World Latin American Agenda 2014 World Latin American Agenda 2014 In its category, the Latin American book most widely distributed inside and outside the Americas each year. A sign of continental and global communion among individuals and communities excited by and committed to the Great Causes of the Patria Grande. An Agenda that expresses the hope of the world’s poor from a Latin American perspective. A manual for creating a different kind of globalization. A collection of the historical memories of militancy. An anthology of solidarity and creativity. A pedagogical tool for popular education, communication and social action. From the Great Homeland to the Greater Homeland. Our cover image, by Maximino CEREZO BARREDO See all our history, 23 years long, through our covers, at: latinoamericana.org/digital/desde1992.jpg and through the files, at: latinoamericana.org/digital This year we remind you... We put the accent on vision, on attitude, on awareness, on education... Obviously, we aim at practice. However our “charism” is to provoke the transformations of awareness necessary so that radically new practices might arise from another systemic vision and not just reforms or patches. We want to ally ourselves with all those who search for that transformation of conscience. We are at its service. This Agenda wants to be, as always and even more than at other times, a box of materials and tools for popular education. Take a look also at «servicioskoinonia.org/teologiapopular», where we habitually publish our “courses of popular education.” latinoamericana.org/2014/info is the web site we have set up on the network in order to offer and circulate more material, ideas and pedagogical resources than can economically be accommo- dated in this paper version. As in the past, we will continue the complentarity between paper and electronic versions. You can download all the previous editions of the Latin American Agenda, in several lan- guages, in digital format here: http://latinoamericana.org/digital 2 PERSONAL DATA Name: .................................................................................................... • When Victims Rule
1 24 JEWISH INFLUENCE IN THE MASS MEDIA, Part II In 1985 Laurence Tisch, Chairman of the Board of New York University, former President of the Greater New York United Jewish Appeal, an active supporter of Israel, and a man of many other roles, started buying stock in the CBStelevision network through his company, the Loews Corporation. The Tisch family, worth an estimated 4 billion dollars, has major interests in hotels, an insurance company, Bulova, movie theatres, and Loliards, the nation's fourth largest tobacco company (Kent, Newport, True cigarettes). Brother Andrew Tisch has served as a Vice-President for the UJA-Federation, and as a member of the United Jewish Appeal national youth leadership cabinet, the American Jewish Committee, and the American Israel Political Action Committee, among other Jewish organizations. By September of 1986 Tisch's company owned 25% of the stock of CBS and he became the company's president. And Tisch -- now the most powerful man at CBS -- had strong feelings about television, Jews, and Israel. The CBS news department began to live in fear of being compromised by their boss -- overtly, or, more likely, by intimidation towards self-censorship -- concerning these issues. "There have been rumors in New York for years," says J. J. Goldberg, "that Tisch took over CBS in 1986 at least partly out of a desire to do something about media bias against Israel." [GOLDBERG, p. 297] The powerful President of a major American television network dare not publicize his own active bias in favor of another country, of course. That would look bad, going against the grain of the democratic traditions, free speech, and a presumed "fair" mass media.

  • SETTLER COLONIALISM and UTOPIANISM by Karl
UNSETTLING HOPE: SETTLER COLONIALISM AND UTOPIANISM by Karl Joseph Hardy A thesis submitted to the Cultural Studies Graduate Program In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada June 10, 2015 Copyright © Karl Joseph Hardy, 2015 Abstract This dissertation locates the manifold concept of utopia as imbricated with the project of English settler colonialism in the New World and the succeeding settler colonial societies of Canada and the US. I situate Thomas More’s Utopia as an early modern narrative that was mobilized to articulate notions of transcendental progress and universal rationality commensurate with Christian Humanism, which served to justify expropriation of Indigenous lands. I further locate contemporary Indigenous critical theoretical interventions into longstanding scholarly theories of nation and peoplehood. I argue that Indigenous critical theory, literary studies, and works of Indigenous speculative fiction serve an immanent critique to the settler utopian traditions of Canada and the US, which both reflect and further the naturalization of settler colonialism as an enduring force which frames the contemporary experience of globalization. This immanent critique is also applied to contemporary utopian studies discourses, including emergent discussions of “Non-Western” and “postcolonial” utopias. I proceed to an exploration of contemporary speculative narratives of Indigenous, racialized non-Native, and white settler peoples concerned with varying notions of indigneity. I argue such narratives propose desirable social change in ways that further naturalize or resist settler colonialism in their respective envisages of the future. ii Acknowledgements I am deeply grateful to all of my family, friends, teachers, and colleagues who have challenged and supported me throughout my time as a doctoral student, especially my supervisor, Scott Morgensen.

  • Playful Pedagogy and Polemic Bilingualism in the Contemporary Argentine Memoir of Immigration: Mario Castells’ El Mosto Y La Queresa (2012)
Juan Caballero Independent Scholar PLAYFUL PEDAGOGY AND POLEMIC BILINGUALISM IN THE CONTEMPORARY ARGENTINE MEMOIR OF IMMIGRATION: MARIO CASTELLS’ EL MOSTO Y LA QUERESA (2012) Abstract This essay explores Mario Castells’ deployment of Guaraní and Jopará (urban Spanish-Guaraní pidgin) within his Spanish-language memoir as a politically-charged form of immersive pedagogy (i.e., teaching the reader Guaraní as an end unto itself) but also as an autobiographical trope through which to explore the psychology of migration, multicultural identity, and memory. Political and historical context is provided to better understand the author’s and the novel’s positionality with respect to migration and nationalism. The essay also positions Castells’ appropriation of Anglophone models of the immigration memoir and reflects on broader trends in multilingual writing about migration beyond Argentina and North America. ISSN 2325-2871. CABALLERO w Playful Pedagogy In a decidedly oral register, the unnamed speaker of Mario Castells’ 2012 novelistic and folksy memoir El mosto y la queresa (The Ketchard and the Mustsup) narrates a family history of immigration through a bifurcated chronology that has become, by the 2010s, already conventional to the ever-more-codified international genre of the immigration memoir. To wit, Castells introduces the story as difficult to remember for how far back in his life it occurs, but also for how profoundly migration (and the second life of assimilation) shifts the terms of experience and memory.
