personnel, providing a coherent and needs based programmes of activities across the whole school.

The post holder must comply with all relevant Health and Safety legislation.

Objectives of the role:

 To improve motivation, attainment and progression by helping students relate their learning and achievement in school to the success of their future lives  To develop in students an awareness of career opportunities and the skills and knowledge to understand their needs and capabilities so that they can make informed and effective learning plans, decisions and transitions  To equip students with the knowledge, skills and attributes to understand the world of work through learning experiences inside and outside school  To increase the percentage of students gaining places at Russell Group universities

Careers Education:

1. To develop a development plan for careers education including comprehensive schemes of work for delivery through PSHCE lessons in Years 7-13.

2. Produce, monitor and evaluate a department development plan which is based on evidence relating to students’ knowledge and understanding of careers, progression routes and in line with varying interests and aspirations of students across the school. The action plan will have clearly measurable objectives linking to measures such as attendance and attainment of students.

3. Organising work experience/work shadowing placements across the school. Maintaining and developing a database of employers, matching WEX to students.

4. Tracking students in line with government legislation and producing reports which detail outcomes relating to improvement plan success criteria

5. Liaising with local businesses and other key organisations

6. Developing and implementing progression/enterprise days through faculties, at least one event for each year group and faculty per academic year

7. To produce destination lists and a report for leavers – at Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13

8. To work in collaboration with other key staff e.g, heads of house, heads of SEN, PSHCE and student services, Assistant Head – intervention and attendance officer in order to implement and evaluate a coherent programme of events for the whole school and to develop a system for tracking and monitoring to ensure all students have access to activities in each key stage.

9. To arrange for 1:1 interviews, drop in sessions and group sessions for cohorts and targeted students

10. To deliver, evaluate and revise existing work-related activities including those delivered in collaboration with brokerage of, for example, Construction Challenge, Take Your Daughters To Work, Careers In The City.

Careers Guidance

11. To be responsible for the management of careers guidance interviews including providing adequate preparation prior to interviews, arranging the interview schedule and ensuring action plans are produced within 10 working days.

12. To liaise with the SEN department to ensure that transition plans are completed for statemented students at the end of key stages.

13. To set up and maintain a careers guidance resource base both pre and post 16, including a range of information and guidance tools, including ICT based tools

14. Organise UCAS applications in liaison with Head of 6th form, tutors and G&T coordinator.

15. To organise careers advice and guidance to support transition during public examination publication periods – must be available last two weeks in August

16. To develop links with local HEIs and arrange for them to come into school to share information with staff, students and parents

Access HE

1. To be responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of access HE programme pre and post 16.

2. To be responsible for publicising information and opportunities on summer schools and university access courses and supporting students with applications and submissions

General

17. To keep abreast of developments in careers education and guidance, of tools and programmes and share information with relevant members of staff and students.

18. To attend the CEIAG sessions organised by and any other relevant steering and advisory groups.

19. To develop an evaluation system for all those activities within the remit of this post and to contribute to the school self evaluation process.

20. To promote the school, its ethos and culture in all activities involving external partners

21. To promote good behaviour by acting as a positive role model in all undertakings.

22. To attend parents evenings where requested

23. To achieve the investors in careers chartermark

24. Any other duties commensurate with the grade.

The post holder will be required to undertake training as required, to be effective in carrying out all duties. A willingness to work flexibly to meet the needs of the school is essential.

Qualifications and experience

1. To have completed training or education to at least level 3, including English at level 2 (E)

2. To have completed education or training at level 4 (degree level) (D)

3. To have worked with young people in an educational setting (D)

4. To have experience of administration at a high level. (E)

5. To have or work towards a qualification in careers guidance (E)

Knowledge and Understanding

6. To have a commitment to the education of girls and young women (E)

7. To demonstrate an understanding of how careers education and guidance and the work related curriculum can contribute to equal opportunities and inclusion in a multi-cultural society. (D)

8. To possess an up to date knowledge and understanding of, or interest in, the current developments in the secondary curriculum regarding Careers education and guidance and work related activities. (E)

9. To understand the importance of monitoring pupil progress in raising pupil achievement. (E)
