In FY 99, the microgravity biotechnology pro- gram investigated the structure of macromolecules through Earth- and space-grown crystals and con- ducted experiments in tissue engineering and basic cellular functions both in ground laboratories and in orbit. These cells were isolated from cartilage grown on Russian Space Station Mh'. Gray areas (green on cover) indicate the presence of estaserase, a key metabolic enzyme. Discovering how processing affects the structure and properties of materials is the focus of the materi- als science discipline. A microgravity environment allows a simpler view of the relationship of process- ing to structure. Several experiments have been con- ducted and are planned for investigating the formation of dendrites, a common microstructure in metals. This dendrite of pivalic acid was formed during a microgravity shuttle mission. The study of combustion science in microgravity contributes to the basic understanding of the com- bustion process and of how to prevent and control burning on Earth and in space. This photo was taken during an experiment on candle flames that took place on Mir. Fluid physicists participate in the microgravity program to understand the fundamentals of fluid behavior under various conditions. Microgravity experiments investigating liquid drops have con- tributed to our knowledge of microscopic and macroscopic processes, from the way atomic nuclei undergo fission to how planets are formed. This photo was taken during a drop experiment conducted on the space shuttle. Physicists use a microgravity environment to help them discover and understand the laws govern- ing our universe.

THE RHETORICAL CONSTRUCTION OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT: THE AVENGING-WOMAN NARRATIVE IN POPULAR TELEVISION AND FILM by Lara Stache A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee May 2013 ABSTRACT THE RHETORICAL CONSTRUCTION OF FEMALE EMPOWERMENT: THE AVENGING-WOMAN NARRATIVE IN POPULAR TELEVISION AND FILM by Lara Stache The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013 Under the Supervision of Professor John W. Jordan In this critical rhetorical analysis, I examine the contemporary avenging-woman narrative in popular television and film. As a rhetorical text, the avenging-woman narrative can be read as a representation of cultural constructions of female empowerment. In this project, I situate the contemporary avenging-woman narrative within the context of a contemporary third wave feminist culture, in order to articulate how the representations of female empowerment in the texts may be a negotiation of cultural tensions about feminism.

50ftqueenie made a request that really tickled my muse. So, rather than spoil you by telling you what she requested, I just present her story... Spike/Xander (pre-slash) Warnings: A bit of blackmail and manipulation Rating: Teen Episode Spoilers: Once More with Feeling 187,000 words Summary: Xander's been a bad boy, and Spike is about to figure out how to make the most of it. The Cost of Butterfly Kisses by Litgal Part One "Right then, you get all your singing out, then?" Spike asked. He lit a cigarette and looked around the Magic Box. Slayer wasn't around. It was just the sad little puppy-boy behind the counter. "What do you want, Spike?" Xander demanded, bristling with anger. Well, if Spike had to wait around for the slayer, he might as well entertain himself. If he was being honest with himself, he wanted to make a little trouble. If it weren't for the chip, he'd likely go out and gut some bloke and do something creative with the intestines. Days like this made him miss Drusilla. "Just thought I'd check in and see if ya were stupid enough to summon any more demons lately," Spike commented as he leaned against the counter. Xander flinched back from the question, but then, he should. It was bloody stupid. Harris had been around long enough to keep his mitts off magical amulets, and making a wish was even more idiotic than usual. Surprisingly, Xander didn't blow. "Go away, Spike," he said, his voice quiet, even if it was trembling with emotion.
