We knew only that they were different, to be feared, and in that fear was included the hostility of the powerless against the powerful, the poor against the rich, the worker against the employer; and the poorly dressed against the well dressed. This is Stamps, a small town in Arkansas, in the United States, in the 1930s. The population is almost evenly divided between black and white and totally divided by where and how they live. As Maya Angelou says, there is very little contact between the two races. Their houses are in different parts of town and they go to different schools, colleges, stores, and places of entertainment. When they travel, they sit in separate parts of buses and trains. After the American Civil War (1861—65), slavery was ended in the defeated Southern states, and many changes were made by the national government to give black people more rights.

Skain's Domain - Episode 2 Skain's Domain Episode 2 – March 30, 2020 0:00:00 Moderator: Wynton, are you ready? 0:00:01 Wynton Marsalis: I'm ready. 0:00:02 Moderator: Okay. With that, I'll turn it over to you. 0:00:05 WM: Alright, I wanna welcome y'all to our second Skain's Domain where we discuss issues, significant and trivial, with the same type of feeling. We're gonna talk tonight of something called "Jazz Stories". I grew up... My father's a jazz musician and I would always notice, the mysterious thing about them was how they would listen to recordings and know who was playing by their sound. And they would start talking about, "Oh man, that must be Frog." "No man, that's not Frog, that's Jug." And everybody always had a hip nickname and they would start questioning who was who, and then when the disk jockey would come on and say, "That was Gene Ammons." "I knew that was Jug." But I also noticed that they used stories to teach you lessons. There were always stories about fantastic musicians, things that they did, occurrences. They taught you history, they taught you how to feel about life. 0:00:51 WM: And later when I was older, we would have fantastic hangs at the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival, Vienne Jazz Festival. All the musicians of all the generations would be together and we could sit up and listen to musicians tell stories. I'll never forget one night when I was 18, I was with Art Blakey on a tour of Europe, and all of the greatest drummers in the world were there playing some type of festival.

  • 25 Years and 5 Years His Junior
JOE TURNER’S COME AND GONE Synopsis Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, set in 1917, is the story of Harold Loomis who returns to a Pittsburgh in search of his wife. He is haunted by the memory of bounty hunter Joe Turner, the man who had illegally enslaved him. Loomis is unable to fully embrace or release the past. His search brings him to Seth and Bertha’s boarding house with his young daughter, Zonia, where “conjure man” Bynum shows him that he really is searching for himself. Characters BERTHA HOLLY: Seth's wife of 25 years and 5 years his junior. She knows her place in the hierarchy of the boardinghouse, yet still has some say in the decision making and will often voice her opinion. A very loving mother to the boardinghouse family. In the end, she tells Mattie that the only two things you need in your life are love and laughter; the things that she has had faith in and have helped her get by. HERALD LOOMIS: A resident of the boardinghouse. Having been enslaved by Joe Turner for seven years, Loomis has completely lost his way in life. An odd man that dons an overcoat and hat in mid- August, Loomis is 32 years old and a displaced slave searching for his wife. In the end he finds his song, an independent, self-sufficient song that he can sing proudly. MARTHA LOOMIS PENTECOST: Herald Loomis’s wife. She is about 28, very religious and a member of the Evangelical church. She left the South and her daughter behind.

National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Department of English Language and Literature MA Programme “Linguistics: Theory and Applications” Power, Powerlessness and Empowerment in African-American and White Performers' Hip-Hop Rhetoric: A Contrastive Corpus-driven Critical Discourse Analysis. Panagiotis Delis ID:217008 Supervisor Ourania Hatzidaki Date of Submission February 2019 Declaration This submission is my own work. Any quotation from, or description of, the work of others is acknowledged herein by reference to the sources, whether published or unpublished. ii Abstract The present corpus-driven critical discourse analysis study sets out to observe the rampant transformation of the hip hop genre diachronically, examining all song lyrics from the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop music chart archives from the 1960s to 2010s. It also examines the shifts in rhetoric within gender- (male and female) and race- oriented (black and white) groups. This study charts the rhetoric of US hip hop in order to reveal ideological patterns, similarities or differences between social actors, especially the artists themselves and those directly addressed or referred to by the artists (addressors and addressees, as are categorized here). The main objective of the research is to locate and examine the artists’ recurring linguistic choices, identify and critically account for the full range of significant characteristics of the two features (race and gender) under scrutiny within the genre of hip hop, and also their evolution in time. The analysis affords a deeper insight into the tremendous rhetorical changes of a set of culturally- and emotionally-loaded, mostly stigmatized terms, which are representative of archetypal asymmetric relations between social actors.
