There have been incredible changes in the arts scene in Belfast over the past decade. In North SUMMARY Belfast, the MAC has been built in the Cathedral Quarter; in South Belfast, the Lyric Theatre has been rebuilt and the Crescent Arts Centre has been completely refurbished; in the city centre, the Grand Opera House has been extended and expanded with the addition of the Baby Grand studio theatre and the Ulster Hall has been comprehensively refurbished. There have also been many 1.1 OVERVIEW other positive developments for the arts in Belfast that have not involved capital projects. However, to date, East Belfast has seen limited benefit from these major developments. • WILLIAM MACQUITTY (1905-2004) Film Maker, Writer and Photographer
HIDDEN GEMS AND FORGOTTEN PEOPLE WILLIAM MACQUITTY (1905-2004) Film Maker, Writer and Photographer William MacQuitty was born on 15 May 1905, the son of the managing director of The Belfast Telegraph. Educated at Campbell College he joined the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. Having worked briefly in Belfast and London, in 1936 he took up his first posting in the Far East, at Amritsar in Punjab where he was enthralled by the exotic contrast of the Orient with his homeland. In l928 he became a founder member of the Lahore Flying Club. He worked in Ceylon, Siam, Malaya and China before returning to Ireland in 1939. Having briefly worked at farming and beginning medical studies in London, his attention switched to filmmaking as his amateur film Simple Silage, made for the benefit of Ulster farming neighbours, came to the attention of the Ministry of Information. MacQuitty's contributions to the war effort included Out of Chaos, a portrait of the war artists Henry Moore, Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland, among others, and The Way We Live, which chronicled the rebuilding of the heavily bombed city of Plymouth. Big feature films followed: Happy Family, Street Corner, The Beachcomber; Above us the Waves; The Black Tent and The Informers. His greatest achievement in films was A Night to Remember, the classic account of the sinking of the Titanic, which was doubly satisfying because in 1911 as a six-year-old he had witnessed the ship being launched. In 1959 MacQuitty helped to found Ulster Television, becoming its first managing director.

Construction begins on Olympic. 1909 march 31: Keel laid down for Harland and Wolff yard number 401, and Titanic construction begins. 1911 may 31: Titanic hull successfully launched, and witnessed by more than 100,000 people. At the time, Titanic is the largest man-made object ever moved (Olympic was the second biggest). September 20: Olympic, under the guidance of Captain Edward J. Smith who would later captain Titanic, has her hull badly damaged in a collision with Royal Navy cruiser Hawke. Titanic’s maiden voyage delayed due to necessary diversion of workers and materials to repair Olympic. October 11: White Star Line officially announces a new date for Titanic’s maiden voyage in the London Times - April 10, 1912. 1912 January: Lifeboats are installed on Titanic. It is suggested that the ship can carry more boats, but the suggestions are rejected as an economy measure.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Above Us the Waves The Story of Midget Submarines and Human Torpedoes by C.E.T. Warren Above Us the Waves: The Story of Midget Submarines and Human Torpedoes (Pen & Sword Military Classics): 77. Synopsis: It was the Italians who pioneered the use of two-man human torpedoes or 'chariots', and their attacks on ships of the Royal Navy in Alexandria Harbour in 1941 caused Winston Churchill to write to the Chief of Staffs committee to enquire what was being done to emulate these daring attacks. The result was the development of British 'chariots' which were regarded as stop-gaps until the X-craft or midget submarines could be deployed. The book is divided into five parts. The first covers the development, training, growing pains and the attempt on the Tirpitz, the second and third to Mediterranean and Norwegian operations, while the fourth deals with the coast of Fortress Europe and the Normandy Beaches. Part Five considers the special preparations for the Far East and the exploits achieved in the fight against the Japanese. There are several appendices and an index to complete an absorbing record of a novel and important innovation in warfare.
