November is the eleventh month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of four Gregorian months with the length of 30 days. November retained its name (from the Latin novem meaning “nine”) when January and February were added to the Roman calendar. November is a month of spring in the Southern Hemisphere and autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore November in the Southern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of May in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa. November starts on the same day of the week as February in common years, and March every year. November ends on the same day of the week as August every year. November's birthstone is the topaz. (Particularly, yellow) The Zodiac signs for those born in this month are Scorpio and Sagittarius Its birth flower is the chrysanthemum. Info from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November

FROM YOUR PARISH PRIEST My dear friends, What's a Canon? The Bishop of Lincoln has invited me, along with two other clergy in the Diocese to become an honorary Canon of Lincoln Cathedral. The ceremony of Installation (being out into a stall, a Canon's stall, in the cathedral) happens during Evensong on St Hugh's Day, 17th November. When our cathedrals were founded, during the Middle Ages, they were either monastic churches, abbeys, governed by an Abbot and a community of monks, or secular Cathedrals, like Lincoln governed by a Dean and Chapter. The members of the Chapter were priests who agreed to live by a common rule of life, a canon. A canon (small c) is a rule or law. The rule of law of the Church of is known as canon law. In the Middle Ages, Cathedral Canons tended to be rich and powerful, and there were a lot of them (51, I think). They received an income from the parish connected with their stall (or Prebend), even if they didn't live or work there. This was a system ripe for reform at the Reformation, and so since that time the there have been two sorts of Canon. Cathedrals are nowadays administered by a Dean and Chapter about four in number, called residentiary canons, as they usually live close to the Cathedral, and are deeply involved in its life and work. At Lincoln, the Dean chairs the Chapter and bears overall responsibility for the Cathedral, rather like I do for our parish churches. His colleagues are the Sub-Dean, who has responsibility for the maintenance of the building and the pastoral care of the cathedral congregation and community, the Precentor who has responsibility for worship and events, and the Chancellor, who is responsible for the Cathedral's educational work and is also Head of the Lincoln School of Theology, involved in the training of new clergy and other ministers. But the remaining 47 prebends aren't going spare. The Chapter nowadays includes lay people with certain specialised skills or interests. So Mr Martin Pickering will be made a Lay Canon and join the Chapter. I am already on the Chapter, representing the clergy of the diocese. Then from time to time the Bishop appoints honorary canons, perhaps because they undertake some special work in the diocese (the Diocesan Director of Ordinands, the Revd Jeff Heskins is to be made a canon on November 17th too), or as a recognition of services rendered over a period of years (I suspect I'm one of the longest serving clergy in the diocese), or maybe over and above the normal call of duty (The Revd Nick Buck, Chair of the DAC, a particularly onerous task, is also to be made a canon on that day). All are welcome at Evensong (please be seated for 5:15 p.m.), which will be followed by an informal gathering at Hackthorn Village Hall from 7:00 p.m.; the bar will be open, and there will be light refreshments. It is an honour for all our parishes, and I will be delighted to share the occasion with all. God bless us all. Peter Godden Signpost 5

BISHOP'S LETTER The Big Society At a recent meeting of all the UK Bishops we were addressed by not one, but two Government Ministers responsible for promoting The Big Society. They were charming, at times eloquent and anxious to affirm the role of faith and faith communities in building a society conducive to the common good. But at the end of it all we were left little the wiser as to what The Big Society is, and how we might recognise it when we see it. Sceptics see this vision as but a smoke screen for rolling back the State and cutting public expenditure by relying more and more on volunteers and local resourcing. Others are prepared to give the idea some benefit of the doubt. After all, don't local people know what is best for their locality, and isn't there a huge reservoir of good will waiting to be tapped as voluntary groups and committed individuals are freed from excessive top-down regulation in order to deliver services and enhance quality of life in the places where they live and for which they have a care? Isn't the up-coming Decentralisation and Localism Bill simply another version of love your neighbour as yourself? It is certainly a fact that Churches across have been promoting The Big Society in practice for many centuries - even if they did not describe it in those terms. We have not always trumpeted our achievements, and there is some truth in the observation that Anglicans go about doing good, and hope others will guess the reason why! Taking with us into the Church the concerns which affect our local community, and then going out from Church strengthened to address those concerns is crucial to who we are as the people of God, and if Government has now seen the sense of that and chooses to re-brand it as The Big Society then all well and good. However, there is a worrying contradiction at the heart of current policy initiatives. For The Big Society to work it needs to ensure that volunteers are supported, resourced and sometimes trained to do what is being asked of them. Government cuts seem destined to impact severely on centrally funded voluntary sector agencies which provide that back-up, and take responsibility for ensuring overall good practice and accountability. As our Diocese relies more and more on Voluntary Ministers to take forward our mission, so we have invested more and more in the training and support of those Ministers. Like Grace, The Big Society is free - but it isn't cheap! +John Lincoln

