Brothers Wreck by Jada Alberts Director Leah Purcell Set & Costume Designer Dale Ferguson Lighting Designer Luiz Pampolha Composer & Sound Designer Brendan O’Brien
Media Release April 2014 Belvoir presents Brothers Wreck By Jada Alberts Director Leah Purcell Set & Costume Designer Dale Ferguson Lighting Designer Luiz Pampolha Composer & Sound Designer Brendan O’Brien With Cramer Cain Lisa Flanagan Rarriwuy Hick Hunter Page-Lochard Bjorn Stewart Belvoir St Theatre | Upstairs 24 May – 22 June 2014 ‘it shouldn’t be this hard... but look around ay? You're not the only one who's lost a brother this way.’ Brothers Wreck begins with a death: on a hot morning under a house in Darwin, Ruben wakes to find his cousin Joe hanging from the rafters. The play that follows tells the story of how Ruben’s family, little by little, brings Ruben back from the edge. It is a confronting and honest exploration of grief and loss but ultimately redemption. Jada Alberts, winner of the 2013 Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s Award, is an actor and theatre-maker with a powerful voice and a clear vision to tell the stories of her community. She is one of a growing group of young Indigenous artists who have looked to each other as much as they have to their elders for inspiration. Her play emerges from the gathering voices of this new generation and tells a deeply relevant and current story of the reality of life for many Indigenous families. An outstanding cast of Indigenous artists has been assembled. Rarriwuy Hick is gaining attention for her television performances in Redfern Now and The Gods of Wheat Street (ABC1). She is also a compelling stage actor, as well as a dancer and choreographer with Bangarra Dance Theatre. -

Sielanka an Idyll
Sielanka An Idyll by Henryk Sienkiewicz Sielanka An Idyll An Idyll. In the woods, in the deep woods, was an open glade in which stood the house of the forester Stephan. The house was built of logs packed with moss, and the roof was thatched with straw; hard by the house stood two outbuildings; in front of it was a piece of fenced-in ground, and an old well with a long, crooked sweep; the water in the well was covered with a green vegetation at the edges. Opposite the windows grew sunflowers and wild hollyhocks, high, stately, and covered with blossoms as if with a swarm of gorgeous butterflies; between the sunflowers there peeped the red heads of the poppy; around the hollyhocks entwined sweet peas with pink blossoms and morning-glories; close to the ground grew nasturtiums, marigolds, primroses, and asters, pale because they were shaded from the sunlight by the leaves of the hollyhocks and sunflowers. The fenced ground on either side of the pathway leading to the house was planted with vegetables—carrots, beets, and cabbage; further off in a separate fenced-in lot there waved with each breath of wind the tender blue flower of the flax; still beyond could be seen the dark green of the potato patch; the rest of the clearing was checkered with the variegated shades of the different cereals that ran to the edge of the lake which touched the glade on one side. Near to the house a few trees were growing. Some were cherry trees, and one was a birch, with long, slender branches which swayed in the wind, and with every breeze its leaves touched the dilapidated moss-covered straw thatch of the roof; when the stronger gusts of wind bent its boughs to the wall, and pressed its twigs and the waves of leaves against the roof, it would seem as if the tree loved the house and embraced it. -

The new studio was built onto the existing 1960’s handbuilt cypress pine ex- mission hospital building which had been the art centre since 1975. Since then I have been an interested observer. A nosy neighbor listening to the music coming over the fence. From within an art centre, which is a vehicle for serious lawmen and women to represent their law in natural media as a political and artistic act of resistance to the dominant settler culture, comes a completely different tune. A lilting, gentle, persistent, sweet melody of (mostly) women humbly working together to make beautiful things. It has been the sound of laughter and considerateness. The sound of compassion and empathy and respect and dignity. -

And where do we come from? Australia’s greatest Olympian Ian Thorpe, iconic Indigenous actor Ernie Dingo, and TV presenter and Queen of Eurovision Julia Zemiro set off on an epic journey of genetic time travel to find out. DNA is the instruction manual that helps build and run our bodies. But scientific breakthroughs have discovered another remarkable use for it. DNA contains a series of genetic route maps. It means we can trace our mother’s mother’s mother and our father’s father’s father, and so on, back through tens of millennia, revealing how our ancestors migrated out of Africa and went on to populate the rest of the world. -
