Dear Reader,

I won’t deny that I really love a catalog like this. Partly, it’s all the pretty stuff, and I really do love the gorgeous covers that our art director, David Fassett, and his team create for our titles. Partly it’s the interviews and excerpts we include, since we think this should be as much like a magazine or journal as possible. (You’ll find substantive content on pages 7, 10, 19, and 31 in this issue.) But really it’s about the books, of course. Books are all about bridge building—jumping gaps, making connections, and closing circuits so the power can flow. Books are all about giving readers an experience they wouldn’t otherwise have: an experience with an author who’s been somewhere, done something, learned something, lived something. And books are all about giving authors an opportunity they wouldn’t otherwise have: to multiply their gifts, share the load, and spread the wealth. It’s that two-way street that’s so amazing—the mutuality of the reader/author relationship where the power lies. And of course you are right there at that junction, that synapse of reader and author. It goes without saying that you are readers, and many of you (given that you’re holding an IVP Academic catalog) are surely authors. In this season’s catalog you’ll find new and forthcoming titles across our usual wide range of fields, from the physical sciences and philosophy to race and the New Testament. Even if your focus is trained on one particular realm of intellectual endeavor, I hope you’ll dip into other sections of this catalog and be encouraged to see what your peers are reading and writing in other quarters. Where we diverge, no less than where we come together, creates tremendous social capital for us as a community. So thanks for being part of all this! I look forward to finding new ways together to bridge the gaps that we see so prevalent in our cultures and institutions. We at IVP Academic think about such bridge building a lot, and the roles you play in the classroom, church, neighborhood, and library are a huge blessing to us all.

Yours,

A Comprehensive Textbook on Origins from a Scientific Perspective The question of origins remains a stumbling block for many. But just as the Psalmist gained insight into God’s character through the observation of nature, modern scientific study can deepen and enrich our vision of the Creator and our place in his creation. In this often contentious field Bishop, Funck, Lewis, Moshier, and Walton serve as our able guides. Based on over two decades of teaching origins together in the classroom, the authors present a textbook exploring mainstream scientific theories of origins in astronomy, cosmology, chemistry, geology, biology, physical anthropology, and genetics. While many authors engage origins from a Christian perspective, this is the first work offering a full-fledged discussion of the scientific narrative of origins, from the Big Bang through humankind, accessible to a lay audience in biblical and theological perspective. Topics include • Principles of biblical interpretation • Close readings of relevant Genesis texts • A comprehensive trinitarian doctrine of creation • Cosmic origins • The geologic history of Earth • The origin of life on Earth • The origin of species and diversity of life • Human origins • New creation and creation care • Science education

A Complete Guide to Philosophical Themes and Figures Plato. Aristotle. Augustine. Hume. Kant. Hegel. These names and the philosophies associated with them ring through the minds of every student and scholar of philosophy. And in their search for knowledge, every student of philosophy needs to know the history of the philosophical discourse such giants have bequeathed us. Noted philosopher C. Stephen Evans brings his expertise to this daunting task as he surveys the history of Western philosophy, from the Pre-Socratics to Nietzsche and postmodernism —and every major figure and movement in between.

“When a world-class Christian philosopher writes on the history of Western philosophy, one can expect a first-rate work that illuminates and enriches—and that is just what we find here. Evans’s book effec- tively distills key philosophical figures and their ideas, considering both their historical context and their lasting influence. What we have in this volume is a marvelous resource that engages key thinkers and philosophical concepts judiciously, insightfully, and Christianly.”

Disability Studies ENGAGEMENTS MISSIOLOGICAL BENJAMIN T. CONNER In recent decades churches have accommodated disabled people in various ways. Through access ramps and elevators and sign language, disabled persons are invited in to worship. But are they actually enfolded into the church’s mission? Have the able-bodied come to recognize and appreciate the potential contributions of people with disabilities in the ministry and witness of the church? DISABLING MISSION, ENABLING WITNESS Benjamin Conner wants to stimulate a new conversation between disability studies and Christian theology and missiology. How can DISABLING MISSION, we shape a new vision of the entire body of Christ sharing in the ENABLING WITNESS witness of the church? How would it look if we “disabled” Christian theology, discipleship, and theological education? Conner has seen it happen and he shows us how. A Patristic Perspective on Origins Texts Do the writings of the church fathers support a literalist interpreta- tion of Genesis 1? Young-earth creationists have maintained that they do. And it is sensible to look to the Fathers as a check against our modern biases. But before enlisting the Fathers as ammunition in our contemporary Christian debates over creation and evolu- tion, some cautions are in order. Are we correctly representing the Fathers and their concerns? How can we avoid flattening the Fathers’ thinking into an indexed source book in our quest for estab- lishing their significance for contemporary Christianity? Craig Allert notes the abuses of patristic texts and introduces the Fathers within their ancient context. What can we learn from a Basil or Theophilus, an Ephrem or Augustine, as they meditate and expound on themes in Genesis 1? How were they speaking to their own culture and the questions of their day? Might they have some- thing to teach us about listening carefully to Scripture as we wrestle with the great axial questions of our own day? Allert’s study prods us to consider whether contemporary evangeli- cals, laudably seeking to be faithful to Scripture, may in fact be more bound to modernity in our reading of Genesis 1 than we realize. Here is a book that resets our understanding of early Christian interpretation and the contemporary conversation about Genesis 1.

