› Overview of the situation:

At this level dynamics are slower and incipient.

Motivation for work and business is not even detected at international scale.

Actually the profile of user of this line moves for tourism and leisure reasons, so the tourism sector should be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the arrival of HST:

– Tourism potential of the city itself (historical and cultural heritage) makes it suitable destination as a cultural, familiar and congress /conventions tourism

– The good geographical position and proximity to first order tourism destinations (Barcelona – Costa Brava) at less than an hour

› Main challenges:

 How can Girona:

– Take advantage of the potential of this two areas, connecting and complementing them without the risk of becoming only a crossing site or destination of daily excursions ?

– Attract the Barcelona visitors, and what can be done to make them stay overnight ?

– How to complement the airport supply ?

National /International:

 Madrid (3,23h) , (2,36h)

› Overview of the situation:

First year of operation: 1,2 milion of passenger of wich 294.754 (34%) are AVE users (long distance service)

Motivation for work and business is detected between Madrid and Girona: – 47% of users travel for business and work – 23% travel for tourism and leisure,

The existence of the HSL Madrid-Girona, has induced demand that did’n exist before for long distance travels (49% of users dind’t travel to this destination, before the implementation of HSL).

The central situation of the station, and the infrastructures of the city make of Girona a good destination for congress tourism

Thematic Workshop 5, Mobility, Implementation Phase I Girona 10 th – 11 th July, 2014 Page 7 Scales National/International:

› An experience: Girona Temps de Flors

IMPLEMENTED STRATEGIES : – Agreement Ajuntament de Girona – RENFE -> 8 extra trains / 16.000 promotional seats – 50% discount on HST ticket for visitors staying overnight in the city during the week – Special promotion of the event in cities connected by HSL (Madrid, , Barcelona…)

Thematic Workshop 5, Mobility, Implementation Phase I Girona 10 th – 11 th July, 2014 Page 13 Scales

Local: › Main challenges:

Being the HS station localted in the city center, the accessibility for users from urban and metropolitan area becomes a problem to solve.

– Although the intermodal potential is high, the Station has not appropriate links with the cathcment area by public transportation (interurban bus - train specially) – Non existance of integrated ticketing and lack of coordination between public transportation means – Travellers who live in the urban area and nearby towns usually use private cars – Cost of car, time and parking don’t compensate the reduction of time in SH, in immediate relations as Barcelona is (100kms) – Users from catchment area use peripheral stations of conventional railway (better accessibility and lower cost) and discard the HS.

How to make the Girona HS station become a real alternative to the car for the mobility (regarding Barcelona) of the populaton in metropolitan and regional level ? How to get a better connection with the rest of the territory and consequently influencing in an increasing uptake of users in the urban and metropolitan area ?

Thematic Workshop 5, Mobility, Implementation Phase I Girona 10 th – 11 th July, 2014 Page 14 Conclusions

› Regarding HST -> Two types of mobility: International/national level and Regional Level

› Regarding the international scale -> Impact on tourism Need of coordinated strategies between local administration, tourism sector and transport operators Girona has to look for its “own place” from Barcelona reference, taking advantage of connecting and complementig the two cities

› At regional scale -> Impact on labor market The immediate and medium term impact, pivots on regional lines, mainly in relation to labor mobility. This requires thinking on how it fits with a medium sized as Girona and a powerful ambit as Barcelona

› At regional scale -> Impact on regional mobility The HSL has highlighted structural and infrastructural deficits in the urban and regional mobility system due to a lack of appropriate links with the catchment area. Being the HS station located in the city centre, accessibility for people from urban and metropolitan area becomes a question to solve in order to avoid an elitist HS Station, only used for the citizens of Girona
