PRESIDENT'S CORNER:

If you were there, you know what I mean when I say, AMAZING, REMARKABLE AND WOW. If you missed it, I can only say that I'm a little sorry for you. I'm writing about THE ONE FOR THE RIVER PLAY DAY! held on the Lower Illinois River on Saturday, March 22, 2008.

First, let me thank Valley Branscum, your TFF Board vice-president and chair for this spe- cial project, for her vision of what this day could become, and then for her many hours of dedicated work in making that vision come together. Valley, from all us, your fellow TFF and TU mem- bers ... THANK YOU!

Then a special THANK YOU to those of you who gave of your time to get it all done, Syd and Sandi Scott, Ed and Suzie Kessey, and the entire behind the scene support of other board members. Del Moore for spending hours col- lecting raffle money. Mark Ballew, you and your bother are some special kind of Bar-B-Quers ... that recipe for cooking all night must be the secret. Tony Bulera, for your extra efforts and donations, thanks so much for spending Friday night with Mark. (That parking lot would be a cold, lonely and pretty scary place all by yourself, you are a true friend.) To all the tiers who showed up to tie flies for the crowds that came and to the fly casting instructors who showed us many of the skills of casting. Thanks to the ODWC for preparing the photos, and drawings of the habitat improvement plans that our efforts are in support of. Thanks to Dave and Emily Whitlock for coming and sharing their time, and thanks to all of our sponsors for your generous gifts to support the fund raising efforts, without which only part of the event would have raised the kind of money it all did. (We will release a final report on funds raised at our TFF meeting on April 10th.)

Then, a THANK YOU to all those who came, many who already knew before leaving their homes that there would be little, if any fishing on Saturday. Those who came from , Bartlesville, McAlester, and some from perhaps even further, thanks for showing up, we hope everyone had an experience you will not soon forget.

Finally, thanks to the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers, we know what was occurring on Saturday was not of your do- ing and we all understood. Seeing the sluice gate open and spraying 10,000 cubic feet of water per second into the air is almost worth the drive and a sight and sound experience one must truly see and hear in person to under- stand. I stopped at the Hwy.100 entrance to the dam area early Saturday morning to put in a sign and I could hear it roaring in the distance. The fact that the river was basically closed to fishing actually had a positive effect on the day. By keeping us all from heading down to the river to enjoy a day on the river, we were all blessed to truly able to spend that one special day together ... FOR THE RIVER.

Casting Lesson with Tony Bulera Tulsa FlyFishers Banner Gene Holland Casting

Pg 3 I have never felt so proud to be a member of TFF as I was on Saturday. All things considered, I too think the whole day was a success and just plain fun. I appreciate how the board all came together and how much hard work you all contributed to the success of this event. I must let you know that the original idea came from Tony Bul- era. He worked hard and gave a lot and I just want everyone to recognize his exten- sive efforts. Mark Ballew worked hard and he is to be commended for some of the best barbeque ever. I want to give a special thanks to Greg Dodds of Check UR Fly Guide Service. Greg made many contacts in order to get the word out on our event. Additionally, he is an up and coming TV star.

I want to thank all of the 89'ERs, Green Country Flyfishers and the Tahlequah bunch for their efforts in promoting our event. I believe that we as a club should re- turn the favor and really turn out and support the Smallmouth Rendevous in Tahlequah. I went for the first time last year and I had so much fun.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to my friend, Gina Leitle, otherwise known as "Trout Mum", of River Run Outfit- ters. Gina worked hard in giving casting lessons to so many people yesterday, including my granddaughter, Dylan. There were a lot kids and new people who benefited from one of our most consistent sponsors, River Run Outfitters. I want to thank Gene Holland for giving his casting demonstration. I also think the casting games were well received, even though some of those kids could cast better than any of us.

I want to thank some of our sponsors STIR, and Ed Brocksmith, you are my hero and a great advocate for our river. I indeed want to thank Dave and Emily Whitlock for coming and participating at our event. In addition, the Whitlocks contributed a wonder- ful portrait of a brown trout, its really cool. We will have this at one of our fundraisers. Reasors especially came through and pro- moted our event in numerous ways. As always, D&B Outfitters and the Gadget Company are constant and consistent sponsors of all of our endeavors.

Sincere thanks should go to Syd and Sandi Scott and Ed and Suzie Kessey for all their hard work in planning and serving lunch. Del Moore certainly made this event work for the club. Joe Mosely's contribution in fly tying and donating the Loomis fly rods as prizes. Other tyers were Ray Penick, Steve Crosby, and Dave Purdue. Additionally, I would like to thank Robert Post and David Barbee for the wonderful river music.

Finally, I want to thank Scott Hood and Mike Scott for their assistance and guidance. Wonderful job. Fred thank you for many wonderful pictures of the event. Additionally, I want to thank my friend and fishing buddy, Dick Turnbull, for all his efforts and sup- portive assistance in making this event happen.

In reflection, it was worth every effort just to see so many people benefit from being introduced to the wonderful sport of flyfish- ing. I am unsure how much money we made from this fund raiser; however, sometimes success is not measured in money alone. I personally know that we now have three new members of our club as a result of this event.

Hope I have not left anyone out. If so, it was not intentional. I am glad it is over.

Sincerely,

Valley