Fully Revised Edition of a Classic New Testament Textbook Many introductions to the New Testament zero in on the historical contexts in which the New Testament literature was written. This introduction goes further—to give particular attention to the social, cultural, and rhetorical contexts of the New Testament authors and their writings. Few introductions to the New Testament integrate instruction in exegetical and interpretive strategies with the customary considera- tions of authorship, dating, audience, and message. This introduction introduces students to a relevant facet of interpretation with each portion of New Testament literature. Recognizing that the New Testa- ment itself—in its parts and as a whole—is a pastoral resource, each chapter closes with a discussion of implications for ministry formation. First published in 2004, David A. deSilva’s comprehensive and carefully crafted introduction to the New Testament has been long established as an authoritative textbook and resource for students. This beautiful, full-color second edition has been updated throughout with new scholarship and numerous images. The pages of this integrative text brim with maps, photos, points of interest, and aids to learning, and separate chapters explore the historical and cultural environment of the New Testament era, the nature of the Gospels and the quest for the , and the life of Paul. It is the first choice for those convinced that a New Testament introduction should integrate scholarship and ministry.

Rethinking the Meaning of Glory in Romans With its soaring affirmations and profound statements of salvation in Christ, Romans 8 is a high point in Pauline theology. But what does Paul mean when in 8:29 he speaks of being “conformed to the image of his Son”? Remarkably, there has been little scholarly attention awarded to this Pauline statement of the goal of salvation. Is it a moral or spir- itual or sanctifying conformity to Christ, or to his suffering, or does it point to an eschatological transformation into radiant glory? Haley Goranson Jacob probes and reopens a text perhaps too familiar and a meaning too often assumed. If conformity to the image of the Son is the goal of salvation, a proper understanding is paramount. Jacob points out that the key lies in the meaning of “glory” in Paul’s biblical-theological perspective and in how he uses the language of glory in Romans. Not only is this study valuable for bringing fresh understanding to Paul’s narrative of glory, but it also introduces a new and compelling reading of Romans 8:29. This work makes a strong bid to reorient our understanding of Paul’s classic statement of the goal of salvation.

“After a lifetime of study and teaching on Romans, I was not expecting to be confronted at my age with a fresh understanding of its central chapter, requiring a radical rethink of many familiar land- marks both exegetical and theological. But that is what Dr. Jacob has achieved. . . . I urge all students of Paul and of Romans to work carefully through the step-by-step presentation of the case.”

What Do Hymnic Texts Tell Us About Early Christian Worship? We know that the earliest Christians sang hymns. But are some of these early Christian hymns preserved for us in the New Testament? Are they right before our eyes? New Testament scholars have long debated whether early Christian hymns appear in the New Testament. And where some see preformed hymns and liturgical elements embossed on the page, others see patches of rhetorically elevated prose from the author’s hand. Matthew Gordley now reopens this fascinating question. He begins with a new look at hymns in the Greco-Roman and Jewish world of the early church. Might the didactic hymns of those cultural currents set a new starting point for talking about hymnic texts in the New Testament? If so, how should we detect these hymns? Empire and Imperialism in Mark’s Gospel Adam Winn begins his study of the Gospel of Mark by exploring the cataclysmic destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in AD 70. For Jews and Christians it was an apocalyptic moment. The earth shook, the sun went dark in the cosmic canopy, and Rome danced on the ruins of the holy temple. The gods of Rome seemed to have conquered the God of the Jews. And Roman Christians’ allegiance to a messiah crucified by Rome renewed sharp questions. Could it be that Mark wrote his Gospel in response to Roman imperial propaganda surrounding this event? However else they might function, are Mark’s themes and christological titles coded subversions of empire? Have we missed clues to understanding Mark’s messianic secret? Could a messiah crucified by Rome really be God’s Son appointed to rule the world? Adam Winn takes us on the adventure of rediscovering how Mark might have been read by Christians in Rome in the aftermath of the fall of Jerusalem. He introduces us to the Roman imperial propa- ganda of the Flavian emperors and excavates the Markan text for themes that address the Roman imperial setting. Here is an intriguing look into a first-century response to the question “Christ or Caesar?” Entering a first-century house church in Rome, we hear this Gospel again as if for the first time.

