Olympique Lyonnais v PSV MATCH PRESS KIT Gerland, Lyon Wednesday, 8 March 2006 - 20:45 CET First knockout round - Matchday 8

Olympique Lyonnais believe strongly in their chances of reaching the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after ©s second-half free-kick sealed a 1-0 victory against PSV Eindhoven in the .

Govou out ·The winner was a triumph for one Brazilian at the expense of another, Juninho©s compatriot being deceived by the swerving drive. However, joy for the French champions was tempered by the knowledge that they will be without striker for the home leg after he was dismissed for a second yellow card.

Some revenge · The win gave Gérard Houllier©s team a measure of revenge for their defeat by PSV in a thrilling UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie 12 months ago. The Dutch side prevailed on penalties ± and advanced to the semi-finals where AC Milan defeated them on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate draw - with Lyon©s and missing from the spot to enable PSV to seal a 4-2 win. It was the first occasion a knockout game in the competition - other than the final - had gone to a shoot-out.

· Both games had finished 1-1 with Lyon ahead on each occasion before PSV pegged them back. in the Stade Gerland and two weeks later, had tipped the odds in the French side©s favour but their opponents showed their fighting qualities on each occasion as and Alex fired second-half equalisers.

Solid at home · Lyon are not in the habit of slipping up at home. Since AFC Ajax beat them 2-0 in October 2002 they have staged 13 home games in the UEFA Champions League, winning nine and drawing four.

· Victories in all their games in the Stade Gerland in this campaign helped Lyon edge out Real Madrid CF to finish top of Group F, dropping just two points in six games. In their sixth UEFA Champions League campaign, Lyon began with a memorable 3-0 home success against the Spanish side and drew 1-1 in the Spanish capital. Norwegian international John Carew scored in both those games and has a total of four goals, the same mark as Juninho after his Eindhoven strike.

Going Dutch · The French team have welcomed Dutch opposition ± three different sides - on three previous occasions in the UEFA Champions League. A win against SC Heerenveen and a defeat by AFC Ajax preceded the draw last season with PSV.

PSV leave it late · To reach this stage in their tenth UEFA Champions League campaign, ©s team had to win their final game in Group E and a 2-0 victory against Fenerbahçe SK earned them second place behind AC Milan.

Scoreless run · The Dutch side©s goal in Lyon in the quarter-final tie 12 months ago was their last away from home in the competition. Since then they have had four games on the road, losing three and drawing one and in none of them were they able to find the net.

Unbeaten in France · PSV are unbeaten on their last five visits to France which includes four draws and a win at AS Monaco FC in last season©s first knockout round though that is their solitary success in 12 fixtures. They took a long time making their mark in that country, failing to score a goal in their first four attempts.

Success at this stage · The first knockout round has proved fertile territory for both sides ± albeit that for the Dutch champions this is only the second time they have reached this stage. Last season PSV put paid to Monaco 3-0 overall, winning 1-0 at home with Alex on target while the 2-0 away win came courtesy of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and DaMarcus Beasley.

· At the same time, Lyon defeated Werder Bremen 10-2 on aggregate, posting a 3-0 success in Germany before winning 7-2 at home. Sylvain Wiltord©s hat-trick in that game added to his goal in the away leg. At the same stage in the previous season Lyon had enjoyed matching 1-0 wins against de Fútbol before bowing out to eventual winners FC Porto.

Knockout format · Clubs play two matches against each other on a home and away basis, with the team scoring the greater aggregate of goals qualifying for the next round. In the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more goals away qualifies. If this proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, the away goals count double (ie. the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks.

Gérard Houllier The speed at which Gérard Houllier returned to the Liverpool FC training ground following a heart operation provided proof, if ever it was needed, that football is the Frenchman©s lifeblood.

