Scope and Contents Some of the subseries in Series 7: SPORTS are identified utilizing DeVincent's original subject terms. In addition, the archivist has introduced other subseries titles Gambling and Games of Chance; Olympics, Sleighs and Sledding. This series contains 1,254 pieces of sheet music and song folios. Most of the sheet music is either piano or piano/ vocal arrangements. The material dates from 1834 to 1983. Some nineteenth- century imprints are not dated. The song sheets in this series are arranged into sixteen subseries and alphabetically there under. The largest subseries are Baseball (7.1) with 301 items and Football (7.4) with 239 items . The Football subseries contains mainly University and College football songs. The items in the folders are arranged by the name of the University and/or College and there under alphabetically. These institutions of higher learning are listed in the finding aid at the beginning of each folder. A small number of football and sports songs may be found in the University and College song Folios, which are located in unprocessed boxes under DeVincent's topical title "University and College." Nineteenth-century lithographic illustrations may be found on song sheets in several subseries including Fishing (7.3), Football (7.4), Hunting (7.8), Ice Skating (7.9), and Sleighs and Sledding (7.14). Pieces of music from operas "Der Freischutz" by Weber and "Cinderella" by Rossini may be found in the Hunting subseries. The Motion Picture Production folder in the Ice Skating subseries (7.9) contains mainly songs from Ice Review movies with Sonja Henie.     Second Edition - 2014 INTRODUCTION When I was asked if I would write the history of the Ancient Skiers, I was excited and willing. My husband, Jim, and I were a part of those early skiers during those memorable times. We had “been there and done that” and it was time to put it down on paper for future generations to enjoy. Yes, we were a part of The Ancient Skiers and it is a privilege to be able to tell you about them and the way things were. Life was different - and it was good! I met Jim on my first ski trip on the Milwaukee Ski Train to the Ski Bowl in 1938. He sat across the aisle and had the Sunday funnies - I had the cupcakes - we made a bond and he taught me to ski. We were married the next year. Jim became Certified as a ski instructor at the second certification exam put on by the Pacific Northwest Ski Association (PNSA) in 1940, at the Ski Bowl. I took the exam the next year at Paradise in 1941, to become the first woman in the United States to become a Certified Ski Instructor. Skiing has been my life, from teaching students, running a ski school, training instructors, and most of all being the Executive Secretary for the Pacific Northwest Ski Instructors Association (PNSIA) for over 16 years. I ran their Symposiums for 26 years, giving me the opportunity to work with many fine skiers from different regions as well as ski areas. Jim and I helped organize the PNSIA and served on their board for nearly 30 years.

A few are encapsulated and may appear in displays in the People or Politics room on the Museum’s first floor. Sheet music also is sometimes featured in temporary, but long-running, displays. People who lived in (or once lived in) McLean County donated most, if not all, of the individual sheets, booklets and books of music that represent the 90 years of music listed in this collection. The first section (Box 1, Folders 1 through 6) is devoted to music that has a direct connection to McLean County. Other sections in Box 1 include music with Chicago connections as well as other places in Illinois, a few other states and Canada, as well as cultural and subject-related music. Dance and instrumental music (with or without vocal) make up the bulk of Box 2 along with a listing and some sheet music by Irving Berlin and Walt Disney. Five folders (10, 11, 15, 16, and 17) are devoted to German instrumental music.

Bruce Humberstone Darsteller: Sonja Henie, John Payne, Glenn Miller, Lynn Bari, Dorothy Dandridge, Joan Davis, The Nicholas Brothers, Milton Berle Musik: Emil Newman Filmplakat Sun Valley Serenade (Motiv 1) Vorbemerkungen: Sonja Henie war eine sehr bekannte norwegische Eiskunstläuferin, die in den dreißiger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts große Erfolge bei den Olympischen Spielen, Weltmeisterschaften und Europameisterschaften feierte. 1936 entschloss sie sich, als Filmschauspielerin zu arbeiten. Hollywood unterstützte die Pläne von Sonja Henie sehr stark. Was lag näher, als die Stärken der Eiskunstläuferin zu nutzen und mit der sehr populären Big-Band-Musik von Glenn Miller zu koppeln. Zusätzlich wurde Dorothy Dandridge (später Hauptdarstellerin in Otto Premingers „Porgy und Bess“) und die tanzenden Nicholas Brothers verpflichtet. Ergebnis war ein erstklassiger Revuefilm. Glenn Miller trat erstmals als „Schauspieler“ in Aktion. Später trat er nochmals als Darsteller in den „Orchestra Wives“ auf. Beide Spielfilme sollen auf dieser Webseite besprochen werden. Handlung: In Idaho im Wintersportressort Sun Valley soll die prominente Sängerin Vivian Dawn (Lynn Bari) eine Skisaison lang auftreten. Dazu sucht ein Manager in New York eine entsprechende Big-Band, die die Begleitmusik liefern soll. Bei einer missglückten Probe feuert Vivian die ursprünglich vorgesehene Band. Zufälligerweise halten sich die Dartmouth Troubadours (Glenn Miller Big-Band) im gleichen Probestudio auf. Sie sind auf der Suche nach Auftritten für ihre Band. Der Pianist der Band Ted Scott (John Payne) kommt ins Gespräch mit der Sängerin und kann eine Probe mit der Sängerin vereinbaren. Die Dartmouth Troubadours proben mit ihr den späteren Millionen-Hit „Moonlight Serenade“.