Incarnation, Embodiment, and Human Flourishing in the Digital Age Technology is not neutral. From the plow to the printing press, technology has always shaped human life and informed our understanding of what it means to be human. And advances in modern technology, from computers to smartphones, have yielded tremendous benefits. But do these devel- opments actually encourage human flourishing? Craig Gay raises concerns about the theological implications of modern technologies and philosophical movements such as transhumanism. In response, he turns to a classical affirmation of the Christian faith: Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of God, took on human flesh. By exploring the doctrine of the incarnation and what it means for our embodiment, Gay offers a course correction to the path of modern technology without asking us to unplug completely. The doctrine of the incarnation is not neutral either. It presents to us an alternative vision for the future of humanity.

“Craig Gay is neither a luddite nor a technophile. He’s something much different—a thoughtful, engaged theologian grappling with some of the core questions raised by modern technology and its apparent move toward disembodied life. The church faces an unprecedented loss of rising generations. Young adults who were active and engaged in the local church are leaving the community behind after high school. What can we do? Responding to these concerning statistics, Sharon Galgay Ketcham reflects theologically on the church community and its role in forming faith. She exposes problems in the way leaders conceive of and teach about the relationship between individual faith and the local church, and offers fresh solutions in the form of values and practices that can shape a community into a place where faith will flourish in those both young and old.

Should all Christians be married? Although we might quickly respond no, our cultural stories and norms—including those in the church—often communicate yes. Theologian and husband Kutter Callaway considers why marriage, which is a blessing from God, shouldn’t be expected or required of all Christians. Through an examination of Scrip- ture, cultural analysis, and personal accounts, he reflects on how our narratives have limited our understanding of marriage and obscured our view of the life-giving and kingdom-serving roles of single people in the church. In doing so, Callaway helps the church craft a new story that transforms the way we look at marriage and affirms the contributions of all to the body of Christ.

Field-Tested Insights for Crosscultural Education In our globalized world, ideas are constantly being exchanged between people of different cultural backgrounds. But educators James E. Plueddemann often struggle to adapt to the contexts of diverse learners. Some focus so much on content delivery that they overlook crosscultural barriers to effective teaching. Educator and missiologist James Plueddemann offers field-tested insights for teaching across cultural differences. He unpacks how different cultural dynamics may inhibit learning and offers a frame- work for integrating conceptual ideas into practical experience. He provides a model of teaching as pilgrimage, where the aim is not merely the mastery of information but the use of knowledge to foster the development of the pilgrim learner. Plueddemann’s crosscultural experience shows how teachers can make connections between content and context, bridging truth and life. Those who teach in educational institutions, mission organizations, churches, and other ministries will find insights here for transforma- tional crosscultural learning.

A LOOK INSIDE

FROM CHAPTER 6: PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE

Begin reading James K. A. Smith’s contribution to The State of the Evangelical Mind.

Because of this continued disconnect between the work of evangelical reflection and the paucity of careful, nuanced thought in evangelical congregations, it seems to me that future energy for developing the evangelical mind should be focused on closing this gap.

It was important for a generation of evangelical scholars to devote themselves to CONTRIBUTOR JAMES K. A. honing what we might call “guild” scholarship—engaging the mainstream of the SMITH academy from and with an evangelical standpoint, bearing witness to the resources of the Christian imagination for careful thinking about the world, God, and others. This generation of work also brought the discipline, richness, and needed complexity to spaces of evangelical teaching and learning, enlivening the intellectual environment where evangelical leaders are being formed. But the fruits and effects of this renewal have largely remained sequestered from the broad network of evangelical congregations, parachurch ministries, media conglomerates, and celebrity influencers. A renaissance of the evangelical mind that does not contribute to the reform and renewal of the church is but a clanging symbol, I fear.

