  • Grouplove Big Mess Turns out That a Big Mess Can Actually Be a Good
Grouplove Big Mess Turns out that a big mess can actually be a good thing. In the case of Grouplove’s third studio album, Big Mess refers not only to a lyric in the buoyant lead single “Welcome To Your Life,” but also to the situation in which they found themselves when they got off the road following 2013’s Spreading Rumours. For the first time since releasing their breakthrough 2011 debut, Never Trust A Happy Song, Grouplove were back in Los Angeles indefinitely, with a lot of catching up to do. “We got off tour and realized we had been completely neglecting normal life,” says singer and keyboard player Hannah Hooper. “We were out of touch with friends and family, our house looked like we were hoarders -- it was like an explosion of so much at once.” In the midst of it all, Hooper and Grouplove singer/guitarist Christian Zucconi, who have been a couple since the band’s inception, found out they were going to have a baby. Like the true pair of artists they are, Zucconi and Hooper viewed the chaos as an opportunity to be creative. “We felt so out of control. Instead of trying to deal with the mess, we just started writing,” Hooper explains. “We had so many songs come out of that, and Big Mess is a collection of our favorites.” The album’s opening track, “Welcome To Your Life,” was one of close to forty songs that began in that messy moment. Hooper recorded the hook -- “we’re back in business, you’re such a big mess, and I love you” -- on her laptop, but the rest of the tune took awhile to come into focus.

  • Producer, Engineer, Mixer Phil Ek, Producer of Artists
Rebekah Ratlif 9/12/2011 Demo Production Phil Ek: Producer, Engineer, Mixer Phil Ek, producer of artists such as The Shins, Modest Mouse, Fleet Foxes, and Band of Horses, prides himself on filling three roles of the music production process: producer, engineer, and mixer. It’s fair to say that he is successful in all three areas. In the nineties Ek moved to Seattle after graduating high school and started in the clubs of Seattle where he worked as an audio engineer. After working for a year and a half, he moved on to recording small demos for anyone that came to him. He would record three song demos on cassette so the artists could try to get gigs in clubs and venues. Ek then attended the Art Institute of Seattle to study recording. During this time he met John Endino, producer of Nirvana, and ended up assisting him in his studios. During his time with Endino and recording demos at Sub Pop records he met members of the band Built to Spill. Ek, creating a good relationship with the band, was asked to record their record “There’s Nothing Wrong with Love” which went on to reach #24 on Pitchfork’s Top 100 albums of the 1990s. Ever since recording that album, Ek has been unstoppable, recording several other Built to Spill records, two number one albums in the US, and two in the US top 40. The Role of the Producer The idea of what a producer actually does could be diferent for many people, depending on their perspective in or outside of the music industry.

Whatever the reason, students flocking to the clinic to get the flu shots caused the scheduled five-hour clinic to run out of vaccinations in an hour and a half. “There was a huge line of students before I got there, which was before 9 a.m.,” said Arlynn Hurtado, a third semester nursing student who gave injections at the clinic. “The line was pretty long, I’d say at least 30 to 40 students. So, we had to be pretty quick.” Hurtado was one of about 15 to 20 nursing students who vol- unteered to help at the flu shot clinic. Fresno State’s nurs- ing department and Student Health Center organized the event. The on-campus clinic took place at the Pavilion, locat- ed on the first floor of the University Student Union. It was scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. but opera- tions were cut short less than two hours later. “We were not planning to give that many. • Villages Upon the Horizon (EP)
Villages Upon the Horizon (EP) When the four members of Villages established the band in 2016, it was with the goal of writing original songs in the spirit of the traditional music of their home region, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. But from that simple foundation, the sound of Villages has consistently expanded into what is now a dazzling combination of indie folk and experimental pop, with dashes of sun-bleached psychedelia added for good measure. The band’s new EP Upon the Horizon - a taste of their next full-length album due in 2021 - is their most dynamic and exploratory work yet, recorded at New Scotland Yard studio in Dartmouth, just after Nova Scotia lifted social distancing rules in July 2020. But what makes Upon the Horizon stand apart from Villages’ past efforts is its mix done by American indie rock legend Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, The Shins, Father John Misty, Band of Horses). For Matt Ellis, Travis Ellis, Jon Pearo and Archie Rankin, it was not only an honour to work with one of their heroes, but a validation of their distinctive musical approach. Travis Ellis explains, “Back before we mixed our first record, I threw a bit of a Hail Mary and reached out to Phil to gauge his interest. He was into it but the timing just didn’t work out then. Thankfully everything came together this time around, and it was a real treat to work with Phil. He did a great job and definitely took the songs to another level.” That was exactly what the members of Villages were after, since the songs as written aimed to transcend the sense of isolation and dread that accompanied pandemic restrictions.

  • Manchester Orchestra - HOPE
Manchester Orchestra - HOPE Searching for the sonic direction of what would become their fourth full-length album, the hard-hitting COPE, earlier this year; Manchester Orchestra discovered something pretty amazing. The unapologetically heavy anthems seemed to work just as well (or even better) when stripped to their essence. “We were noticing that all the beautiful, slow stuff was working with all the really loud and fast stuff,” said lead vocalist, Andy Hull. “The seed was planted to go back and create a full circle of an album.” So when Hull went into SiriusXM’s Alt-Nation studios and recorded a stripped- down version of “Top Notch” on the eve of releasing COPE this past April, it was with a measured degree of intent. The quiet presentation and simple arrangement forced the song’s warm lyric and beautiful melody to the fore, which actually made the track itself sound bigger. The fan reaction to the new version of “Top Notch” was powerful and instant (as was the great support from SiriusXM), further reinforcing the band’s desire to reshape these songs in a new and different way. Over the summer of 2014, in the same studio where they originally forged COPE; the band re-imagined the songs with a renewed sense of purpose and fresh perspective. Using Fender Rhodes, piano, vocal re- arrangements and strings, Manchester Orchestra, with an assist from illustrious sound mixer Phil Ek (Built To Spill, Beach House, Fleet Foxes), transformed COPE’s eleven tracks into something completely new and mesmerizing: HOPE. “We were really proud of the stuff we were recording but Phil did an amazing job on the mixes,” Andy notes.