DAVID HAYES STORR David passed peacefully away after a short illness at his home in Long Sutton. He was born at Saxby and attended Normanby School and then went on to De Aston Grammar School. He worked for a year delivering milk for Connie and Poll Coles before starting his career as a policeman. David leaves Linda, his wife, and step sons, James and George, and a grandson, Lewis; also, his twin sisters Chris and Penny, brother-in-law Jean Michel, and nephews Charles and James. He will be sadly missed by us all. Thank you all, for your kind words and cards of support. From all of the Storr family in Saxby and Normanby.

PETER BELL I've included Peter Bell among our funerals this month, even though it took place in his own parish of Welton. Peter was not only one of our organists at Hackthorn for many years, also playing in the other churches from time to time, but a good friend to our villages, and involved in many activities. I know the Cabra Singers will miss him dreadfully. He was a very brave man in illness. Our sympathies go to Vera and the family. J. Marshall Funeral Directors For the most dedicated professional

THOUGHT OF THE MONTH People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centred; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough. Give the world the best you've got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway.

FAITH, HOPE AND CHARITY The three theological virtues, faith, hope and charity, are identical in the deeper sense of their symbolism. Ÿ Faith, according to St. Paul, is the state that is desired by the wise. Ÿ Hope is the foundation and maintenance of spiritual and moral strength. Ÿ Charity, which is most understood and should be practised amongst us, is compassion, kindness and sympathy, and belongs to that working of a generous nature to be attained by us all. The heart and essence of their virtues are:- Faith is the loyalty of the human mind concerning the truth of its own supreme being. Hope is the anchor of the heart. Therefore faith and hope are swallowed up in love of our fellow man. Charity, as it is understood and practised among us, is kindness of the heart, generosity, sympathy and compassion. So faith, hope and charity is Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end, and are the head and crown of Christianity. VANDALISM It was brought to my attention recently about a few cases of vandalism around the villages. One case was of writing in black permanent marker pen on a wall outside a house and another concerned graffiti on the wall outside Normanby Church. Most people are proud of their village, but it seems that a few “hooligans” are not, and are intent on spoiling the beautiful surroundings in which we live. I wrote to PC David Oakes about the matter; asking if he would include something in his “Bobbie’s Beat” article this month, but I believe he is unwell at the time of request, so wasn’t able to do it. I have been told the police are “dealing with it”, but with your help, they can “deal with it” more efficiently. I doubt very much if the individual responsible for the defacement is walking around on their own doing this, so someone out there knows who the main culprit is. Perhaps you’ve overheard someone “bragging” about it. Contact the police or the village contact with the information you have and let’s show the vandals that EVERYONE is proud of where they live. — UPDATE — A youth responsible for one of the acts has come forward and now cleaned of the graffiti they did. I haven’t got the full details about whether they came forward by themselves or was “asked to”, but the important thing is that they did. Well done to that person for taking responsibility for their actions. The deadline for entries in Dec/Jan’s Signpost is Monday the 15th of November at 6:00 p.m.

