  • A Review of Famous Songs of the Past
Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” May 2018 Track 1 My Very Good Friend The Milkman Johnny Burke was a lyricist, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s. In 1934, he and Harold Spina wrote "My Very Good Friend, the Milkman" which was a novelty hit for Fats Waller. Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943), born Thomas Wright Waller, was a jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me”. He was once ‘kidnapped’ by friends of Al Capone where he was taken at gunpoint to Al Capone’s birthday party where he was the surprise guest. Once he’d realised the gangsters weren’t going to kill him he played for 3 days earning thousands of dollars in tips! He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. Track 2 Hound Dog Hound Dog is a twelve-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. The song has been recorded more than 250 times with the best-known version being the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley.

  • GILBERT and SULLIVAN: Part 1
GILBERT AND SULLIVAN: Part 1 GILBERT AND SULLIVAN Part 1: The Correspondence, Diaries, Literary Manuscripts and Prompt Copies of W. S. Gilbert (1836-1911) from the British Library, London Contents listing PUBLISHER'S NOTE CONTENTS OF REELS CHRONOLOGY 1836-1911 DETAILED LISTING GILBERT AND SULLIVAN: Part 1 Publisher's Note "The world will be a long while forgetting Gilbert and Sullivan. Every Spring their great works will be revived. … They made enormous contributions to the pleasure of the race. They left the world merrier than they found it. They were men whose lives were rich with honest striving and high achievement and useful service." H L Mencken Baltimore Evening Sun, 30 May 1911 If you want to understand Victorian culture and society, then the Gilbert and Sullivan operas are an obvious starting point. They simultaneously epitomised and lampooned the spirit of the age. Their productions were massively successful in their own day, filling theatres all over Britain. They were also a major Victorian cultural export. A new show in New York raised a frenzy at the box office and Harper's New Monthly Magazine (Feb 1886) stated that the "two men have the power of attracting thousands and thousands of people daily for months to be entertained”. H L Mencken's comments of 1911 have proved true. Gilbert & Sullivan societies thrive all over the world and new productions continue to spring up in the West End and on Broadway, in Buxton and Harrogate, in Cape Town and Sydney, in Tokyo and Hong Kong, in Ottawa and Philadelphia. Some of the topical references may now be lost, but the basis of the stories in universal myths and the attack of broad targets such as class, bureaucracy, the legal system, horror and the abuse of power are as relevant today as they ever were.

Of interest is the case of the comic operas where the composer uses parody and allusion to create a persuasive counterpart to the libretto. The thesis attempts to place Sullivan in the context of his time, the conditions under which he worked and to give due weight to the fact that economic necessity often required him to meet the demands of the market.

WITH ILLUSTR^TIOD^S LIVERPOOL EDWARD HOWELL ,^o8 PREFACE It is not a whit surprising that although the annals of most of the other provincial theatres of importance have long been published, no one hitherto has written any record of the Liverpool stage. The difficulties of the task lie in the fact that data are at once too sparse and too abundant. Owing to the incompleteness of the collection of playbills in the I,iver- pool Free Library, there are many gaps in the story of the I/iverpool Theatres which it is weU-nigh impossible to fill- This is all the more regrettable as the remoter period in the annals of our local drama is much more individual and char- acteristic than the record of the last half century.

  • Spanish Music and Its Representations in London (1878-1930): from the Exotic to the Modern
Spanish Music and its Representations in London (1878-1930): From the Exotic to the Modern. Kenneth James Murray Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2013 Melbourne Conservatorium of Music University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper ABSTRACT This thesis argues that the landscape of Spanish music in London evolved between 1878 and 1930 from Romantic exotic constructions to a recognition and appreciation of Spanish musical nationalism, which reflected some of the concerns of post-war musical modernism in a newly cosmopolitan context. This transformation will be traced through the study of specific protagonists and events that contributed to the English reception of Spanish music during this period. While the development of Spanish nationalist music and its important intersections with French music have been studied in numerous texts, little has been written on the English engagement with Spanish music. A key event in defining musical and theatrical Spain in the latter part of the nineteenth century came from France in the guise of George Bizet's Carmen (1875, London 1878). The opera, and its many parodies and theatrical re-workings in London, provides a foundation for discussions of Spanishness in late nineteenth-century England, and influenced the reception of Pablo Sarasate and Isaac Albéniz. In the Edwardian era, closer ties between England and Spain, increased travel possibilities and specialist writers rekindled enthusiasm for Spanish music. The anti- German currents of the pre-war years and the influence of French writers and musicians set the scene for the further English appreciation of Spanish music in the aftermath of the death of Enrique Granados in 1916.

Go home or face arrest.’ These mobile billboards declared the number of arrests that had taken place ‘in your area’ in the previous week and provided a number to which people could text the message ‘HOME’ to initiate voluntary repatriation. In 2016, Theresa May, who had organised this scheme as home secretary, became prime minister, following the upheaval caused by the country’s plebiscite to leave the European Union. One of the main strands of argument of the successful ‘Brexit’ campaign centred on the ‘deep public anxiety … about uncontrolled immigration’2 and promised to reduce numbers of immigrants to the country.
