SOPHOMORE KELSEY HOEFER Q&A with Head Coach Bruce Atkinson

You inherited a team that struggled last season due to eight players missing time due to injury. If healthy is this a team that can succeed quickly?

While injuries certainly played a role in last season’s poor performance, there were several other areas of weakness that played an equal role. It is our hope that improved ball control and increased aggressiveness will help us improve upon last season’s result.

You brought in a large recruiting class, what do they bring to the team and do you envision them making a difference right away?

I think that each one of the members of this year’s recruiting class offer something different to our You have fi ve seniors on the squad, what do you team. Our main goal was to add depth to the team look for from them in terms of leadership, etc.? in all positions and I feel that we have done that. I look for them to lead the team by example on and You’ve added an international fl air with the Luana off of the court. Rocha (Brazil native) and Jingyi Wang (China native) plus graduate assistant Leslie Da Silva As a coaching staff is it a big adjustment to go (Brazil) joining the team. How does having players from the Division II play to Division I? with international experience impact the team? Aside from a few minor rule variances, I haven’t really noticed a difference. Volleyball is volleyball International players add variety to a team. Offering and fundamentally sound teams will generally student-athletes from the United States the succeed. opportunity to learn about other cultures only adds to their overall college experience. International You have four defensive specialists on the roster, student-athletes are just like those from the U.S. Some are good and some aren’t. I think Luana and two of which saw some time as freshmen last Jingyi will make positive contributions to our team year and two transfers. Talk a little bit about over the course of their careers. what you expect out of those players and that position? Leslie was my assistant in Hawaii and she played a big part in the success we experienced last I expect them to offer us dramatically improved ball season. She has an excellent understanding of the control over last year’s team. We will most likely game of volleyball and will be a tremendous asset only utilize two defensive specialists on a regular in the recruitment of future international student- basis so these should be hotly contested positions athletes to our program. on this year’s team.

8 2010 TIGER VOLLEYBALL You have three setters on the roster. Talk a little bit about how you expect that position to play out?

This is the position that is our biggest unknown at this time. Luana Rocha also has considerable experience as a setter which makes this starting position that much more competitive. We want our setter to be the offensive leader of our team. I strongly feel that this will be the position that makes or breaks this year’s team.

At middle blocker, you bring back a handful of players who got experience last year led by starter Shelynne Hoyt. Talk about what the returners plus the new players bring to the game?

Our middle blockers will play a huge role in both the offensive and defensive systems that we will run. Shelynne and Susan Gansor have worked extremely hard throughout the off-season and I expect them to both make signifi cant contributions this year. Alysha McCreary and Jingyi Wang will add depth to this position and will challenge the returners for spots in this year’s starting line-up. SENIOR At outsider hitter, you return Britney Loomis BRITNEY LOOMIS and Amanda Halls who saw a fair amount of time last year. Plus you add in Kelsey Hoefer, who saw some time despite injuries and newcomer Katy Buck. What do you expect from those players at that position?

Amanda and Katy are currently the front runners for these two starting positions. Kelsey and Britney have the ability to challenge them for signifi cant playing time and will also both compete for the starting position on the right.

What are some of the goals for the team this year?

We want to show improvement both in the classroom and on the court. We want to become more competitive on the conference level and build upon what is needed to compete for a conference championship in the upcoming years. I look forward to starting up competitive play. The team is working hard and I feel we are going to be fun to watch.

In the decades following the American Revolution, Americans clamored for free public schooling for their children. Maryland’s elected offi cials and others who valued a literate citizenry also recognized that public school systems would require qualifi ed, dedicated teachers. They pressed for a systematic, reliable means of producing teachers, and in 1865 – the fi nal year of the Civil War – the legislature allocated funds for Maryland’s fi rst teacher-training school. On January 15, 1866, the State Normal School opened its rented quarters in Baltimore with a principal, M.A. Newell, 11 students and three faculty (“Normal School” is the English translation for Ecole Normale, the term used by the French teacher-training schools that served as models for U.S. educators). Today, Towson University is an institution of higher learning with a president, Dr. Robert Caret, an enrollment of 21,177 and a faculty numbering over 1,400.

44 2010 TIGER VOLLEYBALL THE CHESAPEAKE BAY- A NATIONAL TREASURE The largest estuary in North America, the Chesapeake Bay is truly a boaters’ para- dise and provides a way of life for thousands of Maryland watermen. The word Chesapeake means “great shellfi sh bay” and is derived from the language of Algon- quin Indians, who settled here long before the British. Home of the world-famous blue crab and Chesapeake Bay oysters, it has provided a source of livelihood for the people who have inhabited the region for centuries. The area contains a multitude of restaurants along the water that specialize in preparing steamed crabs and raw oysters in season. Marylanders, especially those who live on and frequent its shores, have developed an international reputation for crab cakes, the basic staple of the seafood cuisine featured on many Maryland menus. The culture of the people who have fi shed the bay’s waters and the design of their vessels over the years is unique to the bay and very much a part of its overall charm.
