Cheltenham Town in a 1-0 Home Win That Sees the Shrimps Looking Upwards at the Automatic Promotion Places Robins Rocked Morecambe beat league leaders Cheltenham Town in a 1-0 home win that sees the Shrimps looking upwards at the automatic promotion places. Sam Lavelle returned to the starting line-up for Morecambe in place of Nathaniel Knight- Percival, with the Shrimps centre-backs trading one game suspensions following back-to-back dismissals. Another enforced personnel switch saw a surprise start for Liam McAlinden, who replaced the injured Alex Kenyon. The latter change resulted in a tactical deviation from Morecambe manager Derek Adams, with the Shrimps opting for two frontmen and a fancy four-man midfield diamond in this fixture – not too dissimilar to how Morecambe finished the game in the win at Whaddon Road earlier in the season. Before Aaron Wildig got the game underway, both sets of players and officials observed a minutes silence in memory of Shrimps stalwart Dickie Danson, who passed away during the week. Dickie had fulfilled various roles at Morecambe FC since becoming second team manager in 1991, and was heavily influential in the clubs youth development programmes. In the opening stages the sides largely cancelled each other out, with both teams not allowing their opponents any time or space on the ball. Cheltenham appeared to be the more patient side, but lacking potency with their passing in the final third. McAlinden was given a sighter for Morecambe, shooting wide but adjudged to have been offside after a slide rule pass from Carlos Mendes Gomes. With 20 minutes on the clock a Liam Gibson nod forwards saw a tussle for possession between Cole Stockton and the Cheltenham defence. The ball was sQueezed through to the edge of the Robins box and into the path of Liam McAlinden. Through on goal McAlinden, perhaps benefiting from the earlier shot on goal, was able to compose himself well and lift a shot over the onrushing Scott Flinders into the net to give the Shrimps a 1-0 lead. Perhaps wary of the threat posed by McAlinden’s pace, Cheltenham responded to going behind by dropping their defensive cover. Shortly after taking the lead, an Aaron Wildig free kick into the Cheltenham box resulted in a goalmouth scramble, which was half cleared to John O’Sullivan who fired over from the edge of the box. O’Sullivan did find the net on 25 minutes via a deflected shot, but saw his effort chalked off by an offside flag in what was a frantic 5 minute period for the Shrimps. Cheltenham continued to look good on the ball, but without making many clear openings of their own or troubling Kyle Letheren in the Morecambe goal. A well worked corner routine saw Lewis Freestone head over the bar from the near post, whilst a cross into the box was just out of reach for Sam Smith who glanced his header harmlessly wide. Two other opportunities on the halftime whistle were well blocked by some alert Morecambe defending, as the Shrimps went into the break a goal to the good. The second half progressed much as the first half had ended, with the visitors pushing forwards for parity. Having enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, chances came and went intermittently. The Robins were ultimately thwarted by a combination of narrow misses, resolute defending and competent goalkeeping. Callum Wright had the best of Cheltenham’s openings after 60 minutes, beating Kelvin Mellor to a cross and heading just over the bar. Liam Sercombe also went close for the Robins, firing narrowly wide with Letheren beaten from 25 yards out. As Cheltenham began to commit players further forward a couple of promising breaks for Morecambe lacked a final pass to create opportunities of their own, and potentially avoid a less nervy finish to the game. Carlos Mendes Gomes headed wide late on, from a ball that was fizzed in by Stephen Hendrie. Having gone into the game looking short of options at the centre-half position, Harry Davis was forced to leave the field after 70 minutes after a clash of heads. This forced the Shrimps into a defensive reshuffle, but it was a setback that did not deter the sides endeavour to keep a clean sheet. The seemingly perennial threat the Ben Tozer long throw-in, a familiar foe over the years, was well marshalled all afternoon as part of an all-round defensive effort from front to back. Morecambe managed the final minutes well to hold on for a hard-fought 1-0 victory courtesy of their only shot on target throughout game. The win puts the Shrimps just a point outside of the automatic promotion places and firmly rooted in the playoff picture. Having seen off the previous leaders Cheltenham, Morecambe travel to the new table toppers Cambridge United on Good Friday looking to avenge a 5-0 defeat to the U’s earlier in the season. As the finishing line starts to come into focus, everything is still on the table for the Reds in what has been a remarkable turnaround for the club in a relatively short space of time. Shrimps: Letheren (GK), Mellor, Davis (68’), Lavelle (C), Gibson, Diagouraga, O’Sullivan (90’), Wildig (C), Mendes Gomes, McAlinden (66’), Stockton. Subs: Halstead (GK), Cooney (66’), Denny, Hendrie (68’), Price, Pringle (90’) MOTM: Liam Gibson – Another solid performance, moved to CB when called upon. Consecutive MOTM displays from the improving Gibson. .

