Senator’s tenure is a curious issue Can Milton Wolf topple U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts in the Re- publican primary election in August? We’re inclined to doubt it, and we have plenty of company. But we’re also inclined to think Sen. Roberts ought to campaign as if anything is pos- sible. Dr. Wolf, a Leawood radiologist, is an unabashed tea party candidate who seems to consider Sen. Roberts’ tenure reason enough to dump him. It’s not a new tactic, and it’s hardly a guarantee of success, but that isn’t deterring Dr. Wolf. “Something very real is going on,” he told the Associated Press. “This era of the career politician is ending, which I think is a very good thing for America.” That era might be ending, though it’s hardly clear. And whether the ending of that era is a good thing would depend on what comes after it. What’s more, whether Dr. Wolf would be the beneficiary of this sea change might depend on how two others who seek the GOP nomination – Alvin Zahnter of Rus- sell and D.J. Smith of Osawatomie – fare. I think the casserole dates to the 1890s from what I have learned about the mark. It has a gold-colored pattern around the edge of the base and lid. I’m wondering what it’s worth. A: Arthur J. Wilkinson took over the Royal Staffordshire Pottery in Burslem, England, in 1885. The company, known as A.J. Wilkinson, Ltd., continued to operate for more than a cen- tury. Some Royal Staffordshire casseroles, even from the 1890s, sell for under $20. Others sell for prices in the hundreds. Tip: Never wash plastic dishes in the dish- washer. They may warp. Famous Hand The year was 1966, the place was Amsterdam, and B. Jay Becker, the former editor of this col- umn, was playing in the World Pairs Champion- ship with Dorothy Hayden. They reached three notrump as shown, and West (Victor Goldberg of Scotland) was on lead. He turned to Mrs. Hayden and asked, in a broad Scottish accent, “Did ye open woon cloob, lassie?” She replied that she had opened one heart, not one club, and Goldberg Zits • Jim Borgman & Jerry Scott thereupon led a diamond. Mrs. Hayden won with the queen, making a mental note that East almost certainly had the queen of hearts! She did not think Goldberg would have forgotten which suit she had bid if he held an honor card in the suit. At trick two, she led the spade eight and let it ride. East won with the king and returned a dia- mond, the jack losing to the king. Mrs. Hayden won the diamond return, played the spade nine to the queen and led the jack of hearts, confident that East had the queen. When East covered the jack with the queen, Mrs. Hayden ducked! She won East’s low-heart continuation with the king, and after West pro- duced the ten, declarer unblocked the eight from dummy. Diagnosing the situation perfectly, Mrs. Hayden then led a spade to the ace, returned the heart three, finessed the seven and so made three notrump. In effect, declarer played the hand as though she had seen through the backs of the cards. She took the deep spade finesse at trick two and also handled the hearts perfectly to make three notrump. Call it women’s intuition or anything else you like, but it all started with Goldberg’s in- nocent question about which suit she had opened the bidding with. (c)2014 King Features Syndicate Inc.
