Waterfall Program FINAL 5-15-15 Dear Friends, As I write this, I am amazed to realize that we have come to the end of our 2014-15 season We have had a truly wonderful Sheldon Epps year here at The Playhouse, and I am proud Artistic Director to say that we have touched so many theatrical bases with great skill, experti se, and arti stry The quality of the work on our stage has been justly celebrated and rewarded recently in so many ways I am grati fi ed that many of you have been with us on these journeys throughout the season, experiencing a variety of delights— from Shaw to Cole Porter, from new plays to revivals, and from searing drama to musical frivolity I am very proud to have had yet another rewarding season I am even more proud that we are closing out the year with the premiere producti on of Waterfall, a new American musical One of the more fortunate parts of my job is being introduced to potenti al new projects for our stage on nearly a daily basis It is exciti ng for this theatre to be desired as a home for the “care and feeding” of new plays and musicals That is especially the case when the project itself and the creati ve team involved are also highly desirable, and would be most welcome at any major theatre I am therefore tremendously honored that those involved sought out The Playhouse (along with the highly esteemed 5th Avenue Theatre in Seatt le) to give birth to this project I am a longti me fan of the writi ng team of Richard Maltby, Jr and David Shire They have created some of the most admired works in the American musical theatre canon And I have come to greatly admire our director, Tak Viravan, who brings to this producti on a combinati on of authenti city and theatrical verve, which is exactly what is needed My thanks to the enti re creati ve team and to our enti re cast who have the requisite spirit of adventure that is so needed to bring a new musical to life My special thanks to our producing partner, Jack Dalgleish, whose passion for this project was so evident from the moment we fi rst discussed the show That passion for this musical has conti nued to burn strongly throughout the enti re process Even as we fi nish the year with the thrill of this exciti ng new musical on our stage, we are already deeply involved in bringing together our next thrilling season On another page of this program you can read about what is in store Once again, we have put together a season that is dynamically eclecti c and as potenti ally exciti ng as the recent “traffi c on our stage” We will make every eff ort, with the full support of the many arti sts involved, to deliver another season that will make all of us arti sti cally vibrant, nurtured, nourished, and theatrically fulfi lled I invite you to subscribe to the 2015-16 season and to be with us for each of our next journeys, as well Believe me, your being “on the ride” with us is what makes each performance unique, special, and disti nct For now, let yourselves be carried away by the rich and romanti c journey of Waterfall, which is full of delights for the eyes and ears and hopefully for the soul, as well Sincerely, sheldon Epps Arti sti c Director of The Pasadena Playhouse PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P1 a NOtE FrOM thE DIrECtOrs sheldon Epps Arti sti c Director Waterfall is about love. • Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed, Based on Four Puppet Plays by the Italian Presents Futurist Artist Fortunato Depero (1892–1960)
the richard b. fisher center DEMOLISHING for the performing EVERYTHING arts at WITH bard college AMAZING SPEED July 7–17, 2016 Dear Friends, The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College Chair Jeanne Donovan Fisher It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the Fisher Center for the world premiere of Dan Hurlin’s President Leon Botstein Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed, based on four puppet plays by the Italian presents futurist artist Fortunato Depero (1892–1960). The production is part of the annual Bard SummerScape Festival, which this year celebrates the life and work of Giacomo Puccini. Depero and Puccini were contemporaries, though their aesthetic interests could hardly World Premiere have been more opposite. The futurists were self-declared revolutionaries, who took inspiration from the technological advances of the early 20th century to imagine an art of the future, celebrating new frontiers of ingenuity and possibility. For Depero and his DEMOLISHING allies, Puccini represented the decedent past, his grand operas mired in a neoclassical dependence on psychology and emotion. The futurists strove to create a dehumanized art that celebrated speed, automation, and mechanized warfare. They dreamed of theater EVERYTHING WITH and dance that required no human performers, and created plans for elaborate, abstract ballets and plays with machines and marionettes—few of which were ever staged. These included the four scenarios by Depero, known collectively as Dramma Plastico Futurista AMAZING SPEED (Futurist Plastic Theater), which you will see produced for the first time, almost a century after their composition in 1917.
