I have confined this project to Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics (EN) and Metaphysics, with a background discussion of Plato’s Symposium and Phaedrus. I will argue for the following claims. First, Plato’s Symposium poses a dilemma with respect to the object and nature of e[rwV. The dilemma is that the objects of e[rwV must be either particular individuals or the Beautiful itself. Second, Plato’s Phaedrus may be seen as Plato’s attempt to solve the dilemma by giving a synthesis: e[rwV is a virtuous maniva and should be directed to particular individuals en route to the Beautiful. -
Pleonexia, Parasitic Greed, and Decline in Greek Thought from Thucydides to Polybius
ABSTRACT Title of Document: HOW THINGS FALL APART: PLEONEXIA, PARASITIC GREED, AND DECLINE IN GREEK THOUGHT FROM THUCYDIDES TO POLYBIUS William D. Burghart, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Directed By: Professor Arthur M. Eckstein, Department of History This dissertation examines how Greek authors from the fifth to the second century BCE employed the concept of pleonexia to explain why cities lost power on the international stage and why they lost internal cohesion. First, it argues that Greek authors understood pleonexia to mean “the desire for more at the expense of another” as opposed simply “greed” as most modern authors translate it. Second, it contends that Greeks authors deployed the concept of pleonexia to describe situations that modern authors would describe as societal collapse—defined as the reduction of societal complexity, which can be measured through either the loss of material or immaterial means, e.g., land, wealth, political power, influence over others, political stability, or political autonomy. Greek authors used the language of pleonexia to characterize the motivation of an entity, either an individual within a community or a city or state, to act in a way that empowered the entity by taking or somehow depriving another similar entity of wealth, land, or power. In a city, pleonexia manifested as an individual seeking to gain power through discrediting, prosecuting, or eliminating rivals. In international affairs, it materialized as attempts of a power to gain more territory or influence over others. Acting on such an impulse led to conflict within cities and in the international arena. The inevitable result of such conflict was the pleonexic power losing more than it had had before. -

This is the companion volume to Gregory Vlastos' highly acclaimed work Socrates: Ironist and Moral Philosopher. Four ground-breaking papers which laid the basis for his understanding of Socrates are collected here, in revised form: they examine Socrates' elenctic method of investigative argument, his disavowal of knowledge, his concern for definition, and the complica- tions of his relationship with the Athenian democracy. The fifth chapter is a new and provocative discussion of Socrates' arguments in the Protagoras and Laches. The epilogue "Socrates and Vietnam" suggests that Socrates was not, as Plato claimed, the most just man of his time. The papers have been prepared for publication by Professor Myles Burnyeat with the mini- mum of editorial intervention. If someone then were to point at one of them and ask you, “What is it?”, your safest answer by far, with respect to the truth, would be to say “gold”, but never “triangle” or any of the other shapes that come to be in the gold, as though it is these, because they change even while you‟re making the statement. Timeaus, 50a–b “That,” he said, “is my speech about Love, Eryximachus. It is rather different from yours. As I begged you earlier, don‟t make comedy of it…” Symposium, 193d III IV Abstract What is it that we really love when we love an individual person, and to what extent are we egoistical in the search for happy love? Moreover, what/whom should we love, and for what reason? I approach the subject “Love and the Individual” by analyzing Gregory Vlastos‟ two main charges against Plato‟s theory of love: Firstly, that Plato‟s theory fails to give a satisfying account of love directed from one individual towards another individual; and secondly, that it is essentially egoistical. Throughout the thesis I underscore the points considered vulnerable to criticism, and highlight the phenomena subjected to insufficient treatment. -

To factor the histories of colonialism, slavery, and race hierarchies, is to reconsider the analysis of women’s subordination and exclusion from the public and political sphere by virtue of sex. It is also to reconsider some of the conven- tions of white feminism’s historical rights claims, among them, the depiction of the family and home as spaces in which women have primarily been confined to a subordinated and limiting domestic role. This depiction, as has been empha- sized by a number of intersectionality theorists, occludes the different status and meaning of home and family under the conditions of colonization and slavery. For example, bell hooks opens Ain’t I a woman by distinguishing the specific forms of violence to which female slaves were exposed in the United States, and also by emphasizing slaves’ lack of legal freedom to marry, lack of parental rights, lack of secure private domestic spaces in which to enjoy intimacy and family bonds, exposure to sexual violence, dispossession of children, and the regulation of de facto unions.2 While this isn’t to forget, as hooks emphasizes, that in their do- mestic unions, enslaved women were also subject to gender subordination,3 pa- triarchal domination might not be the only or best means of understanding the forms of both power and resistance most salient to the home. -
Did Socrates Separate the Forms?1
David O. Brink; UCSD Draft of 10-25-20 DID SOCRATES SEPARATE THE FORMS?1 Abstract: Aristotle tells us that Plato separates the forms whereas Socrates does not. Aristotle himself thinks that Plato was wrong to separate the forms and that Socrates was right not to. Commentators have focused on the meaning of separation and reconstructing and assessing Aristotle’s criticisms of Plato, for the most part accepting Aristotle’s claim that Socrates did not separate the forms. This essay challenges that assumption. Separation involves the capacity for independent existence. If so, Socratic assumptions about definition, knowledge, and the primacy of character imply that the forms of the virtues not only can but do exist uninstantiated. In addition to Plato’s early dialogues, Aristotle provides some of the most important and influential evidence we have about Socrates and his relationship to Plato.2 Among the things that Aristotle tells us is that Plato separates the forms whereas Socrates does not (Metaphysics I.6, 987a31-b10; XIII.4, 1078b29-31; XIII.9, 1086a30-b12). Aristotle himself thinks that Plato was wrong to separate the forms and that Socrates was right not to (1086b3-7). Though we are free to disagree with Aristotle’s philosophical verdict about the merits of separation, we have reason to take his testimony about the content of the views of Socrates and Plato quite seriously. He was a member of Plato’s Academy for twenty years, and he presumably had better information about the views of Socrates and Plato than is available to us. Aristotle’s testimony provides evidence for distinguishing within Plato’s dialogues between Socratic and Platonic dialogues and for a broadly developmental, rather than unitarian, reading of the relation between Socrates and Plato.3 Aristotle’s claims raise a number of interpretive and systematic issues. -
Friendship As a Non-Relative Virtue

Friedman his article takes its bearings from Martha Nussbaum’s “Non-Relative Virtues: An Aristotelian Approach,” which argues that Aristotle’s ethics Tare grounded in fundamental and hence universal spheres of human func- tioning in which the various virtues are meant to represent excellent action.1 In calling attention to this important underlying feature of Aristotle’s account, Nussbaum articulates a promising approach to the virtues that can accommo- date cultural variations in their expression. The underlying spheres or “ground- ing experiences” that she identifies allow for the possibility of comparison among different accounts of what good action entails. Once such a sphere has been identified as the proper locus of the virtue in question, those who disagree about the appropriate ways of acting can be seen, not as talking past one another, but rather as “arguing about the same thing, and advancing competing specifi- cations of the same virtue.”2 A virtue ethics based on Aristotle’s structure can thus remain grounded in human experience while also critiquing local customs in the name of “a more inclusive account of the circumstances of human life.”3 The aim of this article is to explore what such an approach to the virtues might look like in practice. To that end, it takes up the case study of friendship, the pinnacle of Aristotle’s account of the ethical life. Friendship is a somewhat problematic virtue: Aristotle says it is a virtue or “involves virtue,” and there is a strong case to be made that both claims are true. -
