OUR OPINION Pretend it’s Monday e’re assuming you drive safely already, but don’t wait till Monday to W get back in extra-safe driving mode for the resumption of classes at district public schools. Here’s what we mean. If you regularly cross a school zone on your way to work, start imagining that light already blinking on today’s commute, so as to help get your mind back in shape for the real thing Monday. It’s good mental exercise, because no matter how careful we may think we are, once behind the wheel, many of us are partly on automatic pilot. At least some of the time. Put your phone down and don’t be fiddling with the radio, AC, GPS or loose change in the center console. Keep your hands on the wheel. But that’s only half the battle. It’s not your hands that are distracted when you are doing something you shouldn’t, it 9-year ordeal is your brain. That’s why studies show that hands-free phones are hardly safer than the regular kind. So stay focused. PREP FOOTBALL DISCIPLINARY ACTION Jackson sends strong message to players at practice

By JORDAN KROEGER [email protected]

FORT WHITE — The rules were pretty simple — don’t tackle players to the ground. Derrick Roberson and Kameron Calhoun did it on back-to-back plays during Wednesday’s practice. That pushed Fort White head coach Demetric Jackson to the edge. Then Calhoun talked back, and that sent Jackson over it. Jackson ended practice by making the Indians run stadiums, do push ups and more. It’s not the first time Jackson has done it but it doesn’t happen often. He recalls doing it maybe three times in his entire career, most recently in 2015. Players started with sta- diums before coming down to the field for stations that included sit ups, push ups, walk downs and up downs. Then it was off to the track before finishing with stadi- ums. After that, they did the entire program one more time. Jackson was out to send a message — to win games you have to be dis- ciplined. “This team is talented. It’s not that they don’t have talent. There’s discipline issues,” Jackson said. “They’ll win games because they have more talent than teams we play but what about the teams that have equal or better talent than you?” Those discipline issues hadn’t reared their head in training camp until Wednesday, but Jackson didn’t want it to get out of hand ahead of next Friday’s Preseason Classic against Middleburg. Plus, there were several instances last season where pen- alties derailed drives for the Indians or cost them points. Jackson also put his foot down because he doesn’t want to lose the team.

He pointed to Calhoun tackling running back Leon Watkins to the ground, a running back he blocks for on offense as the team’s starting fullback. Watkins is supposed to count on Calhoun in a game, not worry about getting slammed by him in practice. “We talked about it at the begin- ning of the season — chemistry and discipline,” Jackson said. “Talent is going to come. You’ve either got the talent or you don’t. You’re only going to coach what you’ve got. But you can control the penalties because that’s based on discipline and the comraderie and culture that you build.” The fact that it was Roberson and Calhoun that broke the rules sur- prised Jackson even more. They’re two seniors who Jackson is count- ing on at linebacker to lead the defense this season. Jackson loved Roberson’s and Calhoun’s hustle to the ball, but he needs his players to learn how to get to the line but not cross it come Friday nights. “We’re looking for that alpha dog,” Jackson said. “We’re looking for that guy that can push the enve- lope because that’s a good football Photos by JORDAN KROEGER/Lake City Reporter player. You’ve got to know how to have discipline when you wrap that guy up but don’t sling him down. In a game when the referee blows the whistle but you want to get the last word and sling him down, well that’s a 15-yard penalty. That’s going to cost you.” Jackson also needed to let his team know that talking back isn’t acceptable, even for a senior leader like Calhoun. “Kam is one of those guys that has great potential but doesn’t have the greatest work ethic,” Jackson said. “But he has the size so I had colleges all over him looking at him initially. But when they watch him play you don’t see that fire so we’ve been on him to give us that fire. Then he wants to talk back that he was hustling. Yeah, you’re hustling to get to the ball but you’re slam- ming the running back. He just had to get the last word.” Instead, Jackson did. Fort White players perform push ups.