In his landmark essay “Advice to Christian Philosophers,” Alvin Plantinga exhorted Christian scholars to exhibit integrity and boldness in their scholarly agendas—to not just ask the questions that the academy was asking but to wrestle with the questions that the church is facing. The future of the evangelical mind needs a generation of careful Christian scholars who are willing to take up the cross of being “popularizers”—careful thinkers from across the disciplines who are willing to do their homework and apprentice themselves to the standards of scholarly labor, but then are willing to forego the typical academic ladder of success in order to take the fruits of such reflectionto these disconnected spaces. In this sense, evangelicalism is a mission field for evangelical scholarship. And I certainly do not mean just theologians and apologists; we need sociologists and biochemists and environmental scientists and political scientists who are willing to translate the fruit of their expertise for the sake of equipping the evangelical community to carry out its mission.

MacDonald’s Theology of the Supernatural The Bible is full of miracles. Yet how do we make sense of them today? And where might we see miracles in our own lives? In this installment of the Hansen Lectureship Series, historian and theologian Timothy Larsen considers the legacy of George MacDonald, the Victorian Scottish author and minister who is best known for his pioneering fantasy literature, which influenced authors such as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, G. K. Chesteron, and Madeleine L’Engle. Larsen explores how, throughout his life and writings, MacDonald sought to counteract skepticism, unbelief, naturalism, and materi- alism and to herald instead the reality of the miraculous, the super- natural, the wondrous, and the realm of the spirit. The Hansen Lectureship series offers accessible and insightful reflections by Wheaton College faculty members on the transforma- tive work of the Wade Center authors.

“In this exquisitely argued, beautifully crafted, and elegantly written thesis, Timothy Larsen offers a beguiling mediation on incarnation, doubt, and re-enchantment. With his careful and nuanced focus on George MacDonald, Timothy Larsen has produced a poised, sumptuous, and sublime theological essay—worthy, indeed, of Lewis, Chesterton, Tolkien, L’Engle, and MacDonald. This is Christian apologetics at its best and from one of the finest public intellectuals writing in our time.”

Reading Hosea as Christian Scripture The prophet Hosea lived through the tumultuous final decades of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. The Assyrian invasion culminated in the destruction of Samaria, the end of the Northern Kingdom, and the exile of many of its people. Hosea called the people to faith in God through warnings of judgment and promises of hope. He exposed the people’s infidelity as they turned to other nations, to their own counsels, or to other gods for their life and prosperity. Such turning to others for what God alone could give them was, using Hosea’s most famous metaphor, “whoring.” As God’s people, they needed to reckon with their God, who had showered them with care and grace. For Hosea, it was their refusal to return to their Lord that brought God’s judgment upon them in the form of the Assyrian invasion. In this Apollos Old Testament Commentary, Joshua Moon sets the prophecies of Hosea in the context of the eighth century BC. The concern of his commentary is the importance of reading Hosea as Christian scripture, in which we are meant to hear God’s voice as he calls his people to himself. Moon demonstrates the continuing importance of hearing God’s words through Hosea, situating the reading of each section within larger biblical and theological concerns.

APOLLOS OLD TESTAMENT COMMENTARY

Edited by David W. Baker and Gordon J. Wenham, the Apollos Old Testament Commentary aims to take with equal seriousness the divine and human aspects of Scripture.

Each commentary contains an introduction that gives an overview of the book and an annotated translation of the Hebrew text. Within the commentary, form and structure sections examine the context of each passage, its use of rhetorical devices, and source and form-critical issues, while comment sections offer exegesis of the historical and theological meaning of each passage. STUDIES IN CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE AND SCRIPTURE

Studies in Christian Doctrine and Scripture, edited by Daniel J. Treier and Kevin J. Vanhoozer, promotes evangelical contributions to systematic theology, seeking fresh understanding of Christian doctrine through creatively faithful engagement with Scripture in dialogue with catholic tradition(s).

Volumes in SCDS explore the synergy between Scripture and contemporary issues, rooted in the classic evangelical commitment to Scripture as well as the perpetual need to contextualize with creative fidelity. Likewise, these volumes promote historically informed engagements with the crucial themes of classic dogmatics and contemporary systematic theology in order to promote scholarship that is theologically competent and biblically literate. This series promotes evangelical contributions to Christian doctrine by reflecting different approaches, appealing to biblical theology, history of interpretation, theological interpretation of Scripture, and more. Some volumes engage in detailed exegesis while others appropriate broader biblical themes and patterns with the ultimate goal of promoting the constructive engagement between Scripture and Christian theology.

HOW TO READ SERIES

We should read a poem very differently than we read a history book, and we read both of them differently than we’d read a novel. The same is true when it comes to our approach to Scripture. That’s why this series does just what its name describes: helps you understand the proper way to read various books of the Bible. The authors examine books of Scripture and give you the background knowledge, literary analysis, and theological input to help you read the book as it was meant to be read.
