  • Harrogate Town with a Solid Away Performance
Harro-great For Shrimps 10 man Morecambe back to winning ways, as they take an early lead to see off Harrogate Town with a solid away performance. Fresh from a rare week off in-between fixtures, a relatively well rested Shrimps side headed east to face in-form Yorkshire outfit Harrogate Town for an all-roses clash. With skipper Sam Lavelle suspended following an unsuccessful appeal against his red card last time out, Morecambe were glad to be able to call upon the services of fit again Nathaniel Knight- Percival. A surprise recall for Alex Kenyon in place of the influential Yann Songo’o, re- suspended for a further four games following the outcome of an elongated FA hearing, completed the enforced changes to the Shrimps starting line-up for the clubs first ever trip to Wetherby Road. Stand-in Morecambe Captain Aaron Wildig elected to kick down the slope in the first half, and that looked to be an inspired decision when the Shrimps caught the hosts cold. A Liam Gibson through ball found its way to Carlos Mendes Gomes down the left and into the hosts’ box, with the resulting cross-come-shot bouncing over the sprawling Sulphurites goalkeeper and into the net to give the Shrimps a 1-0 lead. John O’Sullivan was in close attendance and attempted to claim a David Nugent-esque on the line tap-in, but the opener was adjudged to have been an own-goal by Will Smith with just 28 seconds on the clock. The Lancastrians had a trio of chances to extend their early advantage around the 15 minute mark.

  • Carlisle United to Secure Back-To-Back 3-1 Victories, and Third Successive Home Win at the Fortress Camp Mazu
Threesy Does It for Morecambe The Shrimps put three past Carlisle United to secure back-to-back 3-1 victories, and third successive home win at the fortress Camp Mazu. After a stunning second half display last time out against Crawley Town, Shrimps manger Derek Adams surprisingly made another 5 changes to his starting line-up for the game against ‘local’ rivals Carlisle United. Mellor, Gibson, Letheren and Diagouraga replaced Cooney, Hendrie, Halstead and Slew, whilst O’Sullivan was brought back in place of injured Blackburn loanee Brad Lyons. A low-key start from both sides quickly descended into a game of long-ball, which seemed to suit a robust Morecambe back-line more than the visiting Cumbrian outfit. Having enjoyed marginally more possession, Carlisle displayed a lack of quality in the final third, and were unable to create noteworthy opportunities from open play. This was a theme that would continue throughout the afternoon, not helped by the early departure of United frontman Josh Kayode – who was seemingly unable to shake off a knock that he sustained in a challenge from Shrimps skipper Sam Lavelle. The same thing could not be said for Morecambe, who were competent without the ball and ruthlessly efficient with it. On 30 minutes Carlos Mendes Gomes exposed a chronic lack of pace in the middle of the Carlisle defence with a perfectly weighted through-ball that dissected the visitor centre-backs into the path of the onrushing John O’Sullivan. The resulting shot was superbly saved by Paul Farman, who managed to get to tip to the ball onto the cross-bar and behind for a Shrimps corner.

  • Cheltenham Town in a 1-0 Home Win That Sees the Shrimps Looking Upwards at the Automatic Promotion Places
Robins Rocked Morecambe beat league leaders Cheltenham Town in a 1-0 home win that sees the Shrimps looking upwards at the automatic promotion places. Sam Lavelle returned to the starting line-up for Morecambe in place of Nathaniel Knight- Percival, with the Shrimps centre-backs trading one game suspensions following back-to-back dismissals. Another enforced personnel switch saw a surprise start for Liam McAlinden, who replaced the injured Alex Kenyon. The latter change resulted in a tactical deviation from Morecambe manager Derek Adams, with the Shrimps opting for two frontmen and a fancy four-man midfield diamond in this fixture – not too dissimilar to how Morecambe finished the game in the win at Whaddon Road earlier in the season. Before Aaron Wildig got the game underway, both sets of players and officials observed a minutes silence in memory of Shrimps stalwart Dickie Danson, who passed away during the week. Dickie had fulfilled various roles at Morecambe FC since becoming second team manager in 1991, and was heavily influential in the clubs youth development programmes. In the opening stages the sides largely cancelled each other out, with both teams not allowing their opponents any time or space on the ball. Cheltenham appeared to be the more patient side, but lacking potency with their passing in the final third. McAlinden was given a sighter for Morecambe, shooting wide but adjudged to have been offside after a slide rule pass from Carlos Mendes Gomes. With 20 minutes on the clock a Liam Gibson nod forwards saw a tussle for possession between Cole Stockton and the Cheltenham defence.
