Amanda Huron Interviewed by John Davis January 18, 2019 Washington, D.C
Amanda Huron Interview Amanda Huron Interviewed by John Davis January 18, 2019 Washington, D.C. 0:00:00 to 0:44:55 ________________________________________________________________________ 0:00:00 Davis: Today is January 18th, 2019. My name is John Davis. I'm the performing arts metadata archivist at the University of Maryland. Today I'm speaking with Amanda Huron, co-creator of Brickthrower. Also the Movement Empowerment Solidarity Through Art or MESA zines, during your years in D.C. Am I missing anything zine-wise from the D.C. years? Huron: Not from the D.C. years. I did a zine when I was living in Minnesota, and then I did the final issue of it when I had moved back to D.C. And that was called Splatterspleen. Issue number five, I did when I was here. But the rest of it was Minnesota-based. And then what else? Yeah, no, that’s it for D.C. Davis You were mentioning Minnesota. Huron: Yeah. Davis: So let’s talk about getting into punk in the first place, and what interested you in punk. How did you get into it? Huron: I got into punk in high school here in D.C. I think in 11th grade was when I first heard about Fugazi, so that would have been ’88 or ’89. And a friend of mine—actually, let’s see—10th grade, a friend of mine gave me a tape of the first Fugazi—13 Songs. And the first time I saw them was at All Souls Church, a show with Jawbox and Shudder to Think. -

Mike’s reason for this design is so that the stick has a slightly added front weight for a solid, consistent “throw” and transient sound. With the extra length, you can adjust how much front weight you’re implementing by slightly moving your fulcrum .580" point up or down on the stick. You’ll also get a fat sounding rimshot crack from the added front weighted taper. Grouplove Big Mess Turns out That a Big Mess Can Actually Be a Good
Grouplove Big Mess Turns out that a big mess can actually be a good thing. In the case of Grouplove’s third studio album, Big Mess refers not only to a lyric in the buoyant lead single “Welcome To Your Life,” but also to the situation in which they found themselves when they got off the road following 2013’s Spreading Rumours. For the first time since releasing their breakthrough 2011 debut, Never Trust A Happy Song, Grouplove were back in Los Angeles indefinitely, with a lot of catching up to do. “We got off tour and realized we had been completely neglecting normal life,” says singer and keyboard player Hannah Hooper. “We were out of touch with friends and family, our house looked like we were hoarders -- it was like an explosion of so much at once.” In the midst of it all, Hooper and Grouplove singer/guitarist Christian Zucconi, who have been a couple since the band’s inception, found out they were going to have a baby. Like the true pair of artists they are, Zucconi and Hooper viewed the chaos as an opportunity to be creative. “We felt so out of control. Instead of trying to deal with the mess, we just started writing,” Hooper explains. “We had so many songs come out of that, and Big Mess is a collection of our favorites.” The album’s opening track, “Welcome To Your Life,” was one of close to forty songs that began in that messy moment. Hooper recorded the hook -- “we’re back in business, you’re such a big mess, and I love you” -- on her laptop, but the rest of the tune took awhile to come into focus. -
Producer, Engineer, Mixer Phil Ek, Producer of Artists
Rebekah Ratlif 9/12/2011 Demo Production Phil Ek: Producer, Engineer, Mixer Phil Ek, producer of artists such as The Shins, Modest Mouse, Fleet Foxes, and Band of Horses, prides himself on filling three roles of the music production process: producer, engineer, and mixer. It’s fair to say that he is successful in all three areas. In the nineties Ek moved to Seattle after graduating high school and started in the clubs of Seattle where he worked as an audio engineer. After working for a year and a half, he moved on to recording small demos for anyone that came to him. He would record three song demos on cassette so the artists could try to get gigs in clubs and venues. Ek then attended the Art Institute of Seattle to study recording. During this time he met John Endino, producer of Nirvana, and ended up assisting him in his studios. During his time with Endino and recording demos at Sub Pop records he met members of the band Built to Spill. Ek, creating a good relationship with the band, was asked to record their record “There’s Nothing Wrong with Love” which went on to reach #24 on Pitchfork’s Top 100 albums of the 1990s. Ever since recording that album, Ek has been unstoppable, recording several other Built to Spill records, two number one albums in the US, and two in the US top 40. The Role of the Producer The idea of what a producer actually does could be diferent for many people, depending on their perspective in or outside of the music industry. -

Razorcake Issue
PO Box 42129, Los Angeles, CA 90042 #17 www.razorcake.com It’s strange the things you learn about yourself when you travel, I took my second trip to go to the wedding of an old friend, andI the last two trips I took taught me a lot about why I spend so Tommy. Tommy and I have been hanging out together since we much time working on this toilet topper that you’re reading right were about four years old, and we’ve been listening to punk rock now. together since before a lot of Razorcake readers were born. Tommy The first trip was the Perpetual Motion Roadshow, an came to pick me up from jail when I got arrested for being a smart independent writers touring circuit that took me through seven ass. I dragged the best man out of Tommy’s wedding after the best cities in eight days. One of those cities was Cleveland. While I was man dropped his pants at the bar. Friendships like this don’t come there, I scammed my way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. See, along every day. they let touring bands in for free, and I knew this, so I masqueraded Before the wedding, we had the obligatory bachelor party, as the drummer for the all-girl Canadian punk band Sophomore which led to the obligatory visit to the strip bar, which led to the Level Psychology. My facial hair didn’t give me away. Nor did my obligatory bachelor on stage, drunk and dancing with strippers. -