The meeting held on Wednesday 13th October 2010 had 4 Parish Councillors, County Councillor Lewis Strange and District Councillor Jeff Summers and the Clerk in attendance. FIREWORKS: If you intend to have fireworks for Guy Fawkes Night (see October issue of Signpost - page 38) would you please be considerate. Please only let them off on this night - not before or after and it would be even more helpful for those who have horses, sheep, cats and dogs to know the actual time you are letting the fireworks off - if they live near you. REMEMBRANCE SERVICE: November 11th - Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Once again a short Remembrance Service and the laying of a wreath will be held around the War Memorial, together with Owmby Parish Council and hopefully the school children. CEMETERY: It is hoped that Normanby Parish Council are joining with Owmby Parish Council to take control of the cemetery. WLDC are not being at all helpful in getting the cemetery tidied up, nor helping towards the taking over. This will involve a lot of expense, so until we know the "final figure" it is not a foregone conclusion that either Normanby or Owmby will in fact take over control. HIGHWAYS: We are still trying to resolve the terrible road condition left by the contractors who dealt with the edges of the road along Highgate Lane. We are still waiting for the school safety zone markings to be completed. It is an ongoing battle to get the grass verge down Mill Lane to be cut regularly, but then what is life if not a battle! If you see any problems with potholes, dangerous verges, overgrown trees and grass which make it hazardous for drivers and pedestrian, please let the Clerk know. PARKING: Would anyone who has to leave their vehicle outside their (or anyone else's) property, please park considerately. Not on a bend, not near a junction, not near someone's drive and if parking overnight - remember to park on the correct side of the road i.e. not facing oncoming traffic. CLUB FOR YOUNG PEOPLE: Unfortunately, this club is still suspended due to the lack of an out of hours caretaker. Apparently it is the only group which is denied use of the hall for this reason and it hoped that the School Governors will resolve this matter as soon as possible. Next full Parish Council Meeting will be held on Wednesday 1st December in the dining room of the Bottle and Glass. RUBBISH Having walked through Normanby and Owmby, I was really upset to see the amount of rubbish thrown into the hedges and dropped on the roadside. Most of this had obviously come from my shop. The sale of tickets and raffle made a clear profit of £362.50, which is to be divided between the Bishops Harvest Appeal -see Sept. Signpost (people affected by drought and leprosy) and the Notts and Lincs Air Ambulance (£181.25 each). A very big thank you to everyone who supplied and prepared the food, cooked and served it on the day, and to all those who came and supported the event, to make it so successful.

OWMBY HARVEST FESTIVAL AND LUNCH After our Harvest Family Service on the 26th Sept. we had a buffet lunch in Church there were over 25 of us including children, there was plenty for everyone's taste, savoury or sweet. The donations from the sale of the produce and from the lunch we raised £80, which we have decided to send to the Lincolnshire Trust for Cats, a charity we have not used before. Many thanks to everyone who worked hard and donated the food, and helped on the day, also those who stayed after the service to enjoy the lunch and make it a success.

THE SPONSORED BIKE RIDE Due to other commitments in the afternoon, I just cycled for three hours in the morning, it was lovely weather, and I called at Welton, Hackthorn, Saxby, Spridlington and Owmby churches, there were no slips to pick up in three of the churches to prove I had been, but I found someone to sign my form, and I signed their visitors book! Thank you very much to all who have sponsored me, it is much appreciated, my grand total is £175.00, which is split between Owmby Church and Lincolnshire Churches Trust. Avril

NORMANBY-BY-SPITAL PRIMARY SCHOOL We have had an enjoyable first few weeks of term which have passed quickly. The children have settled back into the school routines and made the six children new to school feel welcome. A day spent celebrating and learning how to play games from around the world was a great success. The highlight of the day was a demonstration by each class of French skipping and a race between staff and Years Five and Six... staff narrowly being beaten by the children! Our fundraising efforts in support of the Pakistan flood relief have been continuing. The evening disco was well attended and a cake sale and car wash helped to raise a total of £191.74 Thank you to Mr Dobbs and Mr Cain for spending the afternoon elbow deep in soapy water! Our next project is to raise money for The Royal National Institute of Blind People. Any used postage stamps can be donated to school and would be gladly received. Natural Born Swimmers

Water Babies have been running classes in Lincolnshire for the past three years. And the good news is that it’s never too early to take your baby to the pool - as long as the water’s warm enough.

The multi award-winning Water Babies course teaches using voice commands – learning to respond to these is excellent for your baby’s mental development. Lessons last half an hour and provide a complete physical work out. Swimming is also excellent for enhancing the bond between parent and child. And, with the emphasis on having fun, lessons are a great way of making new friends.

The other obvious benefit is water safety. With carefully structured training, babies can be taught life saving skills such as turning onto their backs or swimming to the nearest solid object following a sudden submersion.

Water Babies is tremendously proud of the fact that, in the last two years alone, they’ve had five of their tiny clients save themselves from the tragedy of drowning.

