In classical mythology, the nymph Salmacis loved the handsome but unresponsive Hermaphroditus, son of Hermes and Aphrodite. When he bathed in her spring, she forcibly embraced him. As Hermaphroditus struggled to free himself, Salmacis prayed that they never part. The gods granted her wish, and the two became a single being with both male and female sexual characteristics. (Ovid, Metamorphoses, 4.285 ff.) In ancient art Hermaphroditus, either specifically or as a generalized type, is a common subject. He is either nude or lifts his garment to expose his genitals; alternatively, a satyr, who mistakes him for a woman, assaults him. The most famous portrayal represents Hermaphroditus asleep, lying on his stomach, head turned to the side, and torso twisted just enough to reveal his breast and genitals. (National Museum of the Terme, Rome, and the Louvre, Paris.) Hermaphrodites disappear from post-classical art history until the Renaissance, when writers of alchemical treatises rediscovered them as non-erotic symbols for the union of opposites (a potent image for later Jungian psychology), and emblem books portrayed them as symbols of marriage. (For a modern interpretation, see Marc Chagall's Homage to Appollinaire, 1911.) The tale of Hermaphroditus and Salmacis was portrayed occasionally in Renaissance and Neoclassical art. Olympus. Mt. Olympus was the highest mountain in Greece. Zeus *God of the Sky and Ruler of the Olympian gods. He is lord of the sky, the rain god. *He is represented as the god of justice and mercy, the protector of the weak, and the punisher of the wicked. Poseidon *God of the sea and protector of all the water. *Widely worshiped by seamen. *His weapon is a trident, which can shake the earth, and shatter any object. *He is second only to Zeus in power amongst the gods. *He was greedy. He had a series of disputes with other gods when he tried to take over their cities. Hades *Hades is the god of the undedrworld and ruler of the dead. *He is also the god of wealth, due to the precious metals mined from the earth. *He is a greedy god who is greatly concerned with increasing his subjects. Hestia *She plays no part in myths. *She is the Goddess of the Hearth, the symbol of the house around which a new born child is carried before it is received into the family. -

Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

Box 20537 CY - 1678 Nicosia (Cyprus) Fecha de recepción: 30/06/2020 Fecha de aceptación: 15/10/2020 ABSTRACT: This article deals with Titus’ visit to the temple of Venus at Paphos in the second book of Tacitus’ Historiae. I argue that apart from its other literary intentions already mentioned by scholars, this digression implicitly connects Titus not only with Aeneas but also with Julius Caesar. Titus’ affair with Berenice that recalls Caesar’s affair with Cleopatra, Tacitus’ allusions to Lucan’s De Bello Civili where Caesar’s visit to the tomb of Alexander the Great is described, the πόθος- Motiv and fortuna’s favour that characterise both Roman generals, all contribute to connect Titus with Caesar and allow the reader to view a parallel between the Flavian and the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Furthermore, the particular digression allows the historian to present certain aspects of his work and his historiographic practices and to reinforce his credibility. KEYWORDS: Tacitus – Titus – Lucan – Caesar – Paphian Venus As a result of its geographical position, cultural contribution and multifaceted presence in historical developments, Cyprus makes a frequent appearance not only in ancient Greek, but also in Latin literature. Roman writers usually view the island as an important point of transition from the Greek world to the East and to Egypt, while they rarely neglect to turn their attention to Cyprus’ connection to the worship of the goddess Venus. -

ΑΡΣΙΝΟΗ ΕΥΠΛΟΙΑ Queen Arsinoë II, the Maritime Aphrodite and Early Ptolemaic Ruler Cult Carlos Francis Robinson Bachelor of Arts (Hons. 1) A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2019 Historical and Philosophical Inquiry Abstract Queen Arsinoë II, the Maritime Aphrodite and Early Ptolemaic Ruler Cult By the early Hellenistic period a trend was emerging in which royal women were deified as Aphrodite. In a unique innovation, Queen Arsinoë II of Egypt (c. 316 – 270 BC) was deified as the maritime Aphrodite, and was associated with the cult titles Euploia, Akraia, and Galenaië. It was the important study of Robert (1966) which identified that the poets Posidippus and Callimachus were honouring Arsinoë II as the maritime Aphrodite. This thesis examines how this new third-century BC cult of ‘Arsinoë Aphrodite’ adopted aspects of Greek cults of the maritime Aphrodite, creating a new derivative cult. The main historical sources for this cult are the epigrams of Posidippus and Callimachus, including a relatively new epigram (Posidippus AB 39) published in 2001. This thesis demonstrates that the new cult of Arsinoë Aphrodite utilised existing traditions, such as: Aphrodite’s role as patron of fleets, the practice of dedications to Aphrodite by admirals, the use of invocations before sailing, and the practice of marine dedications such as shells. In this way the Ptolemies incorporated existing religious traditions into a new form of ruler cult. This study is the first attempt to trace the direct relationship between Ptolemaic ruler cult and existing traditions of the maritime Aphrodite, and deepens our understanding of the strategies of ruler cult adopted in the early Hellenistic period. -

Every day the Sun rises above the Earth---this is the great god Helios drives his golden Chariot of the Sun across the sky. Once Phaethon wanted to proof his high blood and went to the palace of the god Helios. Helios saw Phaethon and asked him: – What brought you to my palace, my son? – Oh, the great and radiant Helios! - Please, establish your paternity. – It is true. You are my son indeed. Ask me everything you want to dispel your doubts. And Phaethon asked his father to allow him to drive the Chariot of the Sun instead of him. Helios was fearful at his son's request: - Bethink yourself, madman! It is above your strength, a mortal, to manage my Chariot of the Sun. Even the mighty Zeus cannot stay on the Chariot of the Sun and who is greater than he? But Phaethon insisted that Helios kept his promise and Helios had to agree. He put holy ointments on his son's face, so that hot rays would not burn it and led him to fiery horses who hoofed already. - Listen to my advice. Do not hurry the horses, they will run themselves, they are difficult to control. Keep the reins firmer, do not release them and try not to deviate from the route. Your way lies just between the Snake and the Altar. Do not go too low to the Earth, so as not to burn it, and do not go too high, or else you'll burn the sky. -