An English teacher who never played the game professionally, Houllier established himself as a coach to be reckoned with during a six-year stay at lowly US Noeux-les-Mines, famously masterminding a French Cup defeat of FC Nantes Atlantique. He moved on to RC Lens (1982-85) and Paris Saint-Germain FC (1985-88) where he won the French title in 1986. A deep thinker, Houllier assisted France coach Michel Platini for almost four years before taking the top job himself following the 1992 UEFA European Championship.

Life at the helm of the good ship France did not quite go to plan as Les Bleus failed to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup finals, but following a rewarding stint as technical director for the French Football Federation, Houllier could not resist the lure of the club game when Liverpool came calling in 1998. He arrived at Anfield initially as joint manager alongside Roy Evans, but took sole charge that November. He led the Reds to a treble of UEFA Cup, FA Cup and English League Cup, followed by the UEFA Super Cup, in 2001 before making way for Rafael Benítez in summer 2004. Houllier returned to France and the following May was offered another plum role as coach of perennial champions Olympique Lyonnais.

Guus Hiddink The deep-thinking Guus Hiddink was one of the most coveted names in European coaching after transforming co-hosts the Korean Republic into genuine FIFA World Cup contenders in 2002.That summer he returned to his spiritual home, PSV Eindhoven, and proved that the Midas touch had not deserted him by winning the title in his first season back at the Philips Stadion, adding a Dutch double in 2005 and running AC Milan all the way in an enthralling UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Whereas his playing career was undistinguished, encompassing spells at SC Varsseveld, , PSV, NEC Nijmegen, Washington Diplomats and San Jose Earthquakes, he was soon winning trophies as a coach after joining the PSV set-up under and Hans Kraay. Hiddink took sole charge in March 1987 and guided the club to three Dutch championships, but it was PSV©s defeat of SL Benfica in the 1988 European Champion Clubs© Cup final which propelled him to the upper echelons of the continent©s coaching élite.

Spells at some of Europe©s leading clubs - Fenerbahçe SK, Valcencia CF, Real Madrid CF and Real Betis Balompié - followed, as well as a stint in charge of the Dutch national team. Hiddink led the Netherlands to the semi-finals of the 1998 World Cup before his side were beaten on penalties by Brazil. Aged 58, he made a return to international football in July 2005 when agreeing to take charge of Australia, a position he would combine with his duties in Eindhoven.

Referee

Name Nat. DoB UCL UEFA Michael Riley ENG 17.12.1964 12 27

Mike Riley is a straight-talking Yorkshireman who likes to keep a tight rein on his matches - but what do you expect from a man who works as a finance director by profession?

Born on 17 December 1964, Riley took charge of his first English FA Premiership game in 1996 before being awarded his FIFA badge in 1999. Only four years ago, Riley was a member of the UEFA European Under-18 Championship referees© team but since enjoyed an elevated role, living out his lifelong dream by taking charge of two group games at UEFA EURO 2004™ as well as refereeing games in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup.

In September 2005 he was awarded the whistle for the UEFA Champions League game between AC Milan and Fenerbahçe SK and impressed as the middle man when Lithuania and Belgium met in October. Back in England, Riley has established himself in the top band of officials over the past five years, counting the 2002 FA Cup final between Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC at Cardiff©s Millennium Stadium as one of the highlights of his refereeing career.

The Rotherham-based official, who regards George Courtney as his refereeing icon, was also rewarded for some impressive displays in the Premiership with the 2004 English League Cup final between Bolton Wanderers FC and Middlesbrough FC.

Domestic news

Olympique Lyonnais go into their return fixture against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday confident that they can hold on to a precarious 1-0 lead. The French side earned a comfortable victory on Saturday, but lost heavily the previous week to afford some hope to their Dutch visitors, who have taken their winning streak to nine games since the first leg at the Philips Stadion on 21 February.

AC Ajaccio 1-3 Olympique Lyonnais Lyon bounced back from last weekend©s shock 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Stade Rennais FC as they overpowered Ajaccio in Ligue 1. A hat-trick from dealt the French champions what president Jean-Michel Aulas described as "our worst setback for five years", but a repeat never looked likely at the Stade François-Coty. Juninho Pernambucano broke the deadlock with a stunning 38-metre free-kick just after the hour and Fred doubled the lead with 13 minutes remaining.Yet another Brazilian, Lucas, reduced the deficit before Karim Benzema secured the points late on.