Water Babies next term will start from 22nd November. We use local venues in the area. Misterton on Monday, Dunholme on Tuesday, Lincoln on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and Louth on Thursday. For more information on the UK’s leading baby and toddler swim school look at www.waterbabies.co.uk or call 01924 223844. Signpost 21

QUIZ NIGHT!! LAST FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH 26 Signpost GLENTHAM & CAENBY GLENTHAM PARISH COUNCIL NOTE OF MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY 7th OCTOBER 2010 Adjournment period for public questions - Matters raised and discussed were: The dead tree at Barff Meadows has not yet been removed by the County Council. The Clerk will chase this matter up. The area around the entrance to Cherry Tree Farm was considered to be an eyesore that detracts from the village. The Clerk will write, on behalf of the Parish Council, to the administrators of the property asking them to take action to tidy the site up. Highways - Councillors reviewed progress on ten issues relating to highway maintenance, e.g. filling potholes, replacing worn line markings, clearing paths and verges. Actions to try to hurry the repair work along were agreed. The Church clock - The Church clock, which had once again stopped, was repaired on 5 October. Flood Protection - The Parish Council agreed to apply for a grant, under the Parish Council Flood Risk Management Grant Scheme, to buy some high visibility jackets and wind-up torches. Play Area - The Council has now received the report from RoSPA on its annual safety inspection of the Play Area. Councillors discussed the remedial work necessary to address the safety issues highlighted in the report and agreed actions to fix the problems. Councillors will carry out a risk assessment of the Play Area shortly. Amenities - The possibility/desirability of providing a set of goal posts on the green in front of the village hall for the benefit of the local youth was discussed and agreed in principle, subject to costs. The Council also considered a list of jobs that need doing around the village and agreed to apply to the Future Jobs Fund Initiative for a worker to carry them out. Planning - The Council discussed the outcome of planning application (no. 126141) for a lagoon to take run-off from a farm near Spital in the Street. The District Council has refused the application and so Parish Council action will now be confined to keeping a watch on the situation. Barff Meadows - Councillors considered further an expression of interest in buying a small plot of Parish Council land at Barff Meadows. Parish Council records show that the land in question was gifted to the Parish and that the Parish Council has no power to sell it. Minutes of the meeting - Full draft minutes of the meeting are now on the Parish Council Notice Boards on the High Street and outside the Village Hall. Parish Clerk - The Council will need a new Parish Clerk from 1 November 2010. For details, or if you are interested in applying for this position, please contact the present Clerk Andrew Dunn on 01673 878239.

VILLAGE HALL QUIZ SHEETS After our Summer break the monthly quiz sheets are back in circulation and October's quiz is available from the Village Store and Thursday's Coffee Morning at the hall. Now we need the punters! There is a loyal group of aficionados who regularly take part, but new blood is needed to make this VH fundraising item worth while. So why not have a go? The questions are very varied and not too difficult. And the more who enter, the larger the cash prize... which is one third of the takings. I look forward to running out of sheets and needing a second print run! Thanks. Alan

HACKTHORN C. OF E. PRIMARY SCHOOL This month saw the Autumn 'Welly Walks' take place. Key Stage 1 took a relatively local stroll in the countryside close to the village, and some of the younger pupils learnt that the difference between horses and cows had nothing to do with their colour, so the black and white horse which they saw can relax again, safe in the knowledge that no-one will be attempting to milk it! Key Stage 2 were somewhat more intrepid, making their way across the fields almost to Spridlington, and finding a whole host of interesting bits and pieces of natural history. They will be undertaking the same route throughout the seasons, taking notes and photographs so that they can compare the changing landscape over the course of a full year. Talking of full years, the Harvest Festival saw the church laden with all sorts of good things which the children brought in, which have now been distributed to various local organisations for the benefit of others. We have a couple of dates for your diaries this month. On 12th November the Friends of Hackthorn School are holding an Italian Evening (phone school for details), and our Christmas Fair will be on the 26th at 3:30 p.m. If you missed our Autumn Craft afternoon for pre-schoolers, don't worry; we'd be happy to show you around in any case, just give us a ring to arrange an appointment. Contact the school on 01673 860295 to arrange a visit, request a School Brochure or to find out more about the Italian Evening. 34 Signpost

