Prof. Abdurrahman Atçıl June 2017, 86 pages This thesis aims at understanding the image of the Ottoman dynasty in the mind of a seventeenth-century intellectual, Müneccimbaşı Ahmed Dede (d.1702), based on his universal history, Camiu’d-duvel. It investigates the author’s various discursive strategies in presenting the legitimacy of the rule of the Ottoman dynasty in the Ottoman historiography. Written in a period when the Ottoman state experienced crisis and transformation, and the Ottoman sultans was exposed to many criticisms and challenges, an intimate officer of the sultan, Müneccimbaşı’s account provides an exciting opportunity to examine the attitude of the Ottoman elites about the roots of the Ottoman power and its future. In each chapter, I first offer an overview of the tools that the previous Ottoman historiographical tradition had made recourse to provide the Ottoman dynasty with legitimacy and then discuss Müneccimbaşı’s innovative use of these tools and revision of the previous historical presentations in a way that would serve his own ideological purposes. Osmanlı Devleti’nin kriz ve değişimlerle yüzleştiği bir dönemde yazan Müneccimbaşı’nın eseri Osmanlı gücünün menşei ve onun geleceği hakkında bir elitin görüşlerini incelemek için umut vaat eden bir imkan sunmaktadır. Bu anlamda, her bölümde, ilk olarak, Osmanlı tarih yazımı geleneğinde hanedana meşruiyet kazandırmak başvurulan kullanılan araçların genel bir çerçevesini sunulmakta, sonrasında Müneccimbaşı’nın önceki tarihlerim sunumlarında ufak değişiklikler yaparak bu sunumlara nasıl yeni bir form verdiği incelenmektedir. Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period.

    Women and Power: Female Patrons of Architecture in 16th and 17th Century Istanbul1 Firuzan Melike Sümertas ̧ Anadolu University, Eskisehir, ̧ TÜRKlYE ̇ The aim of this paper is to discuss and illustrate the visibility of Ottoman imperial women in relation to their spatial presence and contribution to the architecture and cityscape of sixteenth and seventeenth century Istanbul. The central premise of the study is that the Ottoman imperial women assumed and exercised power and influence by various means but became publicly visible and acknowledged more through architectural patronage. The focus is on Istanbul and a group of buildings and complexes built under the sponsorship of court women who resided in the Harem section of Topkapı Palace. The case studies built in Istanbul in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are examined in terms of their location in the city, the layout of the complexes, the placement and plan of the individual buildings, their orientation, mass characteristics and structural properties. It is discussed whether female patronage had any recognizable consequences on the Ottoman Classical Architecture, and whether female patrons had any impact on the building process, selection of the site and architecture. These complexes, in addition, are discussed as physical manifestation and representation of imperial female power. Accordingly it is argued that, they functioned not only as urban regeneration projects but also as a means to enhance and make imperial female identity visible in a monumental scale to large masses in different parts of the capital.     Correspondence of Ottoman Women 1 Running head: Correspondence of Ottoman Women The Correspondence of Ottoman Women during the Early Modern Period (16th-18th centuries): Overview on the Current State of Research, Problems, and Perspectives Marina Lushchenko Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Correspondence of Ottoman Women 2 Abstract My main goal is to investigate problems and possible perspectives related to studies in Ottoman women’s epistolarity (16th-18th centuries). The paper starts with a review of the current state of research in this area. I then go on to discuss some of the major problems confronting researchers. Ottoman female epistolarity also offers many directions that future research may take. A socio-historical approach contributes to shed new light on the roles Ottoman women played within the family and society. A cultural approach or a gender-based approach can also provide interesting insight into Ottoman women’s epistolarity. Moreover, the fast computerization of scholarly activity suggests creating an electronic archive of Ottoman women’s letters in order to attract the attention of a wider scholarly audience to this field of research.     Christian Allies of the Ottoman Empire by Emrah Safa Gürkan The relationship between the Ottomans and the Christians did not evolve around continuous hostility and conflict, as is generally assumed. The Ottomans employed Christians extensively, used Western know-how and technology, and en- couraged European merchants to trade in the Levant. On the state level, too, what dictated international diplomacy was not the religious factors, but rather rational strategies that were the results of carefully calculated priorities, for in- stance, several alliances between the Ottomans and the Christian states. Notes Citation Introduction Cooperation between the Ottomans and various Christian groups and individuals started as early as the beginning of the 14th century, when the Ottoman state itself emerged. The Ottomans, although a Muslim polity, did not hesitate to cooperate with Christians for practical reasons. Nevertheless, the misreading of the Ghaza (Holy War) literature1 and the consequent romanticization of the Ottomans' struggle in carrying the banner of Islam conceal the true nature of rela- tions between Muslims and Christians. Rather than an inevitable conflict, what prevailed was cooperation in which cul- tural, ethnic, and religious boundaries seemed to disappear. The amalgamation of these styles was often condemned in the old paradigm of Ottoman architectural history as a garish hodgepodge lacking the grandeur of classical Ottoman architecture. This paper will examine why and how such preferences emerged and establish what Michael Baxandall has called the “period eye.” Furthermore, I will investigate a point that Ottoman art historians who have explained the choice of style have omitted: nowhere do they mention the importance of the site for the valide sultan and the imperial family. My paper will thus contextualize the complex within the larger nineteenth-century urban fabric and the socio-political circumstances to elucidate better its function and significance. Overall I argue that the rich hybridity of the building together with the choice of its location was intended to testify to the powerful dynastic presence during particularly tumultuous years of the empire, while also projecting the aspirations of a strong female figure of the Ottoman dynasty.
