The Leon Levine Foundation Makes Unprecedented Gift to Support Expansion at Levine Cancer Institute

In April, Carolinas HealthCare System announced a $25 million commitment from The Leon Levine Foundation to support the significant expansion of Levine Cancer Institute, including $20 million for infrastructure and $5 million in programmatic funding. The grant from The Leon Levine Foundation marks its largest to date, as well as the largest single gift in the history of Carolinas HealthCare System.

In 2010, The Leon Levine Foundation committed $20 million to establish Levine Cancer Institute, bringing a transformative approach to the delivery of cancer care in the Carolinas. The Institute’s unique access model delivers innovative treatments at facilities both within the Charlotte metropolitan area and beyond, thereby eliminating barriers to world class care for patients in less populated regions. Levine Cancer Institute has expanded to 25 sites within the Carolinas HealthCare System footprint and now treats 15,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients a year, putting it on par with some of the most distinguished cancer centers in the nation.

Inspired by the phenomenal growth Levine Cancer Institute has experienced since opening its doors in 2012, The Leon Levine Foundation stepped forward to help advance the $150 million expansion project that Carolinas HealthCare System announced in early March. The Leon Levine Foundation funding will support the construction of a seven-floor 250,000 square-foot advanced outpatient center adjacent to the Institute’s research and administration headquarters. This will expand hematologic, thoracic, and gastrointestinal oncology programs available in the region. The new facility will also enhance translational research capacity in several specialties and will provide space for continued growth of survivorship programs, integrative oncology, and rehabilitation.

2 GIVE CAROLINAS • SUMMER 2016 | CAROLINAS HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION As the need for comprehensive cancer care in the region continues to grow, the expansions supported by The Leon Levine Foundation will help ensure that patients have access to the best care available, regardless of where they live. “I am extremely grateful to Sandra and Leon Levine for their visionary support of the resources we need to provide broader and deeper treatment options for patients across the region,” said Derek Raghavan, MD, PhD, President of Levine Cancer Institute. “They are truly helping us to transform cancer care.”

“Almost every week Sandra and I are approached by someone who has been positively impacted by Levine Cancer Institute. It’s a facility which helps so many and is a real gem for Charlotte’s medical community.”

– Leon Levine

24 Hours of Booty Pledges $1.5 Million to Carolinas HealthCare System

On May 19, 24 Hours of Booty announced a new $1.5 million commitment to Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute and Levine Children’s Hospital. With this gift, 24 Hours of Booty will have donated more than $3.5 million cumulatively to both facilities to support adult and pediatric cancer survivorship and wellness programs.

The new commitment will assist in the expansion of the Institute’s world-class oncology rehabilitation program that is soon to be a major component of its growth plans. 24 Hours of Booty funding will also continue to sustain existing survivorship and integrative oncology programs such as healing arts, yoga, and acupuncture.

In addition, a portion of the $1.5 million gift will establish a more comprehensive pediatric cancer survivorship program at Levine Children’s Hospital.

“Seeing firsthand the results of our support over the years and the impact we are making right in the backyard of our event is empowering,” said Spencer Lueders, founder of 24 Hours of Booty.

Olsen Family Raises Over $1 Million for CHS Programs

Carolina Panthers All-Pro tight end Greg Olsen and his wife Kara embody all things great about Charlotte and they continue to demonstrate their commitment to the community they call “home.”

In 2013, the couple established the HEARTest Yard fund with Carolinas HealthCare Foundation after their son T.J. was born with a life-threatening heart defect. The fund, which serves families with hypoplastic left heart syndrome who are treated at Levine Children’s Hospital, has received more than $1 million in contributions to date through the fundraising efforts of the Greg Olsen Foundation.

From hosting annual charity golf tournaments, concerts, and 5Ks to selling Super Bowl shirts and serving on the Levine Children’s Gala committee, Greg and Kara have generated national publicity for the congenital heart program at Levine Children’s.

Greg Olsen takes the stage at the HEARTest Yard + Showmars 5K benefiting Levine Children’s Hospital.

The HEARTest Yard Fund

Through a partnership between the Greg Olsen Foundation and Carolinas HealthCare Foundation, the HEARTest Yard Fund offers a range of services to congenital heart patients, including in-home private nursing care, physical therapy and speech therapy, at no charge to families. The program ultimately aims to help prevent children's complications from congenital heart disease and improve their long-term health.

Showmars Gives from the Heart

Our friends at Showmars continue to open their hearts for children across the Carolinas through charitable volunteer work, donations, and events. In 2012, Showmars pledged $300,000, in honor of their 30th Anniversary, to the Partnership for Pediatric Hearts, a fundraising platform created to support the Congenital Heart Program at Levine Children’s Hospital.

Most recently Showmars partnered with Greg Olsen to host the HEARTest Yard + Showmars 5K. The event raised funds to benefit the hospital’s pediatric cardiology and heart surgery programs.

With roots in the nationally known Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, the Congenital Heart Center has brought world-class talent, expertise, and technology to Levine Children’s Hospital. The support of partners like Showmars ensures that this program will continue to rank among the top in its field.