DRIVING TIPS FOR THE WINTER MONTHS Reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces make winter driving particularly hazardous. Good observation is essential so that you can interpret conditions accurately and adjust your speed accordingly. No matter what the other conditions, if you can't see the road clearly, you will need to reduce your speed so that you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear. This is a simple and fundamental principle of defensive driving. In winter, road surfaces are frequently covered by frost and ice, but often not uniformly. Isolated patches and certain gradients will remain icy when the other parts have thawed. The good driver will therefore be on the lookout for these areas. If you drive too fast on a slippery or wet road surface your tyre grip will be substantially reduced and the risk of skidding increased. Remember - it is better to arrive a little later than not at all! Smooth control is another essential element of safer winter driving. You should always aim to plan your action early and brake, steer and change gear as smoothly as possible so as not to affect the grip of your tyres on the road surface. In poor weather especially, better, safer driving is about good preparation, good self-maintenance, good vehicle maintenance, the right knowledge, the right attitude and a thoughtful driving plan. Prepare your vehicle for winter Have your vehicle fully serviced before winter starts and have the anti-freeze tested. Check that your lights are clean and working. Make sure your battery is fully charged. A faulty battery will let you down, probably at the most inconvenient time - so if in doubt change it before it fails! Always keep the windscreen and windows clean and the washer bottle filled with screen wash to the correct concentration. This will prevent the solution from freezing. Carry rescue equipment throughout the winter: In the Boot: Ÿ Tow rope Ÿ Spare bulbs Ÿ Spare fuel Ÿ Shovel Ÿ Hazard warning triangle or similar Ÿ Spare wheel (with tyre at correct pressure and tread) Ÿ High visibility jacket Ÿ Jump leads Ÿ Emergency tyre weld (for temporary 'low speed' repair) Ÿ Wellington boots or similar Signpost 41

In the Car: Ÿ De-icing equipment Ÿ First aid equipment (in good order) Ÿ Working torch Ÿ Car blanket Ÿ Fire extinguisher (fully operative) BEFORE setting off on a journey during wintry conditions: Make sure you know and understand the hazards and risks of all types of weather conditions, especially ice, snow and fog - before you venture out. Short-term weather forecasts are now very accurate, so listen to local/national weather broadcasts and to travel information bulletins on the radio. If conditions are very bad, avoid making your journey unless it is absolutely necessary. Clear your windows and mirrors completely of snow and ice before you set off. (Make sure the heater is blowing warm air before setting off - it will keep your windscreen clear).

WELTON PATIENT DOCTORS ASSOCIATION First of all a huge 'Thank you' to everyone who came along to support our Autumn Fayre on 9th October, to everyone who helped on the day and to all the local businesses who kindly donated raffle prizes. A grand total of £1302.70 made all the hard work worthwhile. Everyone is invited to our next event, the AGM, to be held on Thursday 4th November at 7.30 p.m. at the Health Centre. Earlier in the year we applied for, and were awarded, funding from the RAF Waddington Station Charities Committee. A representative from RAF Waddington will be present to hand over a light weight wheelchair, purchased with the funding, to be used by PDA drivers when transporting patients to hospital. This presentation will be followed by the election of the PDA Committee Members and Officers. The doctors from the surgery will then take part in a question and answer session on the subject of 'Changes in general practice over the years'. Farnham Maltings Miracle on 34th Street Saturday 4th December 2010 4:30 p.m. (Doors open at 4:00 p.m.)

Welcome to New York! Welcome to wintertime 1947! Welcome to Miracle on 34th Street! A new play for the whole community that promises to warm the coldest of places through long winter nights. Valentine Davies' classic holiday tale has been described by many as a twentieth century Christmas Carol, with its warm, funny story of an old man who insists that he actually is Santa Claus. Using their own, inimitable style Farnham Maltings has transformed everyone's favourite Christmas story into two hours of magical, rough edged theatre complete with Santa's grotto, thanksgiving parade and newly fallen snow… This unique adaptation is suitable for anyone aged 6yrs+, adults and young people alike

Tickets: Full £8.00 - Concession £6.00 - Family £25 (2adults + 2 children) Please contact the box office on 01522 731852 / 07887 755227 to book tickets or contact a member of the Ingham and Cammeringham Village Hall committee. Signpost 43

WELTON HEALTH CENTRE The 'flu campaign is well underway but if you are in the " at risk" group of patients and have not yet had a vaccination please make an appointment. We are obliged to write to all patients in these groups who do not attend for such vaccinations so, if you have decided against this, it would also be helpful if you could advise us so that we may amend our records accordingly. We are delighted to announce that Dr Jenny Glennon will be joining us as part of the GP Registrar Scheme at the end of October to complete her GP training programme. NHS Lincolnshire is working with groups of practices and ULHT (United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust) to improve the planning and care of elderly patients in the area. Part of this process involves completing an annual assessment of each patient over the age of seventy five. Some patients may be asked to complete a self assessment form. The aim of the project is to ensure that those in need of support remain in their usual place of residence for as long as possible and have appropriate assistance to do so, and to prevent patients spending time in hospital when community care would be more beneficial. The information collected will assist practices to proactively manage those patients most at risk of hospitalisation or requiring additional input. Dispensary staff would like to remind patients that if early requests for repeat prescriptions are made it would be helpful to advise us of the reason ( e.g. holiday ) when ordering.
