Simmons, Examination Committee Chair Professor o f Anthropology University o f Nevada, Las Vegas North American archaeologists researching Paleoindian adaptations have suggested that Paleoindians, represented by Clovis, Folsom, and Plano traditions, were highly mobile foragers. By contrast, “ Paleoarchaic” hunter-gatherers o f the Great Basin are thought to have become increasingly sedentary through time, specially adapted and tethered to diverse lacustrine/marsh resources. My research project aims to understand human adaptation during the early Holocene through characterization o f the lithic assemblages Aom two stemmed point sites in western Nevada, the Sadmat and Coleman sites. These sites are located in the Lahontan basin and possess data sets unique and compelling in addressing the research objectives proposed in this study. Further, this thesis examines the technological organization and provisioning strategies represented at these sites in order to address the relative degrees of mobility of early Holocene peoples in the western Great Basin.     The Late Neolithic colonization of the Eastern Badia of Jordan 1 Gary Rollefson1, Yorke Rowan2 and Alexander Wasse Pioneering research by Betts and by Garrard in the eastern steppe and desert of Jordan demonstrated the presence of Late Neolithic (c. 7000–5000 cal BC) pastoral exploitation of this currently arid/hyper-arid region, but the scale of Late Neolithic presence in the area was difficult to assess from the reports of their surveys and excavations. Recent investigations by the Eastern Badia Archaeological Project at Wisad Pools and the Wadi al-Qattafi in the Black Desert have shown that conditions during the latter half of the 7th millennium and into the 6th, permitted substantial numbers of pastoralists to occupy substantial dwellings recurrently, in virtual village settings, for considerable amounts of time on a seasonal basis, relying heavily on the hunting of wild animals and perhaps practising opportunistic agriculture in addition to herding caprines.     ekkehart malotkI The Road to Iconicity in the Pa- leoart of the American West Introduction Throughout the world, all paleoart traditions considered to be the earliest uniformly display a remarkable noniconicity, whether they occur as port- able objects or in the context of rock art. This uniformity is believed to be attributable not to cultural difusion but to an evolved, predisposing neuro- biology shared by all human beings. This panglobal similarity of the most basic phosphene-like motif repertoires also holds for the Pleistocene-Hol- ocene transition period in the American West. From Canada to Northwest Mexico and from Texas to the Paciic Coast, canyon walls, boulder faces and rock shelters served as canvases for the arriving Paleoamericans and their descendants. Their non-igurative, geocentric marking systems, summar- ily labeled here Western Archaic Tradition (Fig. 1), lasted for thousands of years until in very limited areas full-blown iconicity in the form of distinct biocentric styles set in around the Middle Holocene (Fig. 2). Many regions, however, remained committed to the graphic Western Archaic Tradition mode until A. D. 600 or later or never developed representational motifs. Biographical History Harold Atwood Widdison was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 10, 1935 to Harold Edward and Margaret Lavona (née Atwood) Widdison. His only sibling, sister Joan Lavona, was born in 1940. The family moved to Helena, Montana when Widdison was 12, where he graduated from high school in 1953. He then served a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1956 Widdison entered Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, graduating with a BS in sociology in 1959 and an MS in business in 1961. He was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington DC before returning to graduate school, earning his PhD in medical sociology and statistics from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1970. Dr. Widdison was a faculty member in the Sociology Department at Northern Arizona University from 1972 until his retirement in 2003. His research foci included research methods, medical sociology, complex organization, and death and dying. His interest in the latter led him to develop one of the first courses on death, grief, and bereavement, and helped establish such courses in the field on a national scale.

    The Arab Bedouin indigenous people of the Negev/Nagab – A Short Background In 1948, on the eve of the establishment of the State of Israel, about 65,000 to 100,000 Arab Bedouin lived in the Negev/Naqab region, currently the southern part of Israel. Following the 1948 war, the state began an ongoing process of eviction of the Arab Bedouin from their dwellings. At the end of the '48 war, only 11,000 Arab Bedouin people remained in the Negev/Naqab, most of the community fled or was expelled to Jordan and Egypt, the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula. During the early 1950s and until 1966, the State of Israel concentrated the Arab Bedouin people in a under military administration. In this (سياج) ’closed zone known by the name ‘al-Siyāj period, entire villages were displaced from their locations in the western and northern Negev/Naqab and were transferred to the Siyāj area. Under the Planning and Construction Law, legislated in 1965, most of the lands in the Siyāj area were zoned as agricultural land whereby ensuring that any construction of housing would be deemed illegal, including all those houses already built which were subsequently labeled “illegal”. Thus, with a single sweeping political decision, the State of Israel transformed almost the entire Arab Bedouin collective into a population of whereas the Arab Bedouins’ only crime was exercising their basic ,״lawbreakers״ human right for adequate housing. In addition, the state of Israel denies any Arab Bedouin ownership over lands in the Negev/Naqab. It does not recognize the indigenous Arab Bedouin law or any other proof of Bedouin ownership over lands.

    A Brief History of the Negev Bedouin The changes of the twentieth century have brought about the destruction of many indigenous communities, as is happening today to the Bedouin community in the Israeli Negev. Today in the southern Negev desert of Israel there exist 45 Bedouin villages with a combined population of more than 70,000 people, all citizens of the state of Israel. They live in communities that appear on no official maps, and receive no basic and essential services from the Israeli government, such as electricity, water, sewage, paved roads, and inadequate medical services. These 45 villages are referred to as unrecognized. The Bedouin people are the indigenous inhabitants of the Negev desert, arriving in waves from the Arabian Peninsula over the last hundreds and thousands of years. Since that time, the Bedouin population has been residing in the region in semi-nomadic communities, depending primarily on their livestock as a means of survival, and developing a culture distinct from other Palestinian communities in the North. One can divide modern Bedouin history into four distinct periods, and with each period came erosion of this autonomy and land rights, ultimately culminating in the situation we have today. They are, respectively, the Ottoman period, the British mandatory period, Israeli rule from 1948-1966, and Israeli rule from 1966 to the present. During the later part of the Ottoman period, many of the Bedouin began cultivating land, and consequently a private land ownership system was established and regulated by the Bedouin courts. When the Ottoman Land Law (1858) came into effect and required all subjects to register their land and pay the necessary taxes on it, many Bedouin ignored the law.

B2, Allée Geoffroy St-Hilaire CS 50023, 33615 Pessac cedex, France E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] Unshaped Bone Tools from Denisova Cave, Altai This study describes a part of the Paleolithic bone industry of Denisova Cave—the site that is key for understanding a complex interaction between various groups of early humans and the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. The Initial Upper Paleolithic layers of the cave yielded fossil remains of Denisovans, and the earliest ornaments and bone tools in North and Central Asia. The principal objective of this study is to analyze unshaped bone tools from the Late Middle and Initial Upper Paleolithic from the East Chamber of the cave. Among more than 10 thousand bone fragments, subdivided into three groups in terms of taphonomic, technical, and utilization traces, 51 specimens were selected for study. On the basis of location of use-wear traces that varied according to function, unshaped bone tools such as retouchers, awls, intermediate tools, and knives were revealed for the fi rst time in Denisova Cave. The results of the morphological and use-wear analysis suggest that those tools were used for processing organic materials such as leather, plant fi bers, and wood.
