In a turn of poetic justice, she is sentenced to die in a gladiatorial spectacle, a quintessentially Roman punishment and entertainment. Jerusalem, in contrast, appears as a restored, urban Eden whose reward is to become the wife of the Lamb (Christ, resurrected and glorified). This imagery reflects not only theological ideas and literary traditions, but also social realities on which the text reflects. Patriarchal norms of gender and sexuality, evolving ideals of marriage, systems of slavery, and the connections between them are fundamental to this vision. Understanding them is crucial for the interpretation of Revelation. The text’s interweaving of these ideas and images generates a conclusion in which weddings, marriage, and freedom (all of which are simultaneously real phenomena and metaphors for true worship) triumph in an appropriately violent denouement over prostitution, adultery, and slave trading (also metaphors for idolatry). Cautious use of comparative evidence for slavery illuminates the connections between these phenomena and suggests new directions for future research. 4 RÉSUMÉ L’Apocalypse de St-Jean se conclut en comparant les figures de «Babylone» (Rome) et la «nouvelle Jérusalem» (les disciples du Christ). Il dépeint «Babylone» comme un prostituée et marchande d’esclaves riche, violente, et idolâtre et aussi comme quelqu’une qui a persécuté les fidèles. Dans une tournure de la justice poétique, elle est condamnée à mourir pour ses crimes dans le «spectacle» ou «jeux» de gladiateurs, une punition et divertissement typiquement romain. Mais la «Jérusalem» apparaît comme un nouveau Eden urbaine. Sa récompense est de devenir la femme de «l’Agneau» (Jesus Christ, ressuscité et glorifié). Cette image ne reflète pas seulement des idées théologiques et les traditions littéraires, mais aussi des réalités sociales sur lesquelles le texte reflète. Normes patriarcales du genre et de la sexualité, l’évolution des idéaux du mariage, et les systèmes d’esclavage sont essentiels à cette vision. Introduction The emergence of the critical dystopia genre in the 1980s allowed for the appearance of a body of literature capable of both informing and prompting readers to action. The open-endness of these works, coupled with the sense of critique, becomes a key element in performing a catalyst function and maintaining hope within the text. V for Vendetta , by Alan Moore, with illustrations by David Lloyd, first published in serial form between 1982 and 1988 and, later, in 1990, as a graphic novel is one of such works. Appearing during the political climate of Margaret Thatcher’s conservative government, it became a cult classic amongst graphic novels readers and collectors. A film adaptation was released in 2006, from a screenplay by the Wachowski brothers, to different reactions from the graphic novel’s creators; Moore withdrew his support and denied any involvement in the adaptation while David Lloyd publicly confessed his admiration for the movie. I first became interested in the series due to its gritty realism, and the enigmatic, cultured figure of the protagonist. In fact, V for Vendetta ’s universe is quite distant from the comic book genre, which is dominated by God-like figures such as Superman or Spiderman. Also, the sheer scope of reference in the work, ranging from Blake and Shakespeare to the Rolling Stones and The Velvet Underground, added to my interest, making it the subject of this paper.

Drawing analogies with Kasparov’s Advanced Chess and the deliberate development of unstable aircraft using fly-by-wire technology, the article argues for a collaborative relationship with the computer that can free the artist to more fearlessly engage with the challenges of working with emergent systems that exhibit complex unpredictable behavior. The article also describes ‘Species Explorer’, the system the author has created in response to these challenges to assist exploration of the possibilities afforded by parametrically driven generative systems. This system provides a framework to allow the user to use a number of different techniques to explore new parameter combinations, including genetic algorithms, and machine learning methods. As the system learns the artist’s preferences the relationship with the computer can be considered to change from one of assistance to collaboration.     English History as Jack the Ripper Tells It: Psychogeography in Alan Moore’s From Hell Ann Tso (McMaster University, Canada) The Literary London Journal, Volume 15 Number 1 (Spring 2018) Abstract: Psychogeography is a visionary, speculative way of knowing. From Hell (2006), I argue, is a work of psychogeography, whereby Alan Moore re-imagines Jack the Ripper in tandem with nineteenth-century London. Moore here portrays the Ripper as a psychogeographer who thinks and speaks in a mystical fashion: as psychogeographer, Gull the Ripper envisions a divine and as such sacrosanct Englishness, but Moore, assuming the Ripper’s perspective, parodies and so subverts it. In the Ripper’s voice, Moore emphasises that psychogeography is personal rather than universal; Moore needs only to foreground the Ripper’s idiosyncrasies as an individual to disassemble the Grand Narrative of English heritage.