  • Harrogate Town with a Solid Away Performance
Harro-great For Shrimps 10 man Morecambe back to winning ways, as they take an early lead to see off Harrogate Town with a solid away performance. Fresh from a rare week off in-between fixtures, a relatively well rested Shrimps side headed east to face in-form Yorkshire outfit Harrogate Town for an all-roses clash. With skipper Sam Lavelle suspended following an unsuccessful appeal against his red card last time out, Morecambe were glad to be able to call upon the services of fit again Nathaniel Knight- Percival. A surprise recall for Alex Kenyon in place of the influential Yann Songo’o, re- suspended for a further four games following the outcome of an elongated FA hearing, completed the enforced changes to the Shrimps starting line-up for the clubs first ever trip to Wetherby Road. Stand-in Morecambe Captain Aaron Wildig elected to kick down the slope in the first half, and that looked to be an inspired decision when the Shrimps caught the hosts cold. A Liam Gibson through ball found its way to Carlos Mendes Gomes down the left and into the hosts’ box, with the resulting cross-come-shot bouncing over the sprawling Sulphurites goalkeeper and into the net to give the Shrimps a 1-0 lead. John O’Sullivan was in close attendance and attempted to claim a David Nugent-esque on the line tap-in, but the opener was adjudged to have been an own-goal by Will Smith with just 28 seconds on the clock. The Lancastrians had a trio of chances to extend their early advantage around the 15 minute mark.

The PFA’s partnerships with the Premier League Charitable Fund, the English Football League Trust and the National League Trust have strengthened once again over the past 12 months. The overarching Code of Practice, to which all Club Community Foundations must adhere, has enabled them to implement a coordinated, structured and focussed approach to community player engagement and embed a sense of social responsibility within all of our players. The player engagement programme during the season has included Club Community Ambassadors in areas of Health, Education, Inclusion and Equalities, recognition of 111 PFA Community Champions at local club level from both the men’s and women’s game, and the continued development of player foundations. See page 7 for a full breakdown of player engagement activities across the season. The 2019/20 campaign is one we will never forget both on and off the pitch. As a result of Covid-19 we have seen the worst public health crisis for a generation, and here in the UK one of the highest casualty rates of the pandemic anywhere in the world.

  • Carlisle United to Secure Back-To-Back 3-1 Victories, and Third Successive Home Win at the Fortress Camp Mazu
Threesy Does It for Morecambe The Shrimps put three past Carlisle United to secure back-to-back 3-1 victories, and third successive home win at the fortress Camp Mazu. After a stunning second half display last time out against Crawley Town, Shrimps manger Derek Adams surprisingly made another 5 changes to his starting line-up for the game against ‘local’ rivals Carlisle United. Mellor, Gibson, Letheren and Diagouraga replaced Cooney, Hendrie, Halstead and Slew, whilst O’Sullivan was brought back in place of injured Blackburn loanee Brad Lyons. A low-key start from both sides quickly descended into a game of long-ball, which seemed to suit a robust Morecambe back-line more than the visiting Cumbrian outfit. Having enjoyed marginally more possession, Carlisle displayed a lack of quality in the final third, and were unable to create noteworthy opportunities from open play. This was a theme that would continue throughout the afternoon, not helped by the early departure of United frontman Josh Kayode – who was seemingly unable to shake off a knock that he sustained in a challenge from Shrimps skipper Sam Lavelle. The same thing could not be said for Morecambe, who were competent without the ball and ruthlessly efficient with it. On 30 minutes Carlos Mendes Gomes exposed a chronic lack of pace in the middle of the Carlisle defence with a perfectly weighted through-ball that dissected the visitor centre-backs into the path of the onrushing John O’Sullivan. The resulting shot was superbly saved by Paul Farman, who managed to get to tip to the ball onto the cross-bar and behind for a Shrimps corner.

  • Macclesfield Town Football Club Return to the Non-League Scene Chapter Five So Near and Yet So
MACCLESFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB RETURN TO THE NON-LEAGUE SCENE CHAPTER FIVE Season 2016-2017 SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR BY GEOFFREY KNIGHTS OVERVIEW A relatively successful season reaching the second round of the Emirates FA Cup, runners-up in the Buildbase FA Trophy and ninth in the Vanarama National League, one place higher than the 2015-16 season. Third position had been attained in the league in October but this status could not be maintained with ninth position consolidated throughout the last three months of the season. Additional funds helped the club throughout the season from cup receipts including one live televised match, sale of three players together with monies raised from the 2016-17 Campaign Fund. Attendances for home league matches fell to an average of 1456 per match compared to 1598 for the 2015-16 season, within this figure there was a reduction in both the number of home and away supporters. However, the town well and truly backed the club when over 7500 supporters attended the Buildbase Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium. The overall financial position of the club continued to improve with additional funding provided by the Silkmen Supporters’ Trust and through the Super Silk Lotto, with the owner stating that he anticipated a more or less breakeven position to be achieved for the financial year. OFF-FIELD Club Officials There were four major appointments during the past year Rob Heys - appointed General Manager bringing with him 15 years of experience at Accrington Stanley in a similar role. Carole Griffiths – appointed as Office Administrator.
