WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 2021 TAKING STOCK: UNIFIED, PA RAIDS THAT YIELDED >SIGNIFICANT CONTRABAND' NOW TERMED AS MOHAYMEN, GORMLEY >NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE' by T.D. Thornton One month after initially stating at a Pennsylvania Horse ARE ONES TO WATCH Racing Commission (PHRC) meeting that May backstretch raids at Parx yielded a "significant amount of contraband" and "items that have no business on the backside," Tom Chuckas, the director of Thoroughbred horse racing for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, gave a Tuesday update that now describes the yield from those searches in markedly less sensationalistic terms. "In the last months, enforcement action was taken both at Penn National and at Parx," Chuckas told commissioners at the June 29 PHRC meeting during his monthly briefing. AThat enforcement action consisted ofYvehicle searches, barn searches, vet trailer searches. In addition, we did out-of-competition testing both at Penn National and at Parx, and the preliminary results from these investigative enforcement actions is very, very minor infractions. I will then forward the full Kentucky Derby analysis to you by electronic mail. Thank you… _____________________________________________________ SANTA ANITA (THE GREAT RACE PLACE) Friday, May 5, 2017 FOR AMUSEMENT---AND NOT BEMUSEMENT---ONLY!!! (Of course, these are recommendations only, and there are no guarantees in this sport, but that is what generates its mystique. And so, please follow your own heart and mind, considering me as a mere advisor, when making your selections. In any event, I do wish you all the best in your quest to “predict the future,” because it ain’t easy. And remember, horses, just like us, have aches and pains, headaches, suffer fatigue, etc. Try not to get mad at me, I usually have excellent days, occasionally, not-so-excellent days: with all of the informative past performance data we handicappers have in front of us, we have no idea how a particular horse feels at race time. By way of example, maybe that 50/1 colt is in a big hurry because he has a hot fillie waiting for him back at the barn…so please stick with me if there are a few “speed-bumps” along the way.) This analysis is prepared under the reasonable assumption that (i) all turf races will be run on a “firm” turf track, and (ii) all dirt races will be run on a track graded “fast.” Should different conditions exist at post time for a given race, please temper these selections with your own best judgment in light of less-than ideal conditions.

Breaking from the outside in a field of six, Klimt was within striking distance in fourth down the backstretch as favored and fellow >TDN Rising Star= Straight Fire (Dominus) took the field through a quarter in :22.33. The favorite was pressed through a half-mile in :44.38 and looked well in control, but Klimt was gobbling up ground and drew on even terms with the pacesetter at the top of the lane. He turned back the favorite with a furlong to run and drew clear effortlessly. AComing to the top of the stretch, I knew he was loaded and I said, >I just hope that other horse [Straight Fire] doesn=t have another gear,=@ said trainer Bob Baffert, who was winning his 13th Futurity. Leam- ington accomplished a lot in that single year — com- mencing a stallion narrative that continues more than a century Ilater for William Stamps Farish III, founder of Lane’s End. The land was called Bosque Bonita when Confederate Brigadier General Abraham Buford returned home from the Civil War. Buford had greater success with Leamington than he did fighting to save Paducah, Kentucky, from falling to the United States. Buford, a sharp horseman who had built his own racetrack on Bosque Bo- nita, saw opportunity in Leamington. The horse had failed at stud in England, but this was Ken- tucky, ruined economically in the war. Few stal- lions remained after outlaws and armies from both sides had emptied nearly every horse barn in the state. Buford offered a stall to Leamington (he did not own him) and sent word to anyone who had managed to hang on to at least some mares. Leamington got down to work. In that one year he sired the inaugural Kentucky Derby winner, Aristides. He also sired that pride of Kentucky and most popular racehorse of the 1870s, Long- Founded by Will Farish, right, Lane’s End continues to thrive in the second generation, with Bill Farish, left, serving as second in command.

Thank you for purchasing the 2016 Belmont Stakes Guide presented by Guaranteed Tip Sheet and RacingDudes.com! The Belmont Stakes is the final jewel of the elusive Triple Crown, but will not get as much hype this year since no horse will be going for the Triple Crown. Called “The Test of the Champion,” the Belmont Stakes is run at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY, in early June. It is the oldest of the Triple Crown races and was first run in 1867. The race is the longest of the Triple Crown races ran at the grueling distance of 1½ miles for 3 year olds on the main dirt track. This year’s edition of the Belmont Stakes will be run on Saturday, June 11 at approximately 6:37 p.m. (EDT). This “2016 Belmont Stakes Guide presented by Guaranteed Tip Sheet and RacingDudes.com” will give you the information needed to hopefully make a nice return on one of the biggest days of horse racing of the year. With $7.5 million in purse money over 10 stakes races on the day representing most of the divisions in the sport, the Belmont Stakes day card is the summer version of the Breeders’ Cup on the east coast. This Belmont Stakes Guide will highlight all 10 Stakes races on Saturday, June 11 at Belmont Park and break down each race as follows: 1.
