........................................................................................... 74 6 Acknowledgements ........................................................................................... 80 i The ISU and its work on Food Systems HRH The Prince of Wales established the International Sustainability Unit (ISU) in 2010 to facilitate consensus on how to resolve some of the key environmental challenges facing the world. These include food security, ecosystem resilience and the depletion of natural capital. The ISU works with governments, the private sector and non-governmental organisations, helping to strengthen partnerships between these sectors. The ISU has worked on sustainable agriculture and food systems since its inception. The chief focus of this work has been to clarify the economic arguments for a transformation in the status quo towards more sustainable, resilient and healthy food systems that contribute to human wellbeing. This has included the publication of a key paper in 2011 "What Price Resilience? Towards Sustainable and Secure food Systems" and work with Governments in Kenya and Colombia to help catalyse better economic understanding of the inter-relationships between food, water and energy security. The ISU has also conducted global analysis into the opportunities to scale up the application of ICTs and Mobile technology for Sustainable Agriculture. The ISU's recent work focusses on the opportunity to improve food systems outcomes by improving policy and planning for food at a city region level. The ISU has sought to increase the co-ordination between international organisations working in this field in the lead up to the Habitat III meetings in 2016. This work has included supporting the launch of a Global Call for Action on City Region Food Systems at the 7th World Urban Forum in 2014, and convening the Global Collaborative for City Region Food Systems alongside FAO, IFAD, ICLEI, HIC, RUAF and IUFN. Objectives of Report This report seeks to provide a synthesis of the current state of knowledge on City Region Food Systems. Its primary objective is to explore the concepts and evidence behind city region food systems and analyse the proposed benefits of pursuing a city regional approach to food policy and planning. The paper also seeks to provide a limited number of recommended actions that would help stakeholders ensure improvements to food systems outcomes at a city-region level and that would help advance food policy and planning at this level as a means of implementing a more integrated approach to rural urban development. This draft for consultation has been prepared by 3Keel for the ISU's meeting on Food Systems and Urbanisation, convened in London on Wednesday 4th February. A final version, following feedback from the meeting, will be released in April 2015. ii Executive Summary Sustainable urbanisation and the food system The challenge of food security is often framed as being one of feeding the growing human population of the world. But it is much more than just an issue of scale; the nature of the challenge is changing, as well as the scale. Population has not just been increasing; it has shifted in character from being predominantly rural to becoming urban. In the latter half of the 20th century the world’s urban population trebled in size and for the first time in human history, more people now live in urban areas than in rural ones. By 2050, two thirds of the world’s population are expected to be living in urban areas. Urbanisation has brought with it tremendous shifts in economic activity. It is also one of the predominant forces shaping food systems, which are becoming more globalised; with increasingly centralized networks involving fewer individual actors and supplying an increasing proportion of meat, dairy products and processed food. In many countries, and for many people, the availability and choice of food is greater than ever before, and significant progress has been made on reducing hunger worldwide. Yet one in nine people still suffer from chronic under-nourishment, half a billion people are obese, and one third of all the food produced is lost or wasted. In addition, the ecosystem services upon which our food systems depend are being degraded; not least by the way we produce food now, undermining our ability to feed ourselves in the future. Recognising that urbanisation increasingly shapes the challenge to food security suggests that the challenge is not a single global issue, but is instead an outcome of the myriad of food supply chains that take food from (mostly) rural areas to (mostly) urban ones. The challenges that are often framed as global issues are also bound to specific places, both in causes and impacts, and in our ability to effect change. In London, United Kingdom a network of alternative food initiatives exists challenging this agri-food system and bring about a transition to one that is more sustainable. However so far the unsustainable food consumption and production practices remain dominant and these alternative food initiatives remain on the fringes of society. In order to better understand the processes that influence the success of alternative food initiatives The Food Assembly, an initiative promoting local food purchased directly from producers online and distributed at local venues or Assemblies, was studied using the internal processes of learning, networking and articulation of expectations as an analytical framework. Contribution of an intermediary role of The Food Assembly headquarters (HQ) to these internal processes was also investigated. Semi-structured interviews were conducted of Assembly hosts and producers and a survey was conducted of members. The study found that existing learning processes could be improved for hosts through training on a range of topics including in particular marketing and for both hosts and producers through sharing sales analytics data.

Under-resourced health, education, and ​ ​ transportation infrastructures make children, rural communities, and those living below the poverty line among the most vulnerable populations to food insecurity. With this in mind, our report aims to answer the following research question: How are economic consequences of ​ COVID-19 affecting food supply chains and accessibility to food in India, Indonesia, and Nigeria? The present paper aims at reviewing the literature on which and how digital technologies support urban and regional agro-food purchasing and consumption, as well as their characteristics. Data collection was performed on Scopus and Web of Science. Articles were selected using a research string and according to specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flow approach was adopted to explain data screening and selection. The 57 resulting studies were included in the final qualitative analysis, which explored the characteristics of the research studies and of the digital technologies analysed. Most of the studies analysed concerned the implications of digital technologies on local food consumption, especially focusing on consumption, primary production and hotel-restaurant-café-catering sector (HORECA), and to a limited extent on the retail sector.
