My fellow officers, directors, and I would like to welcome you to the 2019 Conductors Guild National Conference. Any event in New York City is bound to be an exciting experience, and this year’s conference promises to be one you won’t forget. We began our conference with visits to the Metropolitan Opera for a rehearsal and backstage tour, and then we were off to the Juilliard School to see some of their outstanding manuscripts and rare music collection! Our session presenters will share helpful information, insightful and inspiring thoughts, and memories of one of the 20th Century’s greatest composers and conductors, Pierre Boulez. And, what would a New York event be without a little Broadway, and Ballet? An event such as this requires dedication and work from a committed planning committee. -

The Baroque. 3.3: Vocal Music: the Da Capo Aria and Other Types of Arias
UNIT 3: THE BAROQUE. 3.3: VOCAL MUSIC: THE DA CAPO ARIA AND OTHER TYPES OF ARIAS EXPLANATION 3.3: THE DA CAPO ARIA AND OTHER TYPES OF ARIAS. THE ARIA The aria in the operas is the part sung by the soloist. It is opposed to the recitative, which uses the recitative style. In the arias the composer shows and exploits the dramatic and emotional situations, it becomes the equivalent of a soliloquy (one person speach) in the spoken plays. In the arias, the interpreters showed their technique, they showed off, even in excess, which provoked a lot of criticism from poets and musicians. They were often sung by castrati: soprano men undergoing a surgical operation so as not to change their voice when they grew up. One of them, the most famous, Farinelli, acquired international fame for his great technique and vocal expression. He lived twenty-five years in Spain. THE DA CAPO ARIA The Da Capo aria is a vocal work in three parts or sections (tripartite form). It began to be used in the Baroque in operas, oratorios and cantatas. The form is A - B - A, the last part being a repetition of the first. 1. The first section is a complete musical entity, that is to say, it could be sung alone and musically it would have complete meaning since it ends in the tonic. The tonic is the first grade or note of a scale. 2. The second section contrasts with the first section in tonality, texture, mood and sometimes in tempo (speed). 3. -
A Countertenor's Reference Guide to Operatic Repertoire
A COUNTERTENOR’S REFERENCE GUIDE TO OPERATIC REPERTOIRE Brad Morris A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC May 2019 Committee: Christopher Scholl, Advisor Kevin Bylsma Eftychia Papanikolaou © 2019 Brad Morris All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Christopher Scholl, Advisor There are few resources available for countertenors to find operatic repertoire. The purpose of the thesis is to provide an operatic repertoire guide for countertenors, and teachers with countertenors as students. Arias were selected based on the premise that the original singer was a castrato, the original singer was a countertenor, or the role is commonly performed by countertenors of today. Information about the composer, information about the opera, and the pedagogical significance of each aria is listed within each section. Study sheets are provided after each aria to list additional resources for countertenors and teachers with countertenors as students. It is the goal that any countertenor or male soprano can find usable repertoire in this guide. iv I dedicate this thesis to all of the music educators who encouraged me on my countertenor journey and who pushed me to find my own path in this field. v PREFACE One of the hardships while working on my Master of Music degree was determining the lack of resources available to countertenors. While there are opera repertoire books for sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors, baritones, and basses, none is readily available for countertenors. Although there are online resources, it requires a great deal of research to verify the validity of those sources. -

Racial Justice Through Class Solidarity Within Communities of Color
The Community-Building Project: Racial Justice Through Class Solidarity Within Communities of Color Joseph Erasto Jaramillot INTRODUCTION As people of color continue to face racial and socioeconomic subordination in this country, one wonders when, if ever, the "elusive quest for racial justice"' will end. Intellectuals dedicated to the pursuit of racial justice have focused their work on unmasking the operation of racism and white privilege and recognizing the perspectives of the oppressed. One central insight of this approach is the need to take race into account when analyzing the application of supposedly "race neutral" but so often racially discriminatory criteria. This strategy provides a theoretical basis for transforming society's view of racism and race relations. However, until the dominant culture becomes genuinely receptive to these ideas, communities of color will continue to suffer.2 Indeed, current political discourse adds fuel Copyright 0 1996 by Joseph Jaramillo. t Joseph Erasto Jaramillo received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), and his B.A. from the University of California at Davis. He is currently a staff attorney at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in San Francisco. He completed this Comment before he joined MALDEF. He would like to thank Professor Jerome McCristal Culp, Jr., of Duke University School of Law for his insight, former La Raza Law Journal Co- Editor-in-Chief Robert Salinas for his assistance and support, and Susana Martinez and Robby Mockler for their helpful editing and feedback. This Comment is dedicated to the committed gente of La Raza Law Students Association at Boalt Hall and all other schools, who give true meaning to the word "community." 1. -

Jason Robinson and Anthony Davis Dates Available in 2012-2014
Jason Robinson and Anthony Davis dates available in 2012-2014 “[For Robinson and Davis,] mood and interplay are more important than volume or scale.” -Ron Wynn, JazzTimes Magazine “[A] consummate summation of the jazz tradition in its most conversational and fundamental form.” -Troy Collins, All About Jazz “almost Ellingtonian in their lapidary elegance and beauty, highlighting the richness of Davis’ chordal voicings and Robinson’s big, brawny, Ben Webster-ish tone on tenor.” -The Stash Dauber “[I]nspired by their mutual passion for the music of Duke Ellington and spohisticated blues forms in a variety of hues, [their duet] is by turns lyrical and edgy, inviting and challenging. It’s steeped in jazz traditions that are handily extended, which is Robinson’s raison d’etre for making music.” -George Varge, San Diego Union-Tribune Moody, stark, and emotionally charged. Captured on their critically acclaimed debut recording Cerulean Landscape (Clean Feed, 2010), Robinson and pianist Anthony Davis have collaborated for more than ten years as a duo. Telepathic interplay, inspired improvisation, and dynamic original compositions carry listeners to a brilliant and evocative soundscape marked by emotional subtlety, a vast array of sounds, and poignant melodicism. With Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, and the post- 60s jazz avant-garde as central reference points, Robinson and Davis bring together their formidable experience in many different music worlds, spilling over the traditional boundaries of the horn/piano duo. One moment minimalist, another orchestral, another beautifully melodic – their duo invites us into a sound world of deep blues, a place of surreal horizons, intense emotions, and hypnotic melodies. -
