Register of the Paul A. Gordon Collection Collection 281 Center for Adventist Research James White Library Andrews University Berrien Springs, MI 49014-1440 March 2010 Processed by: Alexander Fey Paul A. Gordon Collection Collection 281 Scope and Content Paul Alfred Gordon was born in 1930 and passed away on June 25, 2009 in Oregon, aged 79. He went to school at Auburn Academy, Washington getting his diploma on May 23, 1948. After studying at Walla Walla Collage he began his work as an SDA pastor in Washington state and Oregon and held the position of a Bible teacher at Milo and Upper Columbia Academy. Gordon became part of the Ellen G. White statff Estate where he worked in different positions for more than 30 years. Later in his life, by succeeding Robert Olson, Paul Gordon became the director of the Ellen G. White Estate in 1990. He held this position until his retirement in 1995. In working for the White Estate he traveled more than 120 countries. He was one of the co-founders of the Adventist Heritage Ministry in 1981 and arranged the purchase of the William Miller home (1984). Gordon authored several books, numerous articles for Adventist periodicals and in addition to that he was the primary compiler of four devotional books. He also made contributions to Sabbath School lessons and the f orthcoming Ellen G. White Encyclopedia. His wife Donna and his four children survive him. This collection, consisting of 14 boxes, mainly is about Ellen White and Advent history. This is the material from his file drawers in the Ellen White Estate. ? It contains also, but only few, personal items related to Gordon. The first third of the collection is about personal items, Gordon’s writings, public speaking, including teaching and clippings he collected. In this part one can find manuscripts of some of Gordon’s books and materials he used for them. There is also a lot of periodical issues available where articles of his have been published. The section “Projects” contains interesting works on Ellen White and the pioneers. “Public Speaking” is about different speaking occasions with an emphasis on preaching and presenting, oftentimes, especially when working at the Ellen G. White Estate, about Ellen White related topics. In this part occasionally papers show up, which have been listed. The biggest part of the collection, which is the ABC paper collection and the topical material collection, is a collection of materials, papers and notes regarding all kinds of issues and persons related to Ellen White. This is a real treasure chest. Gordon himself wrote lots of unpublished papers which can be found throughout the collection. At the end of the collections there are folders on items Gordon used to display. These are also about Adventist history and Ellen White. The collection contained original materials from the 19th century, such as letters from Charles and J. N. Andrews and documents signed by William Miller and Paulinus Millard and an original copy of an Ellen White manuscript from 1907 (see section “Items Removed or Transferred”) . Arrangement During the processing quite a bit of rearrangement was necessary. General categories could be recognized but they were arranged in a more logical and easier accessible way as below. ABC papers have were arranged in alphabetical topical order within the folders. Topical folders have been brought in alphabetical order. Some boxes contained ring binders, while other boxes had piles of paper which had to be brought in order. Display items in general were set in an order. Originally they were all mixed up in about nine folders. The major arrangement of the collection looks like this: Personal Documents Writings by Paul Gordon Projects by Paul Gordon Public Speaking by Paul Gordon Clippings ABC Paper Collection Topical Material Collections Display Items Miscellaneous Items Removed Provenance donated this collection to the Andrews University Center for Adventist Research in .
