A man seeks to prove himself as a hero. A monster seeks silence in his territory. A warrior seeks to avenge her murdered son. A dragon ends it all. This radical new verse translation ofBeowulf by Maria Dahvana Headley brings to light elements that have never before been translated into English. The familiar elements of the epic poem are seen with a novelist’s eye toward gender, genre, and history — it has always been a tale of entitlement and encroachment, powerful men seeking to become more powerful, and one woman seeking justice for her child, but this version brings new context to an old story. While crafting her contemporary adaptation of Beowulf, Headley unearthed MARIA DAHVANA HEADLEY is a #1 significant shifts lost over centuries, transforming the binary New York Times bestselling author and editor, most recently of the narrative of monsters and heroes into a thrilling tale in which the novels The Mere Wife, Magonia, two categories often entwine. and Queen of Kings, and the memoir The Year of Yes. With Kat Howard she is the co-author of The End of the Sentence, and with Neil Gaiman she is the co-editor of Unnatural Creatures. Her short stories have been shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards, and her work has been supported by the MacDowell Colony and by Arte Studio Ginestrelle. She was raised with a wolf and a pack of sled dogs in the high desert of rural Idaho and now lives in Brooklyn. RRP: $27.99 RIGHTS HELD: UK & C’WEALTH 210 x 135mm paperback, 176pp (EX. Since Darwin’s day, we’ve been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science — as well as religious and cultural institutions — has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man’s possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman’s fertility and fidelity. In this groundbreaking book, however, Christopher Ryan and Cacilda Jethá argue that human beings evolved in egalitarian groups that shared food, child care, and, often, sexual partners. Weaving together evidence from anthropology, archaeology, primatology, anatomy, and psychosexuality, the authors show how far from human nature monogamy really is. With intelligence and humour, Ryan and Jethá explain how CHRISTOPHER RYAN received our promiscuous past haunts our contemporary struggles. They his PhD in research psychology at Saybrook Graduate School explore why many people find long-term fidelity so difficult, in San Francisco, focusing on why sexual passion tends to fade even as love deepens, why prehistoric sexual behaviour. Ri Cossée-Bommeljé My Mother’s Bookshelf Eva Cossée My mother (Ri Cossée-Bommeljé, 1919 – 2011) had to break off her studies during the German occupation of the Nether- lands. Then she met my father and supported him in his re- sistance activities. After the war she continued her education, looked after their three children, worked as a Religious Studies teacher, learned seven languages, and read (almost) everything. She liked to read books by and about independent women. Ida Simons, Josepha Mendels, and Dola de Jong were amongst her favourites. Many years later, after my mother’s death, as I was clearing out my parents’ house, I came upon these novels again. They were where they had always been; in her bookshelves. I took them home with me, and when I reread them I immediately under- stood why my mother had recommended them to me at the time. We decided to republish these novels at Uitgeverij Cossee. All of them to great critical acclaim, and sometimes also overwhel- ming sales. So she talks about her messy (sex)life: men, women, nobody, loneliness, fear - and lots of funny anecdotes.’ – NRC Handelsblad ***** ‘The history of my sexuality goes as follows: I’ve always been looking for someone who could close all doors and windows and say: now everything is all right. More concretely, I used to be attracted to men and then to women, but of course always to women anyway, to Muriël the red haired tutor with the long legs, to which woman was I not attracted to, really, but I always kept my eyes or something else crucial shut.
