However, to write a volume on all the pioneers would require much more time and spat e than we have. The 26 pioneers chronicled here are certainly considered among the most important They spar over two thousand years, and cross many cultures. Some are theorists, others are practitioners But all of them have left their imprint on the leisure and recreation field. When the Publication Committee of the American Association for Lei- sure and Recreation approved my proposal for a volume on the pioneers of leisure and recreation, I sent a memo to over 300 colleagues asking it they would like to contribute Those who showed interest were students, followers, or chroniclers of some of these pioneers. Ch. 3 i 8 A'ZISTO1LE 3 Philosopher and educator Mortimer Adler claimed that philosophy is important for all people because it helps them to understand even better than they do now the things that they already know.For that purpose,' he wrote, ''there is no better teacher than Aristotle..Plato taught Aris- totle how to think philosophically, but Aristotle learned the lesson so well that he is the better teacher for all of us(Adler, 1978. ix x) In a volume presenting the accomplishments of the pioneers orrecre- ation and leisure, Aristotle obviously cannot be credited with heading a recreation agency or founding a professional organization Instead, Aris- totle conveyed ideas dnd, more importantly, ideals concerning the role of leisure in humankind's quest for a good life Had Adler been limiting his discussion to leisure and recreation, he might have also said thatin order to understand the c lassical presentation of leisure, there is no better teacher than Aristotle Aristotle was born in 384 Before the Common-Era, at the Macedonian city of Stagira, about 200 miles north of Athens. His lather, Nicomachus, was physician to Amyntds, King of Macedon and giandfather to Alexan- der Although Aristotle may have lived his early years recklessly and not made his way to Plato and the Academy until the age of 30, most accounts claim he went to Athens in his late teens and studied tinder his master teacher for a full 20 years Plato recognized the talc-nts of this man nearly 50 years his Junior, for he called Aristotlethe reader" and "the mind of the School." I gazed in admiration too strong for words.” (Ellen Big- elow, 1835, in Sullivan, p.14) The Minneapolis Park system has been held up as a paragon of design innovation, community involvement and administrative efficacy by users and professionals alike. In a land of 10,000 waters, Minneapolis is bejewelled with a ring of streams, rivers and over 20 lakes, including lakes Brownie, Calhoun, Cedar, Diamond, Harriet, Hiawatha, Mother, Nokomis, Sweeney, Twin, Wirth and host of smaller “puddles”. Although pres- ently faced with budget shortfalls, Minneapolis parks and open spaces continue to enjoy ongoing public support and heavy use by residents and visitors alike. Conceived in the early 1880s by a forward-thinking board of trade, the Minneapolis park system was established by legislative mandate in 1883. The Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board (MPRB) system retains much of its original character, including an independently elected park board, as well as the authority to levy taxes. As Alexan- der Garvin notes, “...Minneapolis park officials [have] more autonomy and accountabil- ity than their peers in every other big city in the country.” The first board hired Horace W.S. Cleveland, a landscape architect and protégé of city planner Frederick Law Olmsted, whose work included New York’s Prospect Park and Chicago’s South Park Commission.

    RHYME and REASON Reading the Bible in the vernacular: A closer look on the translation strategies used in Bible-translations in Old Norse and Middle Dutch. Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies November 2015 Abstract This thesis compares Stjórn I and de Rijmbijbel, two medieval vernacular translations of the Bible mediated through Historia Scholastica. Rita Copeland has studied medieval translation strategies and come to the conclusion that appropriation was a much used medieval method when translating Latin texts into vernacular languages. Stjórn I and de Rijmbijbel are at a first glance very different from each other, and also written in two different environments; one close to the medieval European centre of learning, one in the periphery of Europe. The comparison aimed to uncover which translation strategies the respective writers used, and if these strategies differed. A closer study of the chapters Genesis 1 and 2 shows that the two texts has surprisingly many similarities, and when compared to their source-text Historia Scholastica and a medieval English translation of the same source, the similarities are even more obvious. Both use the same translation strategies and both seem to use appropriation, adapting the material to their respective audiences. A study of the prologues of Stjórn I and de Rijmbijbel, together with their respective strategies, language and treatment of the material, makes a tentative hypothesis on their intended audience possible. Stjórn I seems, as is said in its prologue, to have been written primarly with a male audience, probably at the king’s court, in mind.