"It was a nice game between two nice teams," said coach Gérard Houllier. "We won our last game before the European tie which makes me feel relieved. Whenever we have won the preparation game we have gone on to win in Europe. Yet again Juninho unlocked the game." Left-back Jérémy Berthod is expected to be out of action for two weeks, however, having been forced off by a hamstring injury against Ajaccio while Mahamadou Diarra is doubtful to face after picking up a back injury in the warm-up before Saturday©s match. Both players could join Claudio Caçapa (thigh), Anthony Réveillère (hamstring) and Sylvain Monsoreau (thigh) on the sidelines. Sidney Govou is suspended having been sent off in the first leg but striker John Carew and midfielder Tiago should be fit after being rested at Ajaccio.

PSV Eindhoven 4-1 SC Heerenveen Guus Hiddink©s side continued their march towards retaining their Eredivisie title on Saturday by building on last week©s important 2-1 win at AZ Alkmaar with a convincing home victory. Arouna Koné (2), Phillip Cocu and Alex were all on target at the Philips Stadion as the Dutch champions made it nine consecutive league wins, but the points came at a cost as right-back Michael Reiziger (hand) had to be substituted early on and his replacement Michael Lamey was also forced off after the interval by a calf injury. One positive was that Eric Addo returned having recovered from the knee injury that forced his substitution against AZ.

With André Ooijer already out with a broken toe sustained in the first leg against Lyon, the PSV coach now has a serious selection headache for the return in France. He was content to draw on the positives, saying: "We started very strongly and could have been 2-0 up inside 20 minutes. That can make things difficult, but we still went into the break with a good lead and although we conceded a careless goal, Alex©s fantastic strike got us back on track."

General competition information

UEFA©s most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs© Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

· Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

· Deadlines: UEFA Champions League press kits are provided to media by uefa.com. For every UEFA Champions League match, two press kits are issued in English: Sunday at 22:00CET with a match preview update on Monday at 22:00CET for Tuesday©s matches. For Wednesday©s matches, the press kit is issued on Monday at 22:00CET with the match preview update version published on Tuesday at 22:00CET. Multilingual versions of press kits, determined on a match-by-match basis, are also issued with similar deadlines.

UEFA information

A new UEFA Champions League trophy will make its first public appearance at the traditional handover ceremony in Paris on Friday.

The new trophy ± engraved with the names of the 50 previous winners ± will be presented by Real Madrid CF©s Francisco ©Paco© Gento, a member of the first team to lift the European Champion Clubs© Cup. Madrid©s 4-3 victory over Champagne - also in Paris, at the Parc des Princes, in 1956 - was the first of the Spanish side©s nine triumphs, with Gento featuring in six. The ceremony will take place from 12.00CET in the Salle des Fêtes at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris.

Gento will be joined on stage by Steven Gerrard, the last captain to claim the old trophy after Liverpool FC©s thrilling success against AC Milan last season. The silverware in Liverpool©s permanent possession was, fittingly, the fifth model to be cast in the competition©s history. The original was awarded to Real Madrid CF following their sixth continental conquest in 1966. Other multiple-winners Milan (six), FC Bayern München and AFC Ajax (both four) own the other trophies.

Gerrard and Gento, embracing the competition©s half-century, will then hand the new cup to UEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson, who will in turn give it to the Lord Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, for safekeeping and public display until the final at the Stade de France on 17 May - maintaining a tradition dating back to the 1997 showpiece in Munich.

After the ceremony, the draws for the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be made in the host city of a final for the first time. No teams will be seeded, and sides from the same country may play each other. Mr Olsson will be assisted by this year©s UEFA Champions League final ambassador, Laurent Blanc, who was in the France team that lifted the 1998 FIFA World Cup at the Stade de France and triumphed at UEFA EURO 2000™.