Niki Voncannon Finds Inner Strength with Help of Levine Niki Cancer Institute

In May 2010, Niki Voncannon’s journey with Levine Cancer Institute began with a helicopter ride to the emergency room after her leg gave way beneath her, broken, as she was walking down a flight of stairs. “I don't remember much about the surgery or week that followed, except for Dr. Patt, my oncologist —he has a way of making you feel that everything is going to be ok,” Niki recalls. Her diagnosis was Ewing’s Sarcoma, a cancer that originates in the bones or soft tissue.

Niki’s medical team at Levine Cancer Institute went to great lengths to ensure she was comfortable during treatment. Niki calls one of her nurses, Tori, a “forever” friend for always making her feel special—often greeting her with a smile and comforting hug. Dr. Michael Livingston allowed Niki to receive treatment close to home in an outpatient clinic. Dr. Patt, Niki’s primary surgical oncologist, kept her focused on her course of treatment and encouraged her with stories of survival. She found special comfort in his story of a college football player who bravely faced his cancer diagnosis and returned to the field during his senior year at Boston College.

As Niki knows all too well, a cancer diagnosis can be devastating to a patient and her family. She counts herself as fortunate to have an amazing circle of support—from Niki pictured with her daughters family, friends, and community, to the doctors and nurses Olivia (left) and Victoria (right). at Levine Cancer Institute who made all the difference in her journey.

Two Events Go PINK for Breast Cancer

The DeAngelo Williams Foundation and the Charlotte Knights came together on May 14 to show their support for women’s breast health. The day started with 53 Strong For Sandra, an outreach event that provides mammography screenings and follow-up care, thanks to a generous gift of $10,000 from the DeAngelo Williams Foundation. At the event, Charlotte Radiology, in partnership with Levine Cancer Institute, offered its diagnostic medical services to 53 women, free of charge. The program is designed to serve under/uninsured women from the greater Charlotte area.

That evening, the Charlotte Knights hosted their annual Pink Knights baseball game. Pink baseballs and jerseys worn by the Knights were auctioned off during the game, with proceeds benefiting the Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund. The game and auction raised over $20,000 to support breast cancer programs and services at Levine Cancer Institute.

The Charlotte Knights presented Carolinas HealthCare Foundation and Levine Cancer Institute with a check for over $20,000 during the Pink Knights baseball game.

Bosom Buddies for Breast Cancer

For Bosom Buddies President, Cyndi Thilo, breast cancer advocacy is a cause that hits close to home. She has turned her family’s experience with the disease into a passionate dedication to breast cancer awareness and patient support. For over eight years, the Bosom Buddies organization—comprised of a group of tennis players at racquet clubs throughout the Charlotte area—has raised several hundred thousand dollars to support the Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Fund at Levine Cancer Institute, including $70,000 raised through this year’s tennis clinic alone. The popular pro-led tennis event was held over the course of three days in 2016 at Weddington Swim and Raquet Club, the Levine Jewish Community Center, Charlotte Indoor Tennis, and the Russell Tennis Center in Charlotte.

Funds raised by the Bosom Buddies are used to advance patient support services, breast cancer outreach, clinical research, and palliative care programs that Levine Cancer Institute provides to patients. Notably, funds raised by the Bosom Buddies in prior years helped to establish the “Bosom Buddies Image Boutique” at Levine Cancer Institute’s main campus.

Hendrick’s Learn Live Hope Raises Hope, and Millions

Building upon the fundraising success of years past, this year’s Learn Live Hope gala, hosted by Linda and Rick Hendrick, and Lynn and Marshall Carlson raised over $1 million. Levine Children’s Hospital was honored to be among a select group of charitable organizations benefiting from the annual celebration.

The gala started with a cocktail reception at Bootleggers Bar, followed by a seated dinner at The Fillmore and guest Linda and Rick performance by accomplished singer Danny Gokey—a Hendrick former American Idol contestant. During the event guests were inspired by Maddyn’s story of survival (see her Story of Hope on p.19), which her parents credit to the team of caregivers at Levine Children’s Hospital.

Special thanks to the Hendrick family for over a decade of support, and to SunEnergy1’s executive Kenny Habul for his family’s generous contribution to Levine Children’s Hospital during the Learn Live Hope auction.

Life changes in the blink of an eye: One day, the Ussery family had three healthy triplets; the next day one of their precious six-year- olds, Maddyn, faced a life-threatening virus that was attacking her heart. Maddyn had been in good health, visiting the pediatrician only for the occasional fever or cold. Unfortunately for Maddyn and her family, it was a common cold that attacked her heart and quickly turned into a grave situation.

With the care and dedication of the skilled medical team at Levine Children’s Hospital, Maddyn proved she was a true fighter – surviving two heart surgeries, a stroke, and a brain surgery in just a matter of weeks. Physical and occupational therapists at Levine Children’s Hospital helped Maddyn regain her motor skills and learn to walk again. Now on the road to recovery, every step Maddyn takes feels like a miracle to her family.

Maddyn’s recovery has been remarkable to her family, as well as to her medical team. After 75 days at Levine Children’s Hospital, Maddyn finally returned home in April.

Pictured: After 75 days in the hospital, Maddyn and her new giraffe friend (named Henry) left Levine Children’s Hospital with a smile!
