THE INFORMAL MEETINGS The early group formed an unorganized institution that centered upon the per- sonality of Titchener, who stimulated its attendants with his grace and wisdom and sometimes vexed them with his insistent punctiliousness. -

RAPHELSON UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN FLINT COLLEGE 1968 i PREFACE When I was first invited to draw together a history of the Department of Psychology, I was flattered and, I must admit, interested. Among the memories of my graduate years in Ann Arbor are the many hours spent listening to some of the senior men like Professors Shepard and Brown recall the events, issues, and people that were Psychology at Michigan during those less hectic years before the Second World War. To provide a complete and systematic context for these matters was a challenge for me. Over a period of almost one year, I interviewed and corresponded with present and former staff members; read personal, departmental and University papers; and have tried to put what I have learned into a “gestalt” that might pass for a history. The work seemed to fall conveniently into two parts which I have presented in two volumes. Volume One can best be called a narrative of the history of psychology at the University of Michigan. It begins with the work carried out by the philosopher-presidents Tappan and Haven, whose work in mental philosophy was typical of the day. The narrative concludes with the reorganization of the department carried out after the Second World War by Donald G. Marquis. In this volume the persons who “were” psychology at Michigan are introduced with sufficient detail to carry the narrative along. The main biographical data, however, has been presented separately to compose Volume Two. -

James Goodwin Western Carolina University The “Experimentalists,” created by E. B. Titchener in 1904, experienced growing pains and other stresses in the 1920s, raising concerns about its future. Those concerns became acute with Titchener’s death in 1927. At the 1928 meeting, several “elders,” hoping to maintain the group’s vigorous advocacy of basic research in the positivist tradition, formed a reorganization committee of 5. The committee ex- panded to 15, 10 of whom met the following year to debate alternative plans for a new organization. The result was an honorary society for established researchers, the Society of Experimental Psychologists. E. G. Boring’s highly personalized 1938 history of the original Experimentalists understated the value of the research contributions made by group members and, by overstating the degree of Titchener’s influence, devalued the important contributions of others (e.g., Raymond Dodge). One of E. B. Titchener’s notable, and controversial, initiatives was his 1904 creation of a group that came to be known simply as the “Experimentalists.” The group was composed of those devoted to the new psychology of the laboratory, mostly but not entirely from eastern universities, mostly but not exclusively interested in studying human mental processes and behavior, and they met every spring during Titchener’s lifetime (except for the war year of 1918). The location of the meetings varied, rotating among the laboratories of the leading members of the group. -

Heiser LEIDEN UNIVERSITY In this paper, we present the academic genealogy of presidents of the Psychometric Society by con- structing a genealogical tree, in which Ph.D. students are encoded as descendants of their advisors. Results show that most of the presidents belong to five distinct lineages that can be traced to Wilhelm Wundt, James Angell, William James, Albert Michotte or Carl Friedrich Gauss. Important psychometricians Lee Cronbach and Charles Spearman play only a marginal role. The genealogy systematizes important histori- cal knowledge that can be used to inform studies on the history of psychometrics and exposes the rich and multidisciplinary background of the Psychometric Society. Key words: history of psychometrics, academic genealogy, genealogical trees. 1. Introduction Psychometrics is a scientific discipline concerned with ‘quantitative measurement practices in psychology, education and the social sciences’ (‘What is psychometrics?’, 2018). The origin of psychometrics is often traced to the primary example of a model for measurement: the common factor model, constructed by Charles Spearman (1904), in which a set of observed variables is regressed on a common latent variable. This model provided the classical decomposition of test scores into general and item-specific sources of variance that enabled psychologists and psychometricians to systematically measure what Spearman called general intelligence or g. Psychometric research, commonly understood to cover the technical rather than the substantive side of test theory (Borsboom, 2006), has further developed and branched out in a wide array of modeling techniques such as classical test theory (CTT), structural equation modeling (SEM), item response theory (IRT), and multidimensional scaling (MDS) (Jones & Thissen, 2007). -
