Nominally a celebration of Columbus' voyages 400 years prior, the Exposition was in actuality a reflection and celebration of American culture and society--for fun, edification, and profit--and a blueprint for life in modem and postmodern America. -

World’s fairs 1 World’s fairs made their appearance in the middle of the 19th century as the result of a development based on a tradition of medieval church fairs, displays of industrial and craft produce, and exhibitions of arts and peoples that had been popular in Britain and France. Some of these early fairs were aimed primarily at the promotion of crafts and industry. Others wanted to edify and entertain: replicas of city quarters or buildings characteristic of a city were erected thereby creating a new branch of the building industry which became known as coulisse-architecture. -

Allman If asked what late-19th century amusement park might have claimed to be "the handsomest park in the United States," first to come to mind would probably be part of the Coney Island complex or, on a more local level, perhaps Glen Echo Park or Marshall Hall. This boast, however, appeared in an 1893 newspaper advertisement for Bethesda Park, a short-lived (1891- 1896?) and rather obscure amusement facility in Montgomery County.1 In this, the centennial year of its inception, an examination of its brief history provides an interesting study of the practices of recreation and amusement in the 1890's and the role they played in suburban development. The last decade of the 19th century was the first decade of the era of the electric street railway, a major improvement in public transportation that contributed greatly to suburban development around American cities. With a significant extension of the radius of practicable commuting from the city center, developers could select land that lay beyond jurisdictional boundaries, embodied desirable topographical features, or fulfilled the "rural ideal" which was becoming increasingly attractive to urban Americans.2 The rural Bethesda District fell within such an extended commuting radius from the city of Washington, and had been skirted by the the county's first major transportational improvement - the Metropolitan Branch of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad completed in 1873. -

PART ONE Findings of Fact1 Plaintiff, Dr. John Romano, is a resident of the State of Massachusetts and the owner of the 1970 Porsche race car, model 908/3, that is the subject of this litigation. The machine is extraordinarily rare, one of only thirteen constructed, and each hand- made. It was designed to be run in the Targa Floria race held annually on the island of Sicily. The Ballroom is located in an enormous building, 170 feet long and 100 feet wide, having sufficient accommodations for 1,000 persons on the floor. The floor itself is the finest ever constructed west of New York City, having been built of the finest quality hard white maple, with a finish which rivals the polish on a piano. All about the dancing floor are located cafe tables and chairs, each with its menu card containing a list of temperance drinks. No liquor is sold in the Ballroom. Historic Amusement Parks and Fairground Rides Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which lack such a summary. This can either be where the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. Many of these are what might be thought of as ‘new heritage’, that is they date from after the Second World War. With origins that can be traced to annual fairs and 18th-century pleasure grounds, and much influenced by America’s Coney Island amusement park of the 1890s, England has one of the finest amusement park and fairground ride heritages in the world. A surprising amount survives today. The most notable site is Blackpool Pleasure Beach, in Lancashire, which has an unrivalled heritage of pre-1939 fairground rides. Other early survivals in England include scenic railways at Margate and Great Yarmouth, and water splash rides in parks at Kettering, Kingston-upon-Hull and Scarborough that date from the 1920s. Twenty five cents and it can be yours. C’mon, go ahead, make a guess. The answer to your questions. What was never seen before. The most amazing journey. Everything is behind this rope. Play. Guess. Coney Island is not even an island (anymore). It isn’t just a beach, or a neighborhood, or a bunch of rides. The Earthquake Float, the Skating Floor, the Falling Statue, the Human Cage, the Revolving Seat, the Funny Stairway, the Eccentric Fountain, the Dancing Floor, the Electric Seat, the Human Roulette Wheel. She is the Land Without Shadows (Narrioch), for the Native American Lenape culture or Conyne Eylandt (Rabbit Island) for the Dutch. Coney Island floats at the southern end of Brooklyn. South. This detail, the southerness, is important, even more than the westernness, if you want it to serve as a getaway (let’s think about Mexico for an instant in today’s American imagination). She is right at the bottom of Long Island. Part water, part land. Part here, part there. She floats over the waters, melts with the ocean, makes you think that between her and the sea there is no difference. -
