La Dyson School of Design Engineering Formerà Gli Ingegneri Del Futuro Nel Cuore Di Londra La Dyson School of Design Engineering formerà gli ingegneri del futuro nel cuore di Londra Sir James Dyson ha annunciato oggi l’apertura della Dyson School of Design Engineering presso l’Imperial College London. Dalla nuova Scuola uscirà la prossima generazione dei tanto richiesti laureati in ingegneria e leader del settore tecnologico. James Dyson ha dichiarato: “Vogliamo formare ingegneri audaci, dotati di astuzia commerciale, che sappiano utilizzare le loro capacità, coltivate alla Dyson School, per sviluppare tecnologie d’avanguardia e stimolare la crescita economica in Gran Bretagna.” La Dyson School sarà ospitata nell’iconica Exhibition Road, in un edificio venduto dal Museo della Scienza all’Imperial - il tutto grazie a una donazione di 12 milioni di sterline da parte della Fondazione James Dyson. L’acquisto contribuirà a finanziare la più radicale trasformazione nella storia del Museo. Prima facoltà di ingegneria fondata all’Imperial College negli ultimi vent’anni, dall’ottobre 2015 la Dyson School offrirà un master quadriennale in Ingegneria del design. Il piano di studi, sviluppato in collaborazione con gli ingegneri di Dyson con un’attenzione mirata al settore, è un connubio di disciplina tecnica e creatività. Gli apparecchi e gli ambienti di studio rispecchiano gli standard di settore e consentiranno a 400 studenti di progettare, creare prototipi e collaudare idee innovative. Grazie alla generosa donazione della Fondazione James Dyson e forti dell’esperienza settoriale di Dyson, avremo l’opportunità di creare una Scuola d’eccellenza a livello mondiale per una nuova figura professionale: un ingegnere capace di progettare il futuro.” Il reinvestimento dei proventi, approvato dal Cancelliere, permetterà al Museo della Scienza di destinare nei prossimi cinque anni oltre 20 milioni di sterline alla trasformazione di circa un terzo dei suoi locali, compresa la creazione di numerose gallerie permanenti. Ian Blatchford, Direttore del Museo della Scienza, ha spiegato: “Grazie al cospicuo sostegno ricevuto dai nostri finanziatori e dalla DCMS, questo investimento permetterà di realizzare piani ambiziosi per il nostro museo, stimolare l’immaginazione dei milioni di giovani che ogni anno ci fanno visita e ispirare una nuova generazione di scienziati e ingegneri. Il programma di studi prevede l’insegnamento delle nozioni di base dell’ingegneria, oltre a materie come il design thinking, il problem solving creativo e capacità gestionali e comunicative. Sviluppato in collaborazione con gli ingegneri di Dyson, il curriculum prevede anche tirocini obbligatori nel settore, lo sviluppo di progetti industriali e un modulo dedicato all’imprenditoria. Dall’ottobre 2015, i primi 40 studenti iscritti alla Dyson School usufruiranno degli attuali ambienti dell’Imperial College. Le ammissioni annuali saliranno a 90 posti entro l’ottobre 2017, quando le lezioni si svolgeranno nel nuovo edificio. L’accreditamento del corso è garantito dall’Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), dall’Institution of Engineering e Technology e dall’Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Le domande di iscrizione degli studenti saranno classificate in base ai rispettivi punteggi UCAS nonché tramite un colloquio durante il quale i potenziali laureandi potranno presentare un portafoglio di attività. Strutturati attualmente come programmi congiunti dell’Imperial College London e del Royal College of Art, i Master in Ingegneria del design e Global Innovation Design si serviranno del Dyson Building per le lezioni e per i laboratori di sviluppo dei prototipi. Il Post Office Building Il Post Office Building è ubicato all’angolo fra la Exhibition Road e la Imperial College Road. Sin dalla sua costruzione nel 1908-1910, l’edificio è stato utilizzato dalla Royal Mail in condivisione con l’Ufficio Meteorologico. South Kensington Classificata fra le mete culturali più visitate al mondo, South Kensington è anche un eminente centro di formazione, innovazione e ispirazione dell’arte e della scienza. Sviluppatasi dal lascito dell’Esposizione Mondiale del 1851, l’area era nota in origine come Albertopolis, in omaggio al Principe Alberto, che aveva suggerito di utilizzare le eccedenze finanziarie dell’expo del 1851 per finanziare la costruzione di una serie di strutture formative nei vicini territori disponibili. Esempi concreti di progetti di ingegneria del design già realizzati dagli studenti dell’Imperial College Q-Bot Ltd - Un gruppo di studenti ha lavorato alla creazione di prototipi di robot, pensati per accedere ad aree ostiche, altrimenti difficili o pericolose da raggiungere per un operatore umano. Nell’ambito del modulo di formazione, gli studenti hanno collaborato con Q-Bot Ltd per rispondere alle sfide concrete dell’azienda. La società progetta robot in grado, ad esempio, di spruzzare schiuma isolante negli interstizi sotto i pavimenti delle abitazioni. Una delle difficoltà riscontrate dagli studenti in tal senso è stata l’ideazione di un robot capace di muoversi in autonomia in spazi ristretti, mentre loro tiravano un lungo tubo per erogare la schiuma. Versioni più avanzate di questi robot vengono ora utilizzate da Q-Bot Ltd, che ha anche assunto alcuni laureati dell’Imperial. Gravity - Composto da una penna e da un tappetino, Gravity è uno strumento pensato per abbozzare schizzi di immagini digitali in 3D utilizzando occhiali a realtà aumentata.
