Made from 2,400 individual panels of transparent grey Plexiglas acrylic manufactured by Rohm and Haas Co., the dome was 250 feet wide and 187 feet high, and was constructed only after a miniature prototype survived exhaustive structural load tests by Rohm 12 and Haas. “Three shades of grey in the Getty / Images BlackJack3D Photo: Cover Plexiglas decrease in degree of light trans- mittance from the base to the top of the dome to achieve excellent daylighting in- side,” our story added. • RHYME and REASON Reading the Bible in the Vernacular
RHYME and REASON Reading the Bible in the vernacular: A closer look on the translation strategies used in Bible-translations in Old Norse and Middle Dutch. Cathrine Renaa Supervisor: Professor Karl G. Johansson Masterthesis. Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies November 2015 Abstract This thesis compares Stjórn I and de Rijmbijbel, two medieval vernacular translations of the Bible mediated through Historia Scholastica. Rita Copeland has studied medieval translation strategies and come to the conclusion that appropriation was a much used medieval method when translating Latin texts into vernacular languages. Stjórn I and de Rijmbijbel are at a first glance very different from each other, and also written in two different environments; one close to the medieval European centre of learning, one in the periphery of Europe. The comparison aimed to uncover which translation strategies the respective writers used, and if these strategies differed. A closer study of the chapters Genesis 1 and 2 shows that the two texts has surprisingly many similarities, and when compared to their source-text Historia Scholastica and a medieval English translation of the same source, the similarities are even more obvious. Both use the same translation strategies and both seem to use appropriation, adapting the material to their respective audiences. A study of the prologues of Stjórn I and de Rijmbijbel, together with their respective strategies, language and treatment of the material, makes a tentative hypothesis on their intended audience possible. Stjórn I seems, as is said in its prologue, to have been written primarly with a male audience, probably at the king’s court, in mind.

  • Haruhi in Usa: a Case Study of a Japanese Anime in the United States
HARUHI IN USA: A CASE STUDY OF A JAPANESE ANIME IN THE UNITED STATES A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Ryotaro Mihara August 2009 © 2009 Ryotaro Mihara ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Although it has been more than a decade since Japanese anime became a popular topic of conversation when discussing Japan, both within the United States and in other countries as well, few studies have empirically investigated how, and by whom, anime has been treated and consumed outside of Japan. This research thus tries to provide one possible answer to the following set of questions: What is the empirical transnationality of anime? How and by whom is anime made transnational? How is anime transnationally localized/consumed? In order to answer the questions, I investigated the trans-pacific licensing, localizing, and consuming process of the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Haruhi) from Japan to the United States by conducting fieldwork in the United States’ agencies which localized Haruhi as well as U.S. anime and Haruhi fans. The central focus of this research is the ethnography of agencies surrounding Haruhi in the United States and Japan. I assume that these agencies form a community with a distinctive culture and principles of behaviors and practices in the handling of the Haruhi anime texts. The research findings to the above questions could be briefly summarized as follows. The worldview, characters, and settings of Haruhi (i.e. a fictious world of Haruhi which is embodied and described through its anime episodes and other related products) “reduces” and “diffuses” as it is transferred on the official business track from the producers in Japan to the localizers in the United States (i.e.

Moore iii THESIS ABSTRACT John D. Moore Master of Arts Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures September 2017 Title: Inside the Boy Inside the Robot: Mobile Suit Gundam and Interiority Mobile Suit Gundam (1979-1980) is an iconic series in the genre of television anime featuring giant fighting robots, embedded in a system of conventions developed across decades of media aimed at boys that emphasizes action and combat. In this thesis, I argue that Gundam foregrounds the interiority of its main character Amuro, challenging conventions governing the boy protagonist. Using Peter Verstraten's principles of film narratology and Thomas Lamarre’s theory of limited animation, I find in Gundam's narrative strategies sophisticated techniques developed to portray his inner life.

  • Animation Fandom in North America and East Asia from 1906–2010 By
Animating Transcultural Communities: Animation Fandom in North America and East Asia from 1906–2010 By Sandra Annett A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of English, Film, and Theatre University of Manitoba Winnipeg © 2011 Sandra Annett Abstract This dissertation examines the role that animation plays in the formation of transcultural fan communities. A ―transcultural fan community‖ is defined as a group in which members from many national, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds find a sense of connection across difference, engaging with each other through a mutual interest in animation while negotiating the frictions that result from their differing social and historical contexts. The transcultural model acts as an intervention into polarized academic discourses on media globalization which frame animation as either structural neo-imperial domination or as a wellspring of active, resistant readings. Rather than focusing on top-down oppression or bottom-up resistance, this dissertation demonstrates that it is in the intersections and conflicts between different uses of texts that transcultural fan communities are born. The methodologies of this dissertations are drawn from film/media studies, cultural studies, and ethnography. The first two parts employ textual close reading and historical research to show how film animation in the early twentieth century (mainly works by the Fleischer Brothers, Ōfuji Noburō, Walt Disney, and Seo Mitsuyo) and television animation in the late twentieth century (such as The Jetsons, Astro Boy and Cowboy Bebop) depicted and generated nationally and ethnically diverse audiences.

For the first time in history, Americans were able to watch a French television program as it was being broadcast. Several hours later, a program came to TV screens in this country "live" from Goonhilly Downs, England. While the programs originated in Europe, both came here by a circuitous route to and from outer space. European sig- nals were beamed skyward to rendezvous with the Telstar satellite. The 170-pound man-made heavenly wonder picked up the signals, magnified them 10 billion times and beamed them down again to this portion of our shrinking earth. This entire procedure took only milliseconds, since TV sig- nals travel at the speed of light—186,000 miles per second—and Telstar is never more than 3,500 miles above the earth.
