"Saturday, October 7.-- Alexander Brebner, groom, was charged with having, on the 25th of July last culpably, carelessly and recklessly driven a horse and gig along the public road leading from Burntisland to Thornton, in consequence of which the shaft of the gig, at a place in Gallatown, came in contact with Lillias Brochie and knocked her down, and the wheel of the gig having passed over her, she was considerably bruised and wounded, and had seven of her ribs broken. He pleaded not guilty, and a proof being led, the jury found him guilty of culpable and reckless driving, and he was sentenced to one month's imprisonment."

"The Alleged Theft by a Jeweller"
"The case of George Brebner (31), working jeweller, Hutcheon Street, which was reported in our columns yesterday, came up for decision before Baillie Berry at Aberdeen Police Court to-day. It will be remembered that Brebner was accused of stealing a watch from George Munro, watchmaker, Gilcomston Steps, by asking it on approval and afterwards pawning it. Accused had maintained that he had bought the watch, not got it on approval, and intended to pay for it. Addressing accused to-day the Magistrate said he had some difficulty in deciding the case as there were two contradictory statements made by Munro and accused. The one stated that the watch was got on approval and the other that it was purchased. In the absence of any evidence corroborative of Munro's statement, the Baillie felt compelled to give accused the benefit of the doubt, and he would find the charge not proven. Brebner left the Court saying he would pay Munro for the watch "right enough."
I wonder if Baillie Berry was related to George's wife Mary Ann? At any rate, it doesn't appear that George learnt his lesson...

"Theft From a Union Street Jeweller"
"George Brebner was charged at a pleading diet of a Sheriff and Jury Court today -- before Sheriff Brown -- with having in March, from the shop 151 Union Street, occupied by William Miller, stolen a brooch, and on various occasions between 28th May and 4th July stolen a set of studs and sleeve links and four brooches. He pleaded guilty. Mr. J.T. Jeffery, solicitor, having made a statement on accused's behalf, Mr. Wilson mentioned that the value of the goods was £6. Accused had been about two years in the employment of Mr. Miller. who was removing at the time, and thus made the thefts the easier. The Sheriff remarked on the serious nature of the crime, which was aggravated by being 14 committed on an employer. In respect that accused had not been previously convicted, the sentence would be restricted to forty days' imprisonment."

" The death has occurred, says a London cablegram of yesterday, of Mr. Arthur Brebner, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P, who was formerly a lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Deceased was the third son of the late Mr. James Brebner, manager of the Piccadilly (London) branch of the National Provincial Bank of England. He had travelled in China, Japan, the East Indies, and Australia, and in 1905 he married Alice Rose Ewing, eldest daughter of Dr. Alexander Steven, of St. Kilda, Melbourne. Articles from his pen have appeared in a number of Australian newspapers and periodicals, including the Melbourne "Argus" and "Age", and the Brisbane "Queenslander". Mr. Percy J. Brebner, deceased's eldest brother, who was also responsible for a great deal of literary work, died two days previously."
Arthur was an author in his own right, although his brother Percy was better known for his Edwardian novels. Arthur authored such works as "Patches and Pomander", "John Saint", and "Stories of the Temple Bar". His wife, Alice, had been trying to publish a posthumous work that she had completed, but had found little success in finding a publisher. Those endeavors had left her almost penniless.

"Victim of River Don Drowning Fatality.
"The body of the youth Alex. Bremner, 5 Mill Street, Gordon's Mills, Woodside, who was drowned while bathing in the River Don on Sunday, was recovered yesterday afternoon.
"In the vicinity of Devil's Rock, about a mile from the mouth of the Don, where the boy disappeared, the water is about thirty feet deep. All day members of the Aberdeen Police Force had carried out dragging operations, while the bereaved father, and other relatives of the boy, underwent the ordeal of watching.
"About 5.30 p.m. the police stopped for a short tea interval, but the dragging operations were continued by the lad's relatives, and it was by them that the body was recovered, about twenty yards south of the spot where he went down.
"The body was taken to the mortuary."
