Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Bureau of Planning and Resource Protection Resource Management Planning Program RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PLAN Mount Holyoke Range Planning Unit Including Mount Holyoke Range State Park, Joseph Allen Skinner State Park, Mount Tom State Reservation and Holyoke Heritage State Park July 2013 Mount Holyoke Range Planning Unit Including Mount Holyoke Range State Park, Joseph Allen Skinner State Park, Mount Tom State Reservation and Holyoke Heritage State Park RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PLAN 2013 Deval L. Patrick, Governor Richard K. Sullivan, Jr., Secretary John P. Murray, Commissioner Resource Management Plans provide guidance for managing properties under the stewardship of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). They are intended to be working documents for setting priorities, enabling the Department to adapt to changing fiscal, social and environmental conditions. The planning process provides a forum for communication and cooperation with park visitors and the surrounding communities to ensure transparency in the DCR’s stewardship efforts. As I travel the Commonwealth, I am reminded of the variety of high-quality experiences offered by DCR parks. Those within the Mount Holyoke Range Planning Unit are among the best that this state has to offer. They provide a variety of recreational opportunities, from challenging hikes along mountain ridgelines, to family picnics on a promontory overlooking the Connecticut River Valley, to taking in a summer concert in downtown Holyoke. Although they may all be visited in a single day, the true character of these parks is best revealed through repeat visits. In addition to providing outstanding recreational opportunities, these parks protect important natural and cultural resources.

Bird Observer VOLUME 35, NUMBER 1 FEBRUARY 2007 HOT BIRDS On October 30, 2006, an immature Painted Bunting (left) was banded at Manomet Center for Conservation Science in Plymouth. It was photographed by Ann Graham. On November 5, 2006, Jeremiah Trimble discovered and photographed a Gray Flycatcher (above) at Danehy Park in Cambridge. This bird was seen by several others during its brief stay. Linda Ferraresso discovered an American Avocet (left) at Pikul’s Farm in Rowley on November 12, 2006, and Eric Nielsen took this photograph on November 19. On November 12, 2006, Blair Nikula discovered and photographed this stunning Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (right) in North Truro. Look for more HOT BIRDS on the inside back cover! There has been much discussion at Bird Observer over the past year about the need to include more consistent coverage of these areas. An important step in that direction was taken last April with the addition of Trudy Tynan of South Hadley to our editorial staff.

  • Hampshire Bird Club, Inc. Amherst, Massachusetts February 2019
Hampshire Bird Club, Inc. Amherst, Massachusetts www.hampshirebirdclub.org Volume 35, No. 6 February 2019 With the release of the latest batch of field trips (Feb. through May) there just isn’t space for my usual editorial. It will return next month, however. In the meantime, enjoy exploring the list of upcoming programs and trips, and start planning your local birding adventures for the soon-to-be-arriving spring season. NEXT PROGRAM Monday, February 11 at 7:15 p.m. Bruce Beehler presents North on the Wing: Travels with the Songbird Migration of Spring Immanuel Lutheran Church, 867 North Pleasant Street, Amherst In late March 2015, ornithologist Bruce M. Beehler set off on a solo four-month trek to track songbird migration and the northward progress of spring through America. Traveling via car, canoe, and bike and on foot, Beehler followed woodland warblers and other Neotropical songbird species from the southern border of Texas, where the birds first arrive after their winter sojourns in South America and the Caribbean, northward through the Mississippi drainage to its headwaters in Minnesota and onward to their nesting grounds in the north woods of Ontario. In North on the Wing, Beehler describes both the epic migration of songbirds across the country and the gradual dawning of springtime through the U.S. heartland–the blossoming of wildflowers, the chorusing of frogs, the leafing out of forest canopies–and also tells the stories of the people and institutions dedicated to studying and conserving the critical habitats and processes of spring songbird migration. Inspired in part by Edwin Way Teale’s landmark 1951 book North with the Spring, this book–part travelogue, part field journal, and part environmental and cultural history–is a fascinating first-hand account of a once-in-a-lifetime journey.
